Finally, it has started. People have begun to speak of impeaching President George W. Bushnot in hushed whispers but openly, in newspapers, on the Internet, in ordinary conversations and even in Congress. As a former member of Congress who sat on the House Judiciary Committee during the impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon, I believe they are right to do so.

Elizabeth George Speare
Elizabeth George Speare (November 21, 1908- November 15, 1994) was a respected, dedicated, and talented American children's author who won many awards for her historical fiction novels, including two Newbery Medals. She has been called one of America’s 100 most popular children's authors and much of her work has become mandatory reading in many schools throughout the nation. Indeed, because her books have sold so well she is also cited as one of the Educational Paperback Association's top 100 authors. Speare was born in Melrose, Massachusetts to Harry Allan and Demetria George. Her childhood, as she later recalled, was "exceptionally happy" and Melrose was "an ideal place in which to have grown up, close to fields and woods where we hiked and picnicked, and near to Boston where we frequently had family treats of theaters and concerts." She had an extended family with one brother and many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and, most importantly, very loving and supportive parents. Speare lived much of her life in New England, the setting for many of her books.

“I really enjoy working with an energetic team of experts that have a common sense of purpose: Enhance drug discovery by making fundamental discoveries in the genetics of disease.”
Elizabeth George

Elizabeth George, a Lab Head in the Models of Disease group, is determined to find new drug targets by modifying genes or how they are expressed. Before coming to Novartis, Elizabeth showed that the specific removal of a small segment of an extracellular matrix gene in mice reduces atherosclerosis, the disease that causes heart attacks. This experiment demonstrated how manipulating genes in animal models mimics human disease better than tissue culture assays. “Many human diseases are attributed to altered genotypes,” said Elizabeth, “Thus, analyzing genes that harbor those alterations can provide clues for drug discovery.”
The Models of Disease group provides a critical service for all disease area research groups at the Novartis Institutes of BioMedical Research (NIBR). Elizabeth describes the group as a team of experts that helps find novel drug targets by manipulating genes to create phenotypes that resemble human disease. “My specialty is phenotyping at the molecular level,” said Elizabeth, “My lab looks for and characterizes functional changes in animals that have been purposefully mutated.” Today’s geneticists can knock-out or overexpress specific genes in whole animals or in a particular organ or tissue, insert DNA into the genome, and even engineer whole chromosomes.

    • Subatomic physics and the weak interaction . The weak interaction is one of the four fundamental forces of nature. This force is responsible for nuclear beta decay, and makes possible some of the nuclear reactions that power our sun. I'm working on experiments to make precision measurements of observables in nuclear beta decay in order to test the Standard Model of the weak force. These experiments are being done in collaboration with Paul Voytas at Wittenberg and with colleagues at the University of Wisconsin - Madison (current student involvement: one student).

    Elizabeth George Speare
    Introduction
Elizabeth George Speare's novel The Witch of Blackbird Pond This is not an exaggeration: almost every child in America will read a book by Elizabeth George Speare before graduating from high school. She is on the list of America’s 100 most popular children’s authors, and she has won many awards, including two Newbery Medals, the most prestigious prize given to children’s literature. Her stellar career as a writer, however, almost didn’t happen. Though she wrote a good deal as a child, she stopped for many years and focused her energy and attention on her family. Speare didn’t start writing commercially until she was in her 40s and her children were in their early teens. Like her most famous work, The Witch of Blackbird Pond , many of her stories are set in New England and focus on young people who are at a critical turning point in their lives.
