After graduating from high school in the late 1960s, she studied at York University and the Royal Conservatory of Music. Before deciding to become a full-time writer in the early 1980s, Gowdy pursued several other career paths including musical theatre, the securities industry, and being an editor for the publisher Lester and Orpen Dennys. Since devoting herself to her writing, she has, from time to time, taught creative writing at Ryerson and the University of Toronto and has worked as an interviewer for the TVOntario program, Imprint. Though she has earned an international reputation for her uncanny ability to characters who are abnormal to the extreme while at the same time presenting them in a sympathetic and moving manner, her first novel was actually quite conventional. Published in 1988, Through the Green Valley is a historical novel that follows the struggle of an Irish peasant family who eventually move to America to escape the war and famine in their own country. It was not until the publication of

Gowdy's novel Falling Angels ) was made into a film by director Scott Smith, from an adaptation written by Esta Spalding, in . The novel focuses on a nuclear family in a Ontario suburb. The main characters are three sisters who come of age in a house run by their abusive and womanizing father and must constantly find ways to take care of their depressed and alcoholic mother. Gowdy says her inspiration for the book was the idea of a Canadian family living during the Cold War and practicing using their bomb shelter in the back yard. In the novel and movie, the family spend two weeks trapped in the bomb shelter as an "exercise" rather than going on a family trip to Disneyland Authors such as Alice Munro and Carol Shields look at the everyday, but the bulk of Gowdy's work reflects upon the opposite. Gowdy's stories look at the extreme - the strange and the abnormal - and she is able to make her characters relatable and poignant. She often uses

    BIO
Barbara Gowdy's work, THE WHITE BONE, is being praised for its "audacious concept, inspired characterization and poignant message." It is the story of Mud, a young African elephant cow, whose courage and visionary powers guide her and her kin to a safe place away from the ivory poachers. Gowdy witnessed the real-life quest for survival on which this story is based, traveling to Kenya to study elephant behavior. Once again Gowdy draws readers into a strange fictional world, animating it with her convincing narrative and poetic vision of life. Her previous book, MISTER SANDMAN, was Margaret Atwood's Book of the Year choice for the Times Literary Supplement, and it was also a Village Voice choice for Favorite Book of the Year. The film Kissed was inspired by a short story from her collection WE SO SELDOM LOOK ON LOVE. INTERVIEW June 23, 2000

Review of The White Bone by Linda Tiessen Wiebe.

Response to Barbara Gowdy's The White Bone by Linda Tiessen Wiebe. In the bathtub, as I washed soap from my face, I suddenly imagined throwing back my trunk and spraying water on my grey wrinkled back. I had spent the morning finishing Barbara Gowdy's book The White Bone ; it wasn't hard imagining myself an elephant.
And I think Gowdy would be pleased. In the tradition of Watership Down , she takes you to the alien plains of Africa through the eyes of elephants. To enter the elephants' world was a privilege. I've been fascinated by elephants for a while; they're so big and lumbering, homely yet majestic. Their sad eyes draw me. In The White Bone , they and their world came alive and I fell in love with them. God is referred to as The She, themselves as she-ones. Matriarchal and communal, the elephants live a rhythmed life between the rainy and dry seasons. They form a society together with other elephant families and other creatures. They have their own language (we are ignomiously referred to as hindleggers). Their keen intellect shows in their visionary ability; most herds have at least one "mind talker". They sing constantly, hymns praising the rains or bolstering courage.
The life of one particular family, the She-S's, is revealed through the eyes of Mud and two of her friends. Mud, a twelve-year-old female who has just mated for the first time, is being honored for this event by receiving her adult name from her adoptive family. But she isn't quite ready to leave her adolescence and refuses to acknowledge her new name. Mud and her best friend Date Bed devise plots to outwit the intolerable old cows by starting their own herd. Date Bed is the true offspring of Mud's adoptive mother; they have been inseparable since childhood. Date Bed is a gatherer of knowledge, curious and always observing. Tall Time is an older male, who periodically visits the family because he has had a crush on Mud since she was two. He can't help his unnatural devotion and desire for Mud. He wants to mate for life with her because he feels she carries the image of the Divine She. He is called the Link Bull because he knows all the omens and hidden meanings to coincidences.
