Gordimer was born into a privileged white middle-class family and began reading at an early age. By the age of 9 she was writing, and she published her first story in a magazine when she was 15. Her wide reading informed her about the world on the other side of apartheid Gordimer's first book was The Soft Voice of the Serpent (1952), a collection of short stories. In 1953 a novel

Nadine Gordimer: Selected Stories
Using this Guide List of other study guides Nadine Gordimer (born 1923) has made her career under difficult circumstances. Born an English-speaking Jew in South Africa, she resented and resisted the pressure to conform to the white supremacist attitudes embodied in the system of apartheid. She has been politically active most of her life, and has often written about the relationships among white radicals, liberals, and blacks in South Africa. Her most widely-read works are novels like The Conservationist (1974) and Burger's Daughter (1979); but many people believe her finest writing to be contained in her short stories. In 1991 she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Although she is one of the most distinguished of modern women writers, she has resisted being classed as a feminist. See what you think of her portraits of men and women in the following stories.
The Bridegroom "Caravan"=trailer. "Ou Piet, ek wag." "Hey, old Piet; I'm waiting," in Afrikaans, the language of the Dutch-descended whites. Note the tone with which the protagonist addresses Piet, whom we are told later is "a good cook."

More on Nadine Gordimer
From the Archives of The New York Times ANOTHER REVIEW OF 'HOUSE GUN':
  • A Fatal Triangle in the Long Shadow of Apartheid (January 16, 1998)
''Ms. Gordimer's latest novel, 'The House Gun,' suggests as her 1994 novel 'None to Accompany Me' did that she has yet to come to terms, artistically, with the dismantling of apartheid and her country's drastically altered social landscape. Her descriptions of the political scene in 'Accompany Me' felt oddly generic and contrived, and her efforts to grapple with post-apartheid realities in 'The House Gun' are often equally forced.'' NEWS AND ESSAYS:
  • Topics: The Word, Too, Falls Victim of Apartheid (August 31, 1968)
Gordimer considers the difficulties of writing under the apartheid system in South Africa. In addition to the outright censorship of many works, South African writers are also confined by the narrowness of their perspective in a rigidly segregated society.
  • Pack Up, Black Man (January 15, 1971)
Gordimer explains that the South African resettlement of blacks is not a benign policy meant to clear out slums or improve economic efficiency, as its defenders claim. Comparing resettlement to Jim Crow laws in the U.S., Gordimer examines the conditions of resettlement camps and the effects they have on South African society.

Friday, 25 May 2007 Nadine Gordimer was born in 1923, outside Johannesburg, to a British mother and a Jewish Lithuanian father. She began publishing short stories in 1951, and after 1960 took part in South Africa's anti-apartheid movement. Nelson Mandela read her 1979 novel Burger's Daughter in jail on Robben Island; she was one of the first people invited to visit him on his release. She has written 14 novels - including The Conservationist (1974), which won the Booker Prize - as well as plays, essays and short stories. In 1991 she won the Nobel Prize for literature. Her most recent novel is Get a Life, published by Bloomsbury, which this autumn will issue a new volume of stories, Beethoven was One-Sixteenth Black. She lives in Johannesburg, works as a UN goodwill ambassador, and is a judge of the Man Booker International Prize, awarded in June.

A novelist, short story writer, critic, essayist, and editor, Nadine Gordimer is one of South Africa's preeminent authors, winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991. Born in South Africa in 1923 she was raisedin a segregated town outside Johannesburg and has remained in South Africa throughout her career. Drawing on South African political conditions for her works' essential themes, Gordimer focuses principally on the complex human tensions that result from apartheid. Praised for her authentic portrayalsof black African culture, she is also recognized for using precise details to "evoke both the physical landscape of South Africa and the human predicaments of a racially polarized society." One of her most compelling achievements has been to give the world an understanding of the terrible cost and effect of racism in her country, going beyond what journalism and the media can relate. Her political activism grew over a span of years from secret meetings with ANC members, to becoming a member, and subsequently to her steadfast and courageous support of the group, which now heads the government. In1987 she helped found the Congress of South African Writers, ninety percent of whose members are black. Three of her books were banned in South Africa, including The Late Bourgeois World (1966) and Burger's Daughter A Guest of Honour (1970), perhaps her finest work, received the James Toit Black Memorial Prize, while

In their efforts to forge a life together and find a place that can accommodate their respective dreams, the two central characters enact both metaphorically and literally the opening lines of a poem that figures prominently in the novel: "Let us go to another country / Not yours or mine / And start again." The Pickup Within their complex relationship, it often seems unclear what exactly is the nature of the love between Julie and Abdu or, in fact, if that is the right term for what passes between them. Desire and responsibility continuously come into conflict with each other. Abdu can't help considering Julie's relationship with him "another of the adventures she prided herself on being far enough from her father's beautiful house always to be ready for" (p. 112). Yet he "felt something unwanted,...he felt responsibility

NOBEL LAUREATES PLUS IT SEEMS MATERIALISM HAS CONQUERED ALL Nadine Gordimer, 83, was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1991. The South African writer recently spoke to Michael Skafidas, former editor of Greek NPQ, at the PEN International meeting in New York. By Nadine Gordimer Michael Skafidas: Is change, seemingly driven only by crisis events, always bound to disappoint? Nadine Gordimer: Skafidas: You sound more pragmatic and less optimistic than in the past. You used to be more of an idealist. You said once in the early 1990s that even though communism failed, there were still some ideals society could keep from it, namely the desire to change the world and make it a better place. Is there any space left for ideals? Gordimer: It seems that materialism has conquered all. We are urged every day to buy and to see our own image in terms of what kind of car we drive. In the developing countries, this is particularly disastrous. In South Africa, it has led some of our most principal people who were heroes in liberation to make a fool of themselves. Once they are in big positions, they become corrupt because their wife has got to have a Mercedes! Skafidas: How does a self-declared atheist like you cope with the global resurgence of religion?
