Gogol, Nikolai [Gogol’, Nikolaj] (Ukrainian: Hohol, Mykola), b 1 April 1809 in Velyki Sorochyntsi, Myrhorod county Poltava gubernia, d 4 March 1852 in Moscow. (Portrait: Nikolai Gogol .) The most famous Russian writer of Ukrainian origin. Having graduated from the Nizhen gymnasium , he left for Saint Petersburg in 1828 armed with a manuscript and hope for a successful literary career. His aspirations were abruptly arrested by extremely negative criticism of his sentimentally Romantic narrative poem Hans Kuechelgarten , which he published at his own expense in 1829 and copies of which he subsequently bought out and destroyed. He tried to survive economically by working as a bureaucrat, a teacher at a boarding school for daughters of the nobility, and very briefly as a lecturer of history at Saint Petersburg University. In 1836 he left Russia and, except for two brief eight-month intervals (1838–9, 1841–2), he lived abroad, mostly in Rome, until 1849, when he returned via Palestine to Russia. While working as a minor civil servant, Gogol spent his free time composing short stories based on his observations and memories of life in Ukraine. The first two volumes of these stories, Vechera na khutore bliz Dikan’ki (Evenings on a Farm near Dykanka, 1831–2), brought him immediate fame. Hiding behind the authorial mask of Rudy Panko the beekeeper, Gogol managed to portray a world where fantasy and reality intermingle in the prism of the worldly-wise but unsophisticated narrator, and thus Ukraine becomes at once fanciful, humorous, nostalgic, and somewhat poignant in its quaintness.

Nikolai Gogol- The Overcoat
I've written about so many Russian authors lately I've been expecting to get a call from Smirnoff any day now looking to take out ad space.
Today's story is Nikolai Gogol's " The Cloak ," or as it is sometimes translated, "The Overcoat".
I know I've been complaining lately over the seriousness of Russian literature, but thankfully Gogol offers up something with a sense of humour. This is not to say that it is a frivolous piece, but at least there's a chance to smile amidst all the philosophy and social commentary.
I loved the narration in particular. While the story is presented almost as a serious critique on various facets of bureaucracy and of the working world in general, the tone is undeniably satirical. Imagine Frasier narrating the Office
At the center of the story is Akakiy Akakievitch, a solemn and earnest individual who lives to work. This is not to be confused with ambition, for he has none. He is mundane to the point of being comically so. However, through the use of office bullies, Gogol made sure I still had sympathy for the guy. It's okay to laugh behind his back, just not directly at him.
It is only when faced with the task of affording a new coat that Akakiy shows any spark at all. He scrimps and saves, and actually shows signs of being excited about the prospect of the coat. When he finally gets it, things look like they might finally be looking up. This is not to be, however, and the story takes a somewhat strange turn. Personally I see the ending as a bit of poetic justice. I think Gogol plays it safe by making the reader question the authenticity of the conclusion, but it works either way.

Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) Brief Biography
Short Biography
Nikolai Gogol is one of the most famous of all Russian authors. Born in 1809 in the Ukraine, Gogol would become known as the Father of Russian Realism. His real surname was actually Ianovsky, however his grandfather had changed it order to claim noble Cossack ancestry. From 1819-1821, Gogol attended the Poltava boarding school and from there went on to high school at Nyezhin (a little town outside Kiev) until 1828. He didn't exactly excel in his studies there, but he did develop a love of theater, which would have a major impact on his future career. After graduating, he moved to St. Petersburg where he published his first piece of writing: an epic poem called Hans Kuchelgarten. It was a disaster. The public hated it, and, in a strong reaction to the harsh criticism, Gogol burned all remaining unsold copies. During this time, Gogol went through many careers: he was a professor, a low-level government official (a type of person he would write many of his works about), an actorhe even sailed for America in hopes of finding fortune there, that is until he got seasick and homesick before even leaving the Baltic Sea and returned home. Then, in 1831, came the turning point of Gogol's life. He met the great poet Alexander Pushkin. The two became great friends until Pushkin's death. The poet had a major impact upon Gogol's work and gave him many of his ideas. That year, he published his 'Dikinka Tales', which were sketches about Ukrainian life. These were well accepted by the public and Gogol decided to become a full-time writer.
