Kahlil Gibran on Marriage
From Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet Then Almitra spoke again and said, And what of Marriage, Master?
And he answered saying:
You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.

The whole earth is my birthplace and all humans are my brothers.
The major works of Kahlil Gibran should be browsed at least once by all students of life, for his insight into the world is one of depth. He has authored many books - the one possible best well known being "The Prophet" In 1971 a small collection of quite short simple sayings of Kahlil Gibran's were selected and collated by Ben W. Whitley, illustrated by George Kauffman and published in a small booklet by Hallmark Editions. The following texts are taken from this collection, and are best reviewed as an introduction to the nature of Gibran's thinking, expression and vision. Artist, poet, and philosopher, was a prophet. Long before peace, brotherhood and ecology became issues of the day, Gibran told us of their importance. He spoke out for life.

Links Khalil Gibran was born to a Maronite Christian family in Besharri, Lebanon (then part of Syria and the Ottoman Empire).
His father, also named Khalil Gibran, had drinking problems and accumulated many gambling debts. This led Gibran's father to leave his job as assistant to his uncle who was a pharmacist, and take work as an 'enforcer' for the local Ottoman administrator. He eventually ended up in jail.
Because of the family's poverty, Gibran did not receive a formal education as a young boy, but a local priest taught him Arabic and Syriac, as well as the stories of the Bible and infused in him an awareness of the mystical dimensions of Maronite Christianity.
When Gibran was eight, his mother took him, his older half-brother and his two younger sisters to Boston. Although shy, Gibran quickly learned English and, thanks to a scholarship, started to receive more of a formal education. The boy became fascinated by Boston's world of art and music, visiting galleries and performances. At age 13, his artistic gifts came to the attention of artistic cultural circles in Boston, where he was further introduced to artistic trends.

And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair. Earth Art arises when the secret vision of the artist and the manifestation of nature agree to find new shapes. Art Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror. Beauty Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart. Beauty Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother. Doubt Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation. Separation Generosity is giving more than you can, and pride is taking less than you need. Generosity If the other person injures you, you may forget the injury; but if you injure him you will always remember. Injury If you reveal your secrets to the wind you should not blame the wind for revealing them to the trees.

    The Prophet: Kahlil Gibran
I love what Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran says about children in his book The Prophet . I try to remember this often.
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit,
    not even in your dreams.
    You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;

According to a relative of the same name, the Gibran family's origins are obscure. Though his mother was the "offspring of a priestly, and distinguished family", the Gibran clan was "small and undistinguished." He was born in the Christian Maronite town of Bsharri in today's northern Lebanon - at the time, part of the Ottoman Empire - and grew up in the region of Bsharri . His maternal grandfather was a Maronite Catholic priest As a result of his family's poverty, Gibran did not receive any formal schooling during his youth in Lebanon. However, priests visited him regularly and taught him about the Bible , as well as the Syriac and Arabic languages . During these early days, Gibran began developing ideas that would later form some of his major works. In particular, he conceived of
