To w a k e at d a w n with a w i n g e d heart and give thanks for a n o t h e r day of loving." ~ Kahlil Gibran Lebanese poet and artist Kahlil Gibran (1883–1931) shared the beauty of his winged heart and his profound gift of spiritual insight in the masterpiece The Prophet (1923), an autobiography of 26 poetic essays. "In the depth of my soul there is a wordless song," he wrote. With words and wordlessness, he celebrated the sacredness of life and the presence of God everywhere. " Wisdom is not in words ," he believed. "Wisdom is meaning within words." Merging Eastern and Western philosophies , Gibran was influenced by his Turkish childhood , his adopted America , and the time he spent studying art with Auguste Rodin in Paris "In one drop of water are found all the secrets of all the oceans," he explained. A perennial bestseller, The Prophet 's appeal is timeless. The words inspired seekers from the 20s Jazz Age , to the flower children of the 60s, to those today who continue to search for life's meaning.

A black and white photograph of a young, swarthy man, probably in his late teens, beams powerfully from the pages of a book. Unremarkable in itself, it shows you a young Arab of the late 19th Century, with thick hair alive in its form, a shapely, slightly-compressed mouth hinting at emotion, and a dimpled chin full of resolve. It is not until you see the ever-so-slightly cocked eyebrow, the shoulders thrown back, and the dark eyes alive with all forms of knowledge and profound resignation, that you begin to wonder who this young man could be. The challenge here then, is to attempt to present the boy, his growth and development, and the man he eventually and all-too-briefly became. The hope and intention being that the work, the thoughts and the images this mere mortal bequeathed to us all becomes a mystery that the reader seeks out and devours.

Non sono né un artista né un poeta.
Ho trascorso i miei giorni scrivendo e dipingendo,

Content Books Getting Started With Kahlil Gibran Contacting Kahlil Gibran Kahlil Gibran was a Lebanese-American philosophical essayist, novelist, mystical poet, and artist. He believed that if a sensible way of living and thinking could be found, people would have mastery over their lives. His work influenced American popular culture in the 1960s, and his style, a combination of beauty and spirituality, became known as “Gibranism.” Born in Bechari (Bsharri), Lebanon in 1883, Gibran was modeling, drawing, and writing at an early age. After coming to the United States, Gibran was introduced to F. Holland Day, a photographer, who tutored him in art and literature. In 1904, Gibran had his first art exhibition in Boston, and in 1912, he settled in New York, where he devoted himself to writing and painting. The basic subject in Gibran’s art was naked human bodies, tenderly intertwined.

An excerpt from "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran
Then said Almitra, Speak to us of Love.
And he raised his head and looked upon the people,
and there fell a stillness upon them.
And with a great voice he said: When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams
as the north wind lays waste the garden. For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.
Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth. Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself. He threshes you to make you naked.

    Prophet Motive: Kahlil Gibran
I highly recommend this amusing and informative account of Kahlil Gibran by Joan Acocella, writing in the New Yorker , on the occasion of a new volume of Gibran's work. The title tells it all: "Prophet Motive." I had not realized that Gibran is said to be the third best-selling poet of all time (after Shakespeare and La-Tzu), based almost entirely on sales of The Prophet . (At least as of 1997, Jalal al-Din Rumi was the best selling poet in the US.)
I could never understand, even as someone who is in some senses a product of "the sixties," why The Prophet
It's another example of what I'd call "popular Orientalism," rather stupid and banal, but nonetheless pretty harmless. (Although it wasn't really harmless for Gibran, who made lots of money but seems to have felt himself to be a fraud, and so drank himself to death. His adherents seem to prefer the more romantic, but mistaken, idea that tuberculosis did him in.)
What I still don't understand is why Gibran, a Maronite Christian from what is now Lebanon, who emigrated to the US as a child in 1895, spelled his first name Kahlil. The first letter of his name, Ø® in Arabic, is properly, and normally, transliterated 'kh.'
