Dear reader, lucky for me (not so for you), I will *not* have to dig through and comprehensively post the recent bibliographies. Thank goodness. Steven Soderbergh
Biography - Steven Soderbergh
Steven Soderbergh is the great challenger to the idea of ‘auteur’ directors – helmers who command a clear, distinct aesthetic throughout their careers. By contrast, Soderbergh is a jack of all trades, frequently crossing genres, production styles, and budgetary constraints while alternating between mega-wattage blockbusters and tiny arthouse flicks. Regardless, he’s a brilliant director, substituting the consistency of contemporaries like Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese for a deft ability to, for lack of a better phrase, mess around. Born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 14, 1963, Soderbergh grew up mainly in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where his father held a post at Louisiana State. It was there that he discovered filmmaking at an early age, borrowing equipment from LSU and making Super 8mm films as a teen. He skipped college and moved straight to Hollywood, working various showbiz odd-jobs including duties as a cue card holder and eventually as a freelance editor. His early work includes the Grammy-nominated concert short, “Yes: 9012 Live” and the black and white short “Winston”, which he used to attract investors to his first full-length feature. Soderbergh wrote “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” in eight days while home in Baton Rouge, which turned into his first feature and was easily the most impressive cinematic debut since Peter Bogdanovich’s “The Last Picture Show”. A sordid tale of sex, voyeurism, and angst, “Sex, Lies…” won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, making Soderbergh (then 26) the youngest winner in history. The film’s star

IF THE COURSE OF EVOLUTION were commanded by a superior intelligence or according to some species-centered notion of progress, humans might reasonably expect to be surrounded by the likes of Stephen Jay Gould. Before his regrettable death in 2002, Gould was a prolific and award-winning author, a distinguished member of the National Academy of Sciences, and Harvard professor of zoology and geology for more than thirty years. But informed laypersons know better than to take such brilliance for granted, thanks in large measure to Gould himself. A collection of Gould's work published earlier this year, The Richness of Life: The Essential Stephen Jay Gould (Steven Rose, ed.), offers a fresh opportunity to celebrate Gould's contributions to evolutionary science.

Darwinian Fundamentalism
By Stephen Jay Gould
The Origin of Species In this light, especially given history's tendency to recycle great issues, I am amused by an irony that has recently ensnared evolutionary theory. A movement of strict constructionism, a self-styled form of Darwinian fundamentalism, has risen to some prominence in a variety of fields, from the English biological heartland of John Maynard Smith to the uncompromising ideology (albeit in graceful prose) of his compatriot Richard Dawkins, to the equally narrow and more ponderous writing of the American philosopher Daniel Dennett (who entitled his latest book Darwin's Dangerous Idea Moreover, a larger group of strict constructionists are now engaged in an almost mordantly self-conscious effort to "revolutionize" the study of human behavior along a Darwinian straight and narrow under the name of "evolutionary psychology." Some of these ideas have filtered into the general press, but the uniting theme of Darwinian fundamentalism has not been adequately stressed or identified. Professionals, on the other hand, are well aware of the connections. My colleague Niles Eldredge, for example, speaks of this coordinated movement as Ultra-Darwinism in his recent book, Reinventing Darwin Amid the variety of their subject matter, the ultra-Darwinists share a conviction that natural selection regulates everything of any importance in evolution, and that adaptation emerges as a universal result and ultimate test of selection's ubiquity.

THE EVOLUTION OF LIFE ON EARTH
A SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN article.
October, 1994.
The history of life is not necessarily progressive; it is certainly not predictable. The earth's creatures have evolved through a series of contingent and fortuitous events.
STEPHEN JAY GOULD teaches biology, geology and the history of science at Harvard University, where he has been on the faculty since 1967. He received an A.B. from Antioch College and a PhD. in paleontology from Columbia University. Well known for his popular scientific writings, in particular his monthly column in Natural History magazine, he is the author of 13 books. Some creators announce their inventions with grand éclat. God proclaimed, "Fiat lux," and then flooded his new universe with brightness. Others bring forth great discoveries in a modest guise, as did Charles Darwin in defining his new mechanism of evolutionary causality in 1859: "I have called this principle, by which each slight variation, if useful, is preserved, by the term Natural Selection." Natural selection is an immensely powerful yet beautifully simple theory that has held up remarkably well, under intense and unrelenting scrutiny and testing, for 135 years. In essence, natural selection locates the mechanism of evolutionary change in a "struggle" among organisms for reproductive success, leading to improved fit of populations to changing environments. ( Struggle is often a metaphorical description and need not be viewed as overt combat, guns blazing. Tactics for reproductive success include a variety of non-martial activities such as earlier and more frequent mating or better cooperation with partners in raising offspring.) Natural selection is therefore a principle of local adaptation, not of general advance or progress.

The Ultimate RAB book list - part 2, G-
This represents a summary of all books recommended, mostly in rec.arts.books, that I've saved the recommendation for. The list spans three years, and includes other book lists. The listings span the range from banned (or attempts made) books to those recommended for children, current bedside reading to books that changed someone's life. The only consistent feature of the books on this list is that someone posted on the net that they recommended it for some purpose. Almost all of the books present are ones I haven't read (which is probably what prompted me to save the note!) and some are books I've read and didn't like much. But, since others do, they're here. The list is somewhere over 1250 books long. You should be able to find something interesting here. Authors A-F
