Books: The magic of Elizabeth Goudge's stories is hard to describe. In her children's books, such as The Little White Horse , it resembles the exuberant imagination of an eight-year-old girl. When at the age of ten or twelve I first read Linnets and Valerians , I was delighted and enthralled to discover that here was someone who dreamed the kind of dreams I did and wrote the kind of fairy tales I wove in my make-believe games. Here were magic gates and spells, long-lost relatives and dazzling coincidences, in the kind of profusion adult writers don't usually allow themselves, and described in such detail that it all came vividly alive. In her books for adults the mood is not quite so light-hearted, nor the problems so straightforwardly solved; but the magic is much the same. The story draws you in even as it unrolls like a tapestry: intricately woven, brightly colored, and coming out square; not to mention keeping out the chilly drafts of mundane life. Goudge's characters are so splendidly drawn, her scenes so vividly depicted, and her prose so lyrical that in her books everything takes on a certain glow. And I do mean lyrical. About how the women characters are- their relationships with the men in their lives. Abosolutely anything at all you can tell me would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 I don't know how old your query is but I'm always glad to talk abut EG's work SCENT OF WATER is one of my favorites; PILGRIM'S INN is the second in a trilogy about the Eliot family. GREEN DOLPHIN STREET is the only movie of EG's to be filmed and I saw it as a child in 1947 or so. You ask about the women characters and their relationships with men. I'm sorry that she has been categorized as a romance novelist because she is quite different than what we mean by that term today. She is always on the side of honor, of family, of decency, of her religious beliefs. Yes, her characters struggle sometimes with such issues as male/female relationships but she never allows them to become tawdry. She lifts up the human spirit always. She builds, does not tear down. Her matriarch in the Eliot trilogy, Lucilla Eliot, has had to be a strong upright woman to create a family under very difficult emotional conditions.

Elizabeth Goudge 1900 - 1984
Welcome to your Elizabeth Goudge web page . Enjoy your visit . I hope that you will return often to read the new articles and view new pictures. Elizabeth Goudge, was born in Wells, England on April 24, 1900. She was the first and only child Ida Collenette Goudge and Henry Leighton Goudge. Elizabeth Goudge wrote, "No child can have lived in lovelier homes than my first two homes, or in a more enchanted city than Wells at the beginning of the century." These first two homes in Wells were the Tower House and The Rib across the road wherethe Goudge family moved a bit later. Elizabeth Goudge set three of her works in Wells: City of Bells Sister of the Angels and Henrietta's House (published in the United States as, The Blue Hills ). She called the city Torminster in these books - but clearly Torminster is a fictionalized Wells. As a child Elizabeth's summers were spent with her maternal grandparents on Guernsey of the Channel Islands. Elizabeth's mother did not come because of poor health, but Elizabeth liked Guernsey and her autobiography, Joy in the Snow , speaks of the people, especially her Grandfather, with great affection.
