KATHERINE GOVIER is a resident of Toronto, Ontario, where she lives with her husband and two children. However, this Edmonton, Alberta native has also lived in Calgary, Washington D.C. and London, England. While living in England, Katherine taught English at Leeds University. She has also been an English instructor at Ryerson Polytechnic Institute, and visiting lecturer in creative writing at York University in Toronto. Perhaps it is because of Katherine's travels that a strongly recognizable setting is very important in the books she has written. These include three collections of short stories: Fables of Brunswick Avenue Before and After (1989) and The Immaculate Conception Photography Gallery (1994), and five novels: Random Descent Going Through the Motions Between Men Hearts of Flame (1991) and Angel Walk (1996), and edited a travel anthology Without a Guide In addition to her writing, Katherine is active in Canada's writing community. She has served as Chair of the Writers' Trust of Canada (then The Writers' Development Trust), as well as a writer with, and a co-ordinator of, the Writers In Electronic Residence program (see also What isWIER from WIER's homepage.

While these things might amount to unpleasant contradictions in another, Govier makes it all work very well. In her work and in her mien, Govier is a writer without compare. Comparisons are made anyway. In articles about Govier, Margaret Atwood's name comes up a lot, though the comparisons seem unjust. Both women are Canadians and both have decided to strike where no genre exists to tell stories that are close to their hearts.
