Heart

A martial nobility and stubborn commons, possessed of arms, tenacious of property, and collected into constitutional assemblies form the only balance capable of preserving a free constitution against the enterprise of an aspiring prince.
Freedom
A taste for books, which is still the pleasure and glory of my life. Books All that is human must retrograde if it does not advance. Progress As long as mankind shall continue to bestow more liberal applause on their destroyers than on their benefactors, the thirst of military glory will ever be the vice of the most exalted characters. War Beauty is an outward gift which is seldom despised, except by those to whom it has been refused. Beauty Conversation enriches the understanding, but solitude is the school of genius.

Edward Gibbon (1737-1794)
Biographical note
Historian, was born at Putney of an ancient Kentish family. His father was Edward G., and his mother Judith Porten. He was the only one of a family of seven who survived infancy, and was himself a delicate child with a precocious love of study. After receiving his early education at home he was sent to Westminster School, and when 15 was entered at Magdalen College, Oxford, where, according to his own account, he spent 14 months idly and unprofitably. Oxford was then at its lowest ebb, and earnest study or effort of any kind had little encouragement. G., however, appears to have maintained his wide reading in some degree, and his study of Bossuet and other controversialists led to his becoming in 1753 a Romanist. To counteract this his father placed him under the charge of David Mallet ( q.v. Decline and Fall Autobiography [From A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature by John W. Extract from Chapter 38 of gibbon s Decline anf Fall of the Roman Empire

Edward Gibbon, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire
The Enlightenment found many of its virtues ready-made in the world of ancient Rome: economic abundance, and international political structure and a common language for many people. Of course, the greatness of Rome also led to its eventual collapse and fall, and this singular fact has exercised the mind of the historian ever since. Gibbon was perhaps the first to make such a sustained investigation of this kind of event. The following selection is from Chapter XXXVIII: General Observations on the Fall of the Roman Empire in the West. A brief list of resources follows the excerpt. The Greeks, after their country had been reduced into a province, imputed the triumphs of Rome, not to the merit, but to the fortune, of the republic. The inconstant goddess who so blindly distributes and resumes her favours, had now The decay of Rome has been frequently ascribed to the translation of the seat of empire but this history has already shown that the powers of Government were divided As the happiness of a future Should these speculations be found doubtful or fallacious, there still remains a more humble source of comfort and hope. The discoveries of ancient and modern navigators, and the domestic history or tradition of the most enlightened nations, represent the

Life
  • After an uneven education, Edward Gibbon Wakefield became a messenger for a member of the diplomatic service, and travelled through Europe In 1816 Wakefield eloped with a 16-year-old heiress, Eliza Pattle, but managed to talk his way out of trouble and into a promotion. After the birth of their son, Edward Jerningham Wakefield in 1820, Eliza died. In 1826 Wakefield ran off with another young girl because he hoped that her father would be forced to help him with his political career if she was his wife. His brother and stepmother helped him, and when the girl's family caught up with them, they were brought to trial. The two brothers were sentenced to 3 years in prison. While in prison Wakefield read a number of books on economics and social ideas, and worked out his theory on

Edward Gibbon
Edward Gibbon was the eldest of seven children born to Edward Gibbon and Julia Porten, and their only child to survive infancy. He attributed his survival to the affectionate care of his aunt, Catherine Porten, " the true mother of my mind as well as my health It was she who encouraged him in his " invincible love of reading ," which he pursued widely in his grand-father's library until his " indiscriminate appetite subsided by degrees in the historic line Gibbon's early schooling had been irregular and frequently interrupted by illness. Then, suddenly, as he approached his sixteenth year, "his disorders wonderfully vanished." Shortly afterwards his father sent him to Oxford. Here he received neither instruction nor companionship, finding the boys frivolous, the dons indolent, and his fourteen months at the university "the most idle and unprofitable" of his whole life. In the course of his solitary literary rambles during these fourteen months, Gibbon became converted to Catholicism. He wrote to his father of the step, and the elder Gibbon, with the impetuosity that seems to have characterised his dealings with his son, sent the sixteen-year-old youth to Lausanne. Here under the tutelage of the Calvinist minister, M. Pavilliard, young Gibbon repudiated his Catholicism and followed a carefully supervised program of studies with particular emphasis on the French and Latin classics and on the mastery of these languages. At the age of twenty, Gibbon fell in love with Suzanne Curchod, who found his unprepossessing appearance "

Classics Edward Gibbons' Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire This is the master index for Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Gibbon (b. 1737, d. 1794) upon visiting the ruins of the Roman forum in 1762, during his Grand Tour, was inspired to write a history of the Roman Empire and its long fall. Volume one was published in 1776 after a decade of labor, Volumes two and three in 1781; and the last three were released in 1788. Gibbon was one of the leading figures of the Enlightenment, and his unvarnished take on the early Church has led to the book being banned sporadically. The Decline and Fall has had a massive cultural impact, including being an inspiration for Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. The sheer dimensions of this book mean that it is seldom reprinted in entirety any more. This is a transcription of the unabridged (and public domain) 1845 edition, with notes and editing by H. H. Milman. Note: The images on this page and each volume's index are previously unreleased photographs which I took in Rome in 1968, newly scanned. They are not public domain.JBH.

Edward Gibbon Public Domain. Courtesy of Wikipedia. Definition: The English historian Edward Gibbon (May 8, 1737, to Jan. 16, 1794), a friend of Voltaire and Diderot, is best known for his The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire , which tells about the decline and fall of Rome from the second century A.D. to the 15th century fall of Constantinople. Gibbon was unsympathetic to Christianity, humorously explaining one of the economic reasons for the decline as worthless Christian expenditure: "A large portion of public and private wealth was consecrated to the specious demands of charity and devotion; and the soldiers pay was lavished on the useless multitudes of both sexes, who could only plead the merits of abstinence and chastity."

    HUMAN HISTORY
Sir Edward Gibbon is one of the finest wordsmiths to have ever written in the English tongue. If you love history and literature, I suggest you wade through patiently his voluminous Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and devour Gibbon's many delicious instances of sapient wit and wisdom. "The theologian may indulge the pleasing task of describing Religion as she descended from Heaven, arrayed in her native purity. A more melancholy duty is imposed on the historian. He must discover the inevitable mixture of error and corruption which she contracted in a long residence upon Earth, among a weak and degenerate race of beings."
    Sir Edward Gibbon
"The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" "The historian should be fearless and incorruptible; a man of independence, loving frankness and truth; one who, as the poets says, calls a fig a fig and a spade a spade. He should yield to neither hatred nor affection, not should be unsparing and unpitying. He should be neither shy nor deprecating, but an impartial judge, giving each side all it deserves but no more. He should know in his writing no country and no city; he should bow to no authority and acknowledge no king. He should never consider what this or that man will think, but should state the facts as they really occurred."
