Growing up in a bilingual household was to prove advantageous to George in his later years of travel, but the choice, from a literary perspective, between writing in French and German was a serious and weighty concern for the young poet. “Eric Voegelin and the Stefan George Circle Eric Voegelin and the Stefan George Circle Late in life Eric Voegelin recorded that his work on Plato was done “in the spirit” of the Plato scholars of the Stefan George circle. Today, in the time allotted to me, I want to talk about George’s place in the Plato scholarship of his circle, and therefore his role in Voegelin’s understanding of Plato. The high point of George’s influence on Voegelin was in the early 1930’s, and I will confine my remarks to Voegelin’s works of that time. I In a 1930 lecture on Max Weber Voegelin pointed out that due to Germany ’s long history of religious and political strife, the nation had not achieved a unified view of the human being. The situation, so Voegelin, is so bad, that in Germany "each individual must create a new world for himself". Following the first mention of Weber by name, and as the individual who bears this spiritual isolation heroically, but does not rise above it, Voegelin notes: At the deep point of spiritual decline, "the creator of the new language arose in the person of Stefan George”. A few sentences later, Voegelin compares Weber and George. The dominance of Weber’s intellect paralyzed him for practical action and he therefore failed to respond to the calling of charismatic leader, Weber was not open to the "renewal of Eros out of the spirit of the ancient world", and Weber rejected the "rebirth of the divine in man" ("Wiedergeburt des Göttlichen im Menschen"). In these three points George is Weber's antipode: the poet took very seriously his calling as charismatic leader, he saw the renewal of Eros out of the spirit of the ancient world as the necessary step toward the renewal of Occidental culture, and, against Weber's notion of the "disenchanted world", George proclaimed the divine presence.

In dieser Zeit entstehen bereits viele Gedichte, die aber erst 1901 in "Die Fibel" erscheinen. Nach dem Abitur bereist George mehrere europäische Metropolen. So auch London, Mailand, Montreux und Paris. Hier begegnet er dem französischen Dichter und wichtigen Vertreter des Symbolismus Stephane Marlarme´. Dieser beeinflusste stark die ersten zehn Schaffensjahre Georges. In diese erste Schaffensperiode fallen die zwischen 1890 und 1900 enstandenen Gedichtbände Hymnen, Maximin-Kult" . Zeugnis gibt hiervon ein "Gedenkbuch" für Maximin und der 1907 erscheinende Gedichtband "Der siebente Ring". Es ist Georges siebtes Werk und das erste, in dem der Dichter einen mahnenden und urteilenden Ton anschlägt, wie er sich in den noch folgenden Werken fortsetzt. Auch besteht der Kreis um George inzwischen nicht mehr aus Gleichen und Gleichgesinnten, sondern ist eine Gruppierung von Jüngern (vornehmlich auch Jüngeren) um den "Meister" George. Im Kreis erhofft sich George die Keimzelle für einen neuen "Staat", dessen Ausgestaltung in den für den Dichter bestimmenden Werten der Nachfolge und Nachahmung eines geistigen Führers liegen.
