Edward Gibbon Dates:
Born: April 27, 1737 in Putney (in South London), England
Died: January 16, 1794 Biography:
Edward Gibbon was made famous by his multi-volume work The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire , written between, 1776 and 1787. For quite a long time it was the standard history on the Roman civilization and continues to be used and read to this day. Despite such a contribution to the field of historiography, Gibbon's opinion about history always remained cynical: History is little more than the register of the crimes, follies and misfortunes of mankind. Gibbon's prose style is rather elaborate and ornate, something which makes it difficult for many readers to get through his books. Indeed, some have condemned his writing as atrocious, but you can judge for yourself from this, the opening paragraph: Gibbon is also unusual in that the footnotes play such an important role in his work. Certainly, any scholarly book will have important information and references contained in footnotes, but Gibbon's

General Observations on the Fall of the Roman Empire in the West
by Edward Gibbon
The Greeks, after their country had been reduced into a province, imputed the triumphs of Rome, not to the merit, but to the FORTUNE, of the republic. The inconstant goddess, who so blindly distributes and resumes her favours, had now consented (such was the language of envious flattery) to resign her wings, to descend from her globe, and to fix her firm and immutable throne on the banks of the Tiber. A wiser Greek, who has composed, with a philosophic spirit, the memorable history of his own times, deprived his countrymen of this vain and delusive comfort by opening to their view the deep foundations of the greatness of Rome. The fidelity of the citizens to each other, and to the state, was confirmed by the habits of education and the prejudices of religion. Honour, as well as virtue, was the principle of the republic; the ambitious citizens laboured to deserve the solemn glories of a triumph; and the ardour of the Roman youth was kindled into active emulation, as often as they beheld the domestic images of their ancestors. The temperate struggles of the patricians and plebeians had finally established the firm and equal balance of the constitution; which united the freedom of popular assemblies with the authority and wisdom of a senate-and the executive powers of a regal magistrate. When the consul displayed the standard of the republic, each citizen bound himself, by the obligation of

Some Major Themes of the Decline and Fall
As noted in the first part of this essay, Gibbon feels, thinks, and writes as a Republican Roman. When he praises or criticises someone or something, it is always from the standpoint of a contemporary Roman citizen. The following Table of Opposites will help us understand what Gibbon's likes and dislikes are:
civilisation - barbarism vigour - enervation manliness - effeminacy simplicity - luxury (constitutional) liberty - despotic ruler/servile subjects Rome - Byzantium/Asia/the Orient sociability - unsociability moderation - fanaticism/zeal/enthusiasm reason/philosophy - religion/superstition

The City of Alexandria
When Alexander the Great came to Egypt on a flying visit in 330BC, he founded one of the many cities that were to bear his name. He left his administrator, Cleomenes, to build the new city as he made further conquests but soon Alexander was dead and his generals grabbed those parts of his Empire that they could. Ptolemy I Soter took Egypt and, after disposing of Cleomenes, later made Alexandria his capital where he and his descendants ruled for three centuries. They made little effort to integrate the rest of Egypt into their Greek culture but formed their coastal capital into the great intellectual and cultural centre of its age.

Executive summary: Colonizer of Australia, New Zealand British colonial statesman, born in London on the 20th of March 1796, of an originally Quaker family. His father, Edward Wakefield, author of Ireland, Statistical and Political Letter from Sydney (1829), published while he was still in prison, but composed with such graphic power that it has been continually quoted as if written on the spot. After his release Wakefield seemed disposed for a while to turn his attention to social questions at home, and produced a tract on the Punishment of Death , with a terribly graphic picture of the condemned sermon in Newgate, and another on incendiarism in the rural districts, with an equally powerful exhibition of the degraded condition of the agricultural laborer. He soon, however, became entirely engrossed with colonial affairs, and, having impressed John Stuart Mill , Colonel Torrens and other leading economists with the value of his ideas, became a leading though not a conspicuous manager of the South Australian Company, by which the colony of South Australia was ultimately founded. In 1833 he published anonymously

Edward Gibbon
Edward Gibbon was born in Putney, (now part of London), in 1737 as the first child of Edward Gibbon, a Member of Parliament, and his wife. Seven children in all were born into the family and young Edward Gibbon, although a notably sickly child, was luckier than his siblings in that he was the only one to survive childhood.
Due to his poor health Gibbon had almost no formal schooling. Following his mother's death in 1747 his father chose to live a retired life in Hampshire leaving young Edward Gibbon to the care of an aunt and grandfather in Putney.
In this household Gibbon had a free access to his grandfather's library where, with his aunt's encouragement, he became an avid reader - an initial "indiscriminate appetite subsided by degrees in the historic line." His health continued to prevent his being consistently educated in any formal educational establishment obliging the family to arrange for private tutoring until, at age 15, his health suddenly improved and his father was thus able to enter him into Magdalen College at the University of Oxford.
Given his unconventional early life Gibbon traveled to Oxford at this time "with a stock of erudition which might have puzzled a doctor, and a degree of ignorance of which a schoolboy might have been ashamed." Gibbon came to hate Oxford, he did not like his tutors and they did not like him - he was afterwards to write of the fourteen months he spent there as being "the most idle and unprofitable of my whole life."

WAKEFIELD, Edward Gibbon
Theorist on colonisation and a principal founder of New Zealand. Edward Gibbon Wakefield was born in London on 20 March 1796, the eldest son of Edward Wakefield, a London land agent and surveyor, and his wife Susanna, n©e Crash, an Essex farmer's daughter. The Wakefields came of Quaker stock, and Edward Wakefield, though not a practising Quaker, was an active philanthropic reformer, best known for his Account of Ireland, Statistical and Political The case had excited great public interest and ruined Wakefield's hopes of entering Parliament; but his three years in Newgate gave him the material for writing two books, The Punishment of Death and A Letter from Sydney England and America , in which Wakefield further developed his ideas, and the explorations of Sturt, revived interest. By the end of 1833 a South Australia Association had been formed and in 1834 Parliament passed an Act providing for the foundation of a colony and the management of its colonisation by specially appointed commissioners. Wakefield played an important part behind the scenes, but the illness of his daughter, who died in Portugal in February 1835, distracted his attention from South Australian affairs. The decision of the commissioners in May to fix the price of land at 12s. an acre, which Wakefield thought too low, caused him to break with them. In 1836 Wakefield gave evidence before a committee of the House of Commons on the disposal of lands in the British colonies. It recommended that his principles should be embodied in an Act of Parliament and applied to the whole Empire. He was now turning his attention to New Zealand and by May 1837 was forming a New Zealand Association for the systematic colonisation of the country. Its first approach to the Colonial Office was unsuccessful, but by the end of the year the Government was willing to consent to the incorporation of a company by royal charter. The Association, however, rejected the terms.
