Legend? Hate the word. After you've been around for so long, it's like you're on the mailing list. Legend makes me think of tombstones. Graveyards. Most of my friends are dead. Some of my players are dead.

Gallico, Paul
Sportswriter
He [Red Grange] was not a flash in the pan or physical streak, an accident of sport. He was an artful dodger drilled and practiced in the techniques of avoiding tacklers skilled in the employment of every artifice of mental and physical razzle-dazzle and bafflement. . . He flowed rather than ran, with variable speeds that functioned instinctively with direct relation to the problems facing him. No game in the world is as tidy and dramatically neat as baseball, with cause and effect, crime and punishment, motive and result, so cleanly defined. Top of Page

Jeffrey Thomas's "Deadstock" - free e-book download
05:46 AM by Alexander Turcic in E-Books Elsewhere on the Net Jeffrey Thomas's novel Deadstock sounds like an excellent evening-filler for those who enjoy hard-SciFi action: Punktown, crime-ridden metropolis on the colony world, Oasis, is home to the scum of countless alien races. Stalking its mean streets is Jeremy Stake, the private detective with chameleon-like abilities he does not want and cannot control. There's his wealthy client, Fukuda, whose company makes synthetic life forms as playthings for the rich. Then there's Fukuda's beautiful teenage daughter, whose priceless one-of-a-kind living doll has been stolen. And there is the doll itself, growing in size, intelligence, and resentment.

Nigel Messenger George Gissing's expulsion from Owens College, Manchester in the summer of 1876, and his subsequent conviction and imprisonment for petty theft is a well known – perhaps the best known – fact of his biography and, seemingly, a spectacular act of self-destruction. In a life otherwise rather drably conservative, this was an episode of deviance from middle-class social conformity to rival any of the excesses of the late Victorian . The act was certainly a defining one. It condemned Gissing to the toils of new Grub Street instead of the cloistered life of classical scholarship for which he was clearly destined. Although much has been made of this episode as a class crime with clear social consequences, there seems to have been rather less speculation as to what inner compulsion might have driven an ambitious young scholar to exchange his hard-won middle-class advantages for a precarious life of literary endeavour in the murky world of the London underclass. There are too many gaps in the record to attempt any just assessment of Gissing's relationship with Nell Harrison, the young girl that he sought to save from a life on the streets, stole for, and eventually married after a year in America. On his side, letters and diaries have been censored or destroyed, on hers, inevitably, silence.

    [Hugh] Carnaby was a fair example of the wellbred, well-fed Englishmantall, brawny, limber, not uncomely, with a red neck, a powerful jaw, and a keen eye. Something more of repose, of self-possession, and a slightly more intellectual brow, would have made him the best type of conquering, civilizing Briton. He came of good family, but had small inheritance; his tongue told of age-long domination;

    his physique and carriage showed the horseman, the game-stalker, the nomad. Hugh had never bent over books since the day when he declined the university and got leave to join Colonel Bosworth's exploring party in the Caucasus. After a boyhood of straitened circumstances, he profited by a skilful stewardship which allowed him to hope for some seven hundred a year; his elder brother, Miles, a fine fellow, who went into the army, pinching himself to benefit Hugh and their sister Ruth. Miles was now Major Carnaby, active on the North-West Frontier. Ruth was wife of a missionary in some land of swamps; doomed by climate, but of spirit indomitable. It seemed strange that Hugh, at five and thirty, had done nothing particular. (W12)
