Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 -1832)
In many ways, Goethe was an exceptional writer: He lived through and defined 3 literary periods ('Sturm und Drang', German Classicism and early Romanticism).
His early epistolary novel 'The Sorrows of Young Werther' ('Die Leiden des jungen Werther') led to instant fame. Goethe's repeated travels to Italy fired his interest in classical ideals and inspired his refined poetry, prose and drama.
This great poet was also an accomplished scientist , his observations on animal bones greatly influenced Charles Darwin and his treatise on colour and light ('Zur Farbenlehre') is still frequently read.
'Faust' is generally considered to be his masterpiece. The Faustian pact between the scholar and devil has entered the domain of the proverb.
is possibly his best known piece of poetry.

Basic characteristics of an individual organism: to divide, to unite, to merge into the universal, to abide in the particular, to transform itself, to define itself, and as living things tend to appear under a thousand conditions, to arise and vanish, to solidify and melt, to freeze and flow, to expand and contract. Since these effects occur together, any or all may occur at the same moment. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Source: Contributed by: gary gach . It is either a primal polarity that is able to unify, or it is a primal unity that is able to divide. The operation of nature consists of splitting the united or uniting the divided; this is the eternal movement of systole and diastole of the heartbeat, the inhalation and exhalation of the world in which we live, act, and exist."

Spiritually and bodily he was the most perfectly formed, symetrically proportioned, justly balanced, and completely cultivated man perhaps that ever lived, whose priceless value to the world lies in this, that in his philosophy and life there is found the union in one of what to smaller people appears entirely and absolutely antagonistic, of utmost scientific

"More Light !" - his last words
Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von
German writer and scientist. A master of poetry, drama, and the novel, he spent 50 years on his two-part dramatic poem Faust (published 1808 and 1832). He also conducted scientific research in various fields, notably botany, and held several governmental positions.
Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von (1749-1832), German poet, dramatist, novelist, and scientist. Goethe was born in Frankfurt am Main. His poetry expresses a modern view of humanity's relationship to nature, history, and society; his plays and novels reflect a profound understanding of human individuality. Early Friendships
From 1770 to 1771 Goethe lived in Strasbourg, where he studied law, music, art, anatomy, and chemistry. In Strasbourg Goethe formed two friendships important for his literary life. One was with Friederike Brion, the daughter of a pastor; Goethe later used her as the model for feminine characters in several of his works. The other friendship was with philosopher and critic Johann Gottfried von Herder, who taught Goethe to appreciate the value of German folk poetry and German Gothic architecture as sources of inspiration for German literature. subjectivity Goethe in Weimar and Italy
In 1775 Charles Augustus, heir apparent to the duchy of Saxe-Weimar, invited Goethe to live and work in Weimar, one of the intellectual and literary centers of Germany. Goethe wrote little during the first ten years at Weimar. He began the composition of some of his best-known works, including the prose drama Iphigenia in Tauris (1787) and the character dramas Egmont and Faust. In 1786 Goethe went to Rome. He studied the art, architecture, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome and those Renaissance works that had been most strongly influenced by the ancients. During this time Goethe completed the dramas Egmont (1788) and Torquato Tasso (1790). These works brought into German literature the discipline of ideas and form that initiated the so-called classical period.

He alone is great and happy who requires neither to command nor to obey in order to secure his being of some importance in the world. One can be very happy without demanding that others agree with them. Age does not make us childish, as some say; it finds us true children. Mathematicians are like Frenchmen: whatever you say to them they translate into their own language and forthwith it is something entirely different. Ignorant men raise questions that wise men answered a thousand years ago. Nothing is as terrible to see as ignorance in action. To be pleased with one's limits is a wretched state. Mysteries are not necessarily miracles. Before you can do something you must first be something. For a man to achieve all that is demanded of him he must regard himself as greater than he is. Character, in great and little things, means carrying through what you feel able to do. If a man writes a book, let him set down only what he knows. I have guesses enough of my own. If I say to the moment: 'Stay now! You are so beautiful'!

A sense sublime
Of something far more deeply interfused,
Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns,
And the round ocean and the living air,
And the blue sky, and in the mind of man.
William Wordsworth.
Ferns, Scotland. By its very nature, poetic imagery links human thoughts and emotions intimately with the external world. Often it attributes human emotions to natural objects - what Ruskin called the "pathetic fallacy". Typical is Samuel Johnson's description of pastoral poetry as the kind "in which, among other things, clouds weep." Sometimes the world is distorted into the shape of a human emotion. Often it is the world itself that shapes the emotion. Often - as in haiku - it is impossible to say which precedes which: the external world is clearly and vividly perceived, yet the concrete object is chosen to reflect the mood. Hence poetry has an implicit tendency towards pan-psychism - the feeling that soul pervades all matter. The full development of this feeling is pantheism.

Life and Works:

German poet, novelist, playwright, courtier, and natural philosopher, one of the greatest figures in Western literature. He gained early fame with The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774), but his most famous work was the poetic drama in two parts, Faust . The Romantic period in Germany (the late eighteenth and early nineteengh centuries) is known as the age of Goethe, and his stature derives not only from his literary achievements as a lyric poet, novelist, and dramatist but also from his often significant contributions as a scientist (geologist, botanist, anatomist, physicist, historian of science) and as a critic and theorist of literature and of art. Most of the available information about Goethes's earliest years comes from his autobiography, From my life: Poetry and Truth Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1749, as the first child of Katherine Elisabeth Textor, the daughter of the mayor of Frankfurt , and the lawyer Johann Caspar Goethe, a leisured private citizen who devoted his energies to writing memories of his Italian journey, patronizing local artists, and, above all, educating his two survivng children, the future poet and his sister Cornelia. Goethe had a comfortable childhood and he was greatly influenced by his mother, who encouraged his literary aspirations. After troubles at school, he received at home exceptionally wide education. At an early age Goethe studied several languages, as well as art and music.

In one of his autobiographies Linnaeus lists his own achievements. "No one has been a greater Botanicus or Zoologist. No one has written more books, more correctly, more methodically, from his own experience. No one has more completely changed a whole science and initiated a new epoch. No one has become more of a household name throughout the world...", plus another fourteen exploits. However Linnaeus was not the only one to speak well of Linnaeus. The philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau, who seldom had anything good to say about anyone, sent a message to Linnaeus:" Tell him I know no greater man on earth.
