    Who is Andre Gide?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Andre Gide was a French author and 1947 Nobel Prize laureate. Much of his work is autobiographical or semi-autobiographical and deals with the struggle to reconcile the sexual and spiritual aspects of the self. Moralistic constraints and intellectual freedom are important concepts he often put at odds with one another in his work. His writing style is simple and sparse, but with profound emotional depth that requires much reading between the lines. Gide was born into a French Protestant family in Paris on 22 November 1869. His father, a professor of law at Paris University, died when Andre Gide was 11 years old. Gide spent his childhood in Normandy and began writing when at a very young age. His first novel, The Notebooks of Andre Walter , was published in 1891. Gide spent the years of 1893 and 1894 in Northern Africa, where he met and befriended Irish author Oscar Wilde. Gide discovered his own homosexuality during his time in Northern Africa and had his first homosexual experiences with some of the local boys. Gide's personal moral struggle as a homosexual raised in a strict Protestant home influenced much of his later work. Shortly after Gide returned to France, his mother passed away, and he married his cousin, Madeleine Rondeaux, in 1895. Heartbroken, Gide wrote about his unconsummated marriage with Madeleine in

    ANDRE GIDE'S 'THE IMMORALIST'
For man himself is a mystery, and all humanity rests upon reverence before the mystery that is man. Thomas Mann A first reading of Gide's preface to is divided into three parts which are framed by the letter written from Sidi revealing Michel's present desolation and by the concluding remarks which leave Michel's future unsolved in the hands of the Président du Conseil, and, we the readers, are called upon to judge ourselves without hypocrisy as we, too, are placed before a Grand Inquisitor: "Il en est plus d'un aujourd'hui, je le crains, qui oserait en ce récit se reconnaître," says one of Michel's friends (p. 13). The frame serves the additional purpose of placing Michel in a potential relationship to society, for no matter how hermit-like he wishes to live, he is forced to be part of the larger circle of humanity. The story of THE ROAD TO SELF-DESTRUCTION: THE THEMES OF THE STORY Freedom of choice will like the rich man who imagines that he is poor, and will die of want; you

"I am neither sad nor gay; the air here fills you with a vague exhalation, induces a state which seems as remote from gaiety as it is from suffering; perhaps that is happiness." "Our happiness, during this last part of the trip, was so untroubled, so calm, that I have nothing to tell about it. What would be the description of happiness? Nothing, except what prepares and then what destroys it, can be told." "The capacity to get free is nothing; the capacity to be free, that is the task." I. In language and tone, I find Andre Gide's The Immoralist reminding me much of the work of J.M. Coetzee, specifically Disgrace . Both authors use a very pared down, austerely beautiful language; in a translator's note, Richard Howard calls Gide's voice "raised almost to the tension of the lyre," which seems about as good a description as can be given. Thematically, both books are wrestling with the following idea, quoted from Gide: "The capacity to get free is nothing; the capacity to be free, that is the task." Like Disgrace The Immoralist's protagonist eventually evolves into an amoral state (despite the title, I think he's more beyond morals than transgressing them):

    Review Summary
By the time the 98-minute documentary Andre Gide made it to the screen, its titular subject had passed away. As a result, the scenes in which author/playwright Gide discusses his work, his life and his goals take on an eerie poignancy. Director Marc Allegret employs a combination of still photos, newsreel footage and interviews to paint a vivid portrait of Gide's role in the new French literary movement of the early 1900s. Also prominent in the proceedings are excerpts from a filmed record of Gide's trip to Africa, also helmed by Allegret. The most controversial passages of the film concern Andre Gide's flirtation with, and ultimately break from, the communist party. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
