French writer. The son of a law professor, Gide began writing at an early age. His early prose poem Fruits of the Earth (1897) reflects his increasing awareness of his homosexuality. The novellas The Immoralist (1902) and Strait Is the Gate (1909) showed his mastery of classical construction, and Lafcadio's Adventures displayed his gift for mordant satire. In 1908 he cofounded , the literary review that would unite progressive French writers for 30 years. The autobiographical (1924) is among the great works of confessional literature. Corydon (1924), a defense of homosexuality, was violently attacked. The Counterfeiters (1926) is his most complex novel. He become a champion of society's victims and outcasts and was for a time attracted to communism; with the outbreak of World War II he gained a greater appreciation for tradition. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1947. document.writeln(AAMB2);

As his family was wealthy, he was able to devote himself to writing. His first prose work was the symbolist influenced, anonymously authored The Notebooks of Andre Walter , but by 1900 he had practically abandoned poetry. Gide fell in love with his cousin, the devoutly Protestant Madeleine Rondeaux, but the family separated them. In 1895, following his mother's death, Gide married Madeleine, who inspired a number of his works. Although they loved each other, their marriage was unconsummated. In 1893 and 1894 Gide traveled to North Africa, learning different moral and sexual conventions which gave basis for his psychological novels The Immoralist (1902) and Strait is the Gate (1909). In Algeria he met Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas, who shocked him with their boldness and precipitated his revolt against his puritanical background. It was here that he realised that he was homosexual. Henceforth his work lived on the never resolved tensions between a strict artistic discipline, a puritanical moralism, and the desire for unlimited sensual indulgence and abandonment to life. Les Nourritures terrestres Fruits of the Earth ), a book of prose poems, became in the 1920s his most popular work, influencing a generation of young writers, including the existentialists

Gide was born in Paris, France on November 22, 1869. His father was a Paris University professor of law and died 1880. His uncle was the political economist Charles Gide. Gide was brought up in isolated conditions in Normandy and became a prolific writer at an early age. In 1895, after his mother's death, he married his cousin Madeleine Rondeaux but the marriage remained unconsummated.
In 1891 Gide published his first novel, Les Cahiers d'Andre Walter. From 1893-94 Gide traveled in northern Africa. He befriended Oscar Wilde in Algiers and later began to recognize his homosexual orientation. In 1896 he was mayor of a commune in Normandy.
In 1908 Gide helped found the literary magazine Nouvelle Revue française (The New French Review).
In the 1920s Gide became a inspiration for writers like Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre. In 1923 he published a book on Fyodor Dostoyevsky; however, when he defended homosexuality in the public edition of Corydon (1924) he received widespread condemnation. He later considered this his most important work.
In 1923 he conceived a daughter named Catherine with another woman, Maria Van Rysselberghe. His wife Madeleine died in 1938. Later he used the background of his unconsummated marriage in his novel Et Nuck Manet in Te (1951).

The Immoralist
Andre Gide
“Knowing how to free oneself is nothing; the difficult thing is knowing how to live with that freedom”- this is the ultimate lesson that Gide gives in “The Immoralist”, even though as he himself has said “I refrained from passing judgement”. As a result this novel will always be open to interpretation, as it presents the classic universal problem of individual freedom, identity, and what constitutes “life”.

    Why the Interest?
    Gide was a character. He was well-off financially and didn't have to pursue any type of career. Nevertheless he took his writing very seriously. I ran across various quotes from his works and found them very insightful. By the way, he is one of two authors whose entire body of work was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum , which means at the time of his death Roman Catholics were forbidden to read his writings. Brief bio sketch

He established a reputation as an unconventional novelist with The Immoralist (1902, tr. 1930), a partly autobiographical work in which he portrays a young man contravening ordinary moral standards in his search for self-fulfillment. 20. Andre Gide's Recovery Of The Old Adam
    Quite unlike Jean Cocteau in Le Livre Blanc, André gide in L Immoraliste (1902) refuses to take defeat for granted. Neither does he take triumph for granted
    http://www.infopt.demon.co.uk/gide.htm
    Quite unlike Jean Cocteau in Le Livre Blanc L'Immoraliste (1902) refuses to take defeat for granted. Neither does he take triumph for granted, but the total impact of the novel has more in it of salvation than of despair. Cocteau and Gide of course deal with substantively different issues, the former with the problem of how an overt homosexual suffers from the oppression of homophobic culture, the latter with the drama of how a latent homosexual rediscovers his suppressed self. Gide took offence both at the general reading public who regarded his novel as an exposition of a "problem" — which prompts him to criticize "the ephemeral public" for being "greedy only for sweets and trifles" — and the critical establishment, those "certain distinguished minds" who regarded the novel merely as a case study of "a sufferer from disease." Pseudo-Freudian analysis of both works is still the rule today, and readers and critics still fail to appreciate either works as detailed studies of the homophobic context in which the homosexual finds himself. Although Michel's homosexuality may remain "latent" throughout the novel — no specific homosexual acts are explicitly delineated in the text —
