Reflections on a timegripped age a site illuminating and extending james gleick s new book.
http://fasterbook.com/
a u t h o r p u b l i s h e r s f e e d b a c k r e v i e w s ... b u y t h e b o o k We know something's happening, and we're beginning to sense what it is. We're speeding up; our technology is speeding up; our arts and entertainment and the pace of invention and change it's all speeding up. And we care. If we don't understand time, we become its victims. This site is an attempt to collect some of the many diverse threads of this acceleration. (The book is a bit more: an attempt to weave them together, slowly.) For each chapter there's an excerpt and a set of links. The idea is to give the scent of a complex (and slowly developing) argument; anyone trying to figure out the drift of the book by reading these passages straight through will be disappointed. (This isn't the Cliffs Notes version.) The chapter-by-chapter links, meanwhile, point outward to resources meant to extend and illuminate various themes of the book. Some lead to actual source material for Faster ; others to recent news or oddities or phenomena that strike me as pertinent or amusing. The book, after all, is now frozen in time. The Web site isn't.

Summary by Michael McGoodwin, prepared 1988, 1998
The onset of Chaos
Feigenbaum Bifurcation (fractal image created by MCM) Acknowledgement : This work has been summarized using the 1987 editionpage numbers reference that edition. Quotations are for the most part taken from that work, as are paraphrases of its commentary. Overall impression : A good early popularization of an otherwise widely scattered and important body of knowledge. The more recent textbook Chaos and Fractals: New Frontiers of Science by by Peitgen H, Jurgens H, and Saupe D. provides more extensive details of the underlying mathematics and is ultimately more satisfying. "Where chaos begins, classical science stops." After relativity and quantum mechanics, chaos has become the century's third great revolution in physical sciences. Edward Lorenz (1960) creates a simple weather model in which small changes in starting conditions led to a marked ("catastrophic") changes in outcome (called "sensitive dependence on initial conditions") i.e., the "butterfly effect" (i.e.., "the notion that a butterfly stirring the air today in Peking can transform storm systems next month in New York".) Thus long-range prediction of imprecisely measured systems becomes an impossibility. He also found repetition which was never quite identical and studied non-linear systems that never attain a steady-state . Graphs of such a system (e.g., the behavior of a waterwheel) produced the Lorenz Attractor a bounded but never-repeating pattern. He published this observation in 1963 in "Deterministic Nonperiodic Flow" (p. 114), including a 2-dimensional representation of the phase-space diagram.

    (Full name James W. Gleick) American nonfiction writer, biographer, and journalist. The following entry presents an overview of Gleick's career through 1999.
    INTRODUCTION
    A best-selling science and technology author, Gleick has won recognition for his ability to make complex scientific concepts accessible to the general public. In an era of rapid technological advancement, Gleick is known for his extensive research and thorough explanation of the theoretical implications and real societal impact of cutting-edge science. Gleick's use of primary sources as well as previously published documents allows him to offer new information and insights on emerging scientific advances. His several books vary in their content and focus: Chaos: Making a New Science (1987) chronicles the development of chaos theory—or systems theory—a theoretical model used to examine extremely complex systems;

    Lead: LEAD: WONDERFUL LIFE The Burgess Shale and the Nature of History. By Stephen Jay Gould
    Text:
    WONDERFUL LIFE The Burgess Shale One fine day a half-billion years ago, an underwater mud slide (or some other catastrophe) buried a mob of strange creatures in what has now become a slab of exposed rock known as the Burgess Shale , high up in western Canada's Yoho National Park. They are certainly the weirdest animal fossils ever found, and they could easily be - as Stephen Jay Gould argues in his extraordinary book ''Wonderful Life'' - the most important. It was not long before this lucky accident that earthly life began its copious parade. True, for a few billion years before that, single-cell algae and bacteria filled the planet's seas and swamps, but these organisms were not doing much to engage the interest of future paleontologists. Then, suddenly, life as we know it - complex, multifarious, beastly life - exploded into existence all across the planet and began evolving in earnest. Eons later, a certain hairy, two-legged species has come to think of itself as the crowning achievement of this process. We are the capable and well-designed creature atop the evolutionary ladder. We have survived because we are fittest. If most of us have abandoned the idea that God designed the world for our personal benefit, we may nevertheless be clinging to a few prejudices of a different sort - that evolution means progress, for example. Mr. Gould, a great believer in the importance of cultural iconography, has spent years collecting cartoons and advertisements that illustrate the conventional view of human evolution, the view we all carry around in our heads. It is a procession of taller and taller primates, from a stoop-shouldered monkey dragging its long arms in the mud, to a more upright but still rather slovenly looking Neanderthal, to a clean-shaven country-club version of Homo sapiens.
