(Johann) Wolfgang von Goethe
(1749-1832 e.v.)
by T. Apiryon
German novelist, playwright, poet, critic, journalist, painter, theater manager, statesman, educationalist, lawyer, scientist, philosopher, alchemist, mystic and Freemason. He was a true Renaissance Man, a success at all of his vocations and avocations, but he was indisputably one of the greatest authors and poets of all time. The best known of his many works are Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre "Master William's Year of Learning" (1821), Die Leiden des Jungen Werther "The Sorrows of Young Werther" (1774), Dichtung und Wahrheit "Poetry and Truth" (1811), and his masterpiece, Faust (posth. 1832). Faust is universally recognized as one of the supreme achievements in all of literature. Goethe poured the entire vast reservoir of his wisdom and talent into this semi-autobiographical work, which deals with the spirit of Western Man, the dualistic dilemma between spiritual longing and sensual desires, aspiration and indulgence; and the drive for access to the infinite through knowledge. Faust is based on the legend of Dr. Faustus, also popularized by Christopher Marlowe. Although there apparently was an historical Dr. Faustus (John Faust of Wittenberg, c.1520 e.v.), his mythical life story appears to have been built upon events from the lives of three other, more well-known men:

DEDICATION
Ye wavering forms draw near again as ever
When ye long since moved past my clouded eyes.
To hold you fast, shall I this time endeavour?
Still does my heart that strange illusion prize?
Ye crowd on me! 'Tis well! Your might assever
While ye from mist and murk around me rise.
As in my youth my heart again is bounding,
Thrilled by the magic breath your train surrounding.
Ye bring with you glad days and happy faces.
Ah, many dear, dear shades arise with you; Like some old tale that Time but half erases, First Love draws near to me and Friendship too. The pain returns, the sad lament retraces Life's labyrinthine, erring course anew And names the good souls who, by Fortune cheated Of lovely hours, forth from my world have fleeted. They do not hear the melodies I'm singing, The souls to whom my earliest lays I sang; Dispersed that throng who once to me were clinging, The echo's died away that one time rang.

Quotations "Don't feel guilty if you don't immediately love your stepchildren as you do your own, or as much as you think you should. Everyone needs time to adjust to the new family, adults included. There is no such thing as an "instant parent."
Actually, no concrete object lies outside of the poetic sphere as long as the poet knows how to use the object properly."

Johann von Goethe Quotes Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)
He alone is great and happy who requires neither to command nor to obey in order to secure his being of some importance in the world. To be pleased with one’s limits is a wretched state. He who moves not forward, goes backward. Mastery is often taken for egotism. Daring ideas are like chessmen moved forward; they may be beaten, but they may start a winning game. Altogether national hatred is something peculiar. You will always find it strongest and most violent where there is the lowest degree of culture. To have a positive religion is not necessary. To be in harmony with yourself and the universe is what counts, and this is possible without positive and specific formulation in words. None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who think they are free. We are never deceived: we deceive ourselves. Being brilliant is no great feat if you respect nothing. Mysteries are not necessarily miracles. Nothing is more revolting than the majority; for it consists of few vigorous predecessors, of knaves who accommodate themselves, of weak people who assimilate themselves, and the mass that toddles after them without knowing in the least what it wants. Everything great and intelligent is in the minority.

A correct answer is like an affectionate kiss.
Truth
A man doesn't learn to understand anything unless he loves it. [Ger., Man lernt nichts kennen also was man liebt.] Learning Understanding A man is not little when he finds it difficult to cope with circumstances, but when circumstances overmaster him. Circumstance A man may twist as he pleases, and do what he pleases, but he inevitably comes back to the track to which nature has destined him. Man A man who is ignorant of foreign languages is also ignorant of his own language. Language A man's errors are what make him amiable. Error A man's manners are a mirror in which he shows his portrait. Manners A man's name is not like a mantle, which merely hangs about him, and which one perchance may safely twitch and pull, but a perfectly fitting garment, which like the skin has grown over and over him, at which one cannot rake and scrape without injuring the man himself. Names A resolution that is communicated is no longer within thy power; thy attentions become now the plaything of chance; he who would have his commands certainly carried out must take man by surprise.
