Stephen Jay Gould
by Doug Linder (2004)
Five-year-old Stephen Jay Gould visited the American Museum of Natural History in New York with his father, a court stenographer, in 1946. Gould gazed in amazement at the sight of his first dinosaur, a twenty-foot-high tyrannosaurus. Punctuated equilibrium holds that evolution occurred primarily in relatively rapid periods of speciation rather than taking place in slow, gradual transformations through the process of natural selection. According to Gould, most species remain largely stable over long periods of time before some cataclysmic event sets rapid change in motion. For example, Gould argued, 65 million years ago, following the impact of the meteor near the Yucatan Peninsula and the resultant death of dinosaurs, the burrowing mammals that survived rapidly evolved and filled vacated ecological niches. is Gould made three general arguments for evolution. First, he pointed to the undeniable evidence of evolution within species, such as the breeding that produced dogs as diverse as the toy poodle and the Saint Bernard or the evolving of anti-biotic resistant strains of bacteria. Finally, Gould found compelling evidence for evolution in the fossil record of transitional species.

Stephen Jay Gould: An Appreciation
Clive Bradley
[from New Politics , vol. 9, no. 4 (new series),
whole no. 36, Winter 2004]
CLIVE BRADLEY is a regular contributor to Workers' Liberty (UK). He has written extensively on the politics of militant Islam. STEPHEN JAY GOULD, THE PALAEONTOLOGIST AND SCIENCE WRITER who died last year, wrote brilliantly on a bewildering series of subjects, but he is perhaps best known for his contribution to four: general evolutionary theory; the sociobiology debate; the relationship between science and religion; and the study (or critique of it) of intelligence testing. This article will attempt mainly to introduce these debates to readers unfamiliar with them, and to summarize what Gould had to say. It is written by someone with no academic background in the natural sciences, but who came to admire Gould enormously as, at least implicitly, though often more than that, a socialist, even (broadly) Marxist scientist. Perhaps, indeed, this is an underlying and more general issue that Gould addressed and illuminated: whether the notion of a "socialist scientist" is not properly speaking false, or oxymoronic. Science, surely, is science; and attempts to box it into socialist or Marxist frameworks sound more like the appalling practices of the Soviet Union than much else. Gould, and in this is he was by no means alone, argued however for understanding science, like everything else, in its social and historical context. The child of Jewish members of the Communist Party, Gould was politically engaged, beginning in the 1960s with involvement in Science for the People. His colleague, geneticist Richard Lewontin, is probably more overtly political, and writes with a harder ideological edge. But Gould was more well known (and a better writer); and so, for instance, one popular account of recent debates in science lumps one whole "camp" together as "Gouldians" (against the "Dawkinsians").

Paul McGarr
'P erhaps the most important advance in evolutionary theory since Darwin wrote The Origin of Species in 1859'. That assessment was given by the eminent, and left wing, biologist Steven Rose speaking at the Marxism 2003 event in London. The work he was referring to was Stephen Jay Gould's The Structure of Evolutionary Theory , a massive volume of some 1,400 pages published in 2002. Gould knew that he was dying as he worked on the book, and died of cancer last year at the age of 60. His legacy is immense. He is best known as a brilliant populariser of science, mainly through his collections of essays. These stemmed from a column in the US magazine Natural History . He started the series in 1974 and for more than 25 years kept up an unbroken monthly sequence, totalling over 300 essays in all. In them he ranged over issues in evolution, natural history and often way beyond. Sometimes he countered opponents like creationists, sometimes he explained important scientific ideas and debates. Always the essays were beautifully written and accessible while never oversimplifying the science. Gould drew heavily on history, art, architecture and much else, including baseball which he had a passion for, all of which he wove into his arguments to brilliant effect. Not many people can pull off explaining one of the most important theoretical arguments in evolution by treating readers to a long discussion about the statistics of home runs in US baseball seasons!

Recently, I found out that some choice Stephen Jay Gould essays from The New York Review of Books are free online at the magazine's website (hat tip to 2xSlick on the agony booth forum ). One is the first Gould essay I ever read, "Dinomania" (1993, also in the then-new collection Dinosaur in a Haystack ), where he deals with the Jurassic Park phenomenon, and in particular takes the movie version to task dumbing down some of the themes of the book. Another is "The Streak of Streaks" (1988, also in the collection Bully for Brontosaurus ) about Joe DiMaggio's hitting record, with Gould's memorable account of his personal encounter with his sports hero when his father caught a ball from DiMaggio.
So, to complement the many bloggers who are posting anecdotes and memories of Sagan for the Sagan blog-a-thon , I'll describe my own memories of meeting with Sagan's friend and fellow science writer Gould, who also died far too young (Sagan would be 72 today, Gould 65).
The time was fall 2000, when I was entering my first semester at NYU and Gould's essay column was still running every month in

When I find myself in times of trouble, Stephen Jay Gould comes to me
Another great walk this morning with my pal Zeke, who is taking all this far better than I am. As people often do when confronted with bad news, I turned my mind to scripture as we walked, to see if there was some solace or, barring that, wisdom to be found. And it can work if you pick the right scripture. The one I picked this morning was paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould's essay The Median Isn't the Message. Faced in 1982 with a diagnosis of mesothelioma, a cancer associated with exposure to asbestos, Gould went to the medical library to read up on his condition. He read that his cancer was incurable, with a median mortality of eight months after diagnosis. After a bit of thought, Gould was elated at the good news in those statistics. Degenerative myelopathy, the incurable neuromuscular disease that has been suggested as a likely cause of the growing weakness in Zeke's hindquarters, is a devastating and incurable illness that is, apparently, uniformly terminal. And incurable. Did I mention incurable?

Gene Expression Front Page December 25, 2003 Why Stephen J Gould was wrong From that Yglesias discussion I linked a while back, here's a debunking of the two central claims of the Mismeasure of Man. You may also be interested in this response by Arthur Jensen. However, I feel that the evidence from brain scans is more knock-your-socks-off persuasive.
Here's the comment from Yglesias that occassioned the retort: Yawn. Hasn't the fallacy of IQ been settled for years? Has anyone here read The Mismeasure of Man? Razib-While Gould has his shortcomings(he's said some pretty embarassing things about E.O. Wilson and Richard Dawkins)I think he does an effective job of demolishing the concept of g or of intelligence as a single number that is innate and immutable. He also takes on Jensen whom you have referred to bolster your argument. I'd recommend the book to everyone, but be warned there is a chapter on factor analysis that is torture.
The Mismeasure of Man didn't disprove the validity of IQ or factor analysis. It is a nontechnical work of propaganda aimed at the lay public. To clarify some points:
  • Factor analysis is just an application of abstract vector space theory , and if it was bunk, then there wouldn't be dozens of applications of it in fields ranging from chemistry to electrical engineering Factor analysis is a mathematical tool for examining a wide range of data sets, with applications especially important to the design of experiments (DOE), spectroscopy, chromatography, and chemometrics. Whereas the first two editions concentrated on standardizing the fundamentals of this emerging discipline, the Third Edition of Factor Analysis in Chemistry, the "bible" of factor analysis, proves a comprehensive handbook at a level that is consistent with the research and design of experiments today

by Stephen Jay Gould The history of life is not necessarily progressive; it is certainly not predictable. The earth's creatures have evolved through a series of contingent and fortuitous events. STEPHEN JAY GOULD teaches biology, geology and the history of science at Harvard University, where he has been on the faculty since 1967. He received an A.B. from Antioch College and a PhD. in paleontology from Columbia University. Well known for his popular scientific writings, in particular his monthly column in Natural History magazine, he is the author of 13 books. Some creators announce their inventions with grand éclat. God proclaimed, "Fiat lux," and then flooded his new universe with brightness. Others bring forth great discoveries in a modest guise, as did Charles Darwin in defining his new mechanism of evolutionary causality in 1859: "I have called this principle, by which each slight variation, if useful, is preserved, by the term Natural Selection." Natural selection is an immensely powerful yet beautifully simple theory that has held up remarkably well, under intense and unrelenting scrutiny and testing, for 135 years. In essence, natural selection locates the mechanism of evolutionary change in a "struggle" among organisms for reproductive success, leading to improved fit of populations to changing environments. ( Struggle is often a metaphorical description and need not be viewed as overt combat, guns blazing. Tactics for reproductive success include a variety of non-martial activities such as earlier and more frequent mating or better cooperation with partners in raising offspring.) Natural selection is therefore a principle of local adaptation, not of general advance or progress.

Kirtley Mather, who died last year at age 89, was a pillar of both science and the Christian religion in America and one of my dearest friends. The difference of half a century in our ages evaporated before our common interests. The most curious thing we shared was a battle we each fought at the same age. For Kirtley had gone to Tennessee with Clarence Darrow to testify for evolution at the Scopes trial of 1925. When I think that we are enmeshed again in the same struggle for one of the best documented, most compelling and exciting concepts in all of science, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Creationism Is Not Science The basic attack of the creationists falls apart on two general counts before we even reach the supposed factual details of their complaints against evolution. First, they play upon a vernacular misunderstanding of the word "theory" to convey the false impression that we evolutionists are covering up the rotten core of our edifice. Second, they misuse a popular philosophy of science to argue that they are behaving scientifically in attacking evolution. Yet the same philosophy demonstrates that their own belief is not science, and that "scientific creationism" is therefore meaningless and self-contradictory, a superb example of what Orwell called "newspeak."

“Orchids manufacture their intricate devices from the common components of ordinary flowers, parts usually fitted for very different functions. If God had designed a beautiful machine to reflect his wisdom and power, surely he would not have used a collection of parts generally fashioned for other purposes. Orchids were not made by an ideal engineer; they are jury-rigged from a limited set of available components. Thus, they must have evolved from ordinary flowers.” Multimedia , including links to freely available content as well as content that may be purchased.

Stephen Gould was born on September 10, 1941 in New York City. He received an A.B. in 1963 from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. He then went to Graduate School in Evolutionary Biology and Paleontology at Columbia University . On October 3, 1965, he married Deborah Lee. In 1966, he became a Professor of Geology at Antioch College. The next year, he finished his doctoral work, earning a degree from Columbia. He also took an Assistant Professorship position at Harvard University . In 1971, he became an Associate Professor and in 1973, a Professor of Geology. Gould was one of the founders of the Punctuated Equilibrium School of Evolution. His most famous argument for punctuated equilibrium is the panda's "thumb." This is a modification of the wrist bone that allows the panda to strip leaves from bamboo shoots which Gould argued must have occurred all at once or it would not have been preserved by natural selection. He is best known for his regular column, "This View of Life," (since 1974) in Natural History magazine.
