GODWIN
or Godwine Harthacanute , against those of Canute's illegitimate son Harold Harefoot Edward the Confessor ). This brutality seems to have earned Godwin the enmity of Harthacanute and of Edward, who succeeded Harthacanute. Nevertheless, Godwin became even more powerful; he secured earldoms for his sons Sweyn and Harold and married (1045) his daughter, Edith, to Edward. In 1051, when Edward ordered Godwin to punish the people of Dover for a fracas with Eustace II of Boulogne and his retinue, Godwin took the opportunity to challenge the king's strength by refusing. Edward met the challenge and exiled Godwin and his family. However, in 1052, taking advantage of the popular dislike of the king's Norman friends, Godwin and his sons led an armed invasion of England, and the settlement they forced upon Edward restored Godwin to his former importance and outlawed many of the Norman newcomers. Godwin was succeeded as earl of Wessex by his son Harold. See F. M. Stenton

Her newest novel is Evenings at Five (April, 2003), the story of a couple and their 'happy hour' ritual of sharing not only drinks, but also a love of language and music (she is an author, he a composer). After thirty years, the husband unexpectedly dies and the wife must make sense of her new life without him. "With words alone, Gail Godwin has created an important piece of music about a love which death can only increase and deepen." Kurt Vonnegut "Gail Godwin has written a book about the heaviest matters of loss, grief, and loneliness with a touch so light that I was as often deeply amused by it as I was deeply moved. She has breathed her own breath into these pages, and they are alive with her life." - Frederick Buechner The Village Voice states, "More than any other contemporary writer, Gail Godwin is (reminiscent) of 19

    "Queen of the Underworld"
(Reviewed by Terez Rose APR 30, 2007) It is Miami, 1959 and Emma Gant has just graduated from college and left her native North Carolina to embark on a career as a journalist with the Miami Star Queen of the Underworld Star Godwin has won many fans for the way she depicts the thoughts and emotions of a woman on the cusp of discovering herself. In her 1984 novel, The Finishing School The bustling Miami Star Star Queen of the Underworld is compulsively readable in its nuanced Gail Godwin style. It entertains, educates and enlightens. No, this is not traditional Godwin. But it is a great read that will hopefully draw in more fans for this accomplished writer.
