Theater Review: Jean Genet's The Balcony in New York City
Written by Jon Sobel Published April 01, 2007 See also: Interview: Tom Kennedy - The Washington Post 's Multi-Media Initiative Break-Up and Divorce ... Let's Put On A Web Page! The playwright and novelist Jean Genet may be as famous for his life as for his work. His early stints in jail certainly informed his stagecraft. The Balcony , a claustrophobic acting-out of the interchangeability of illusion and reality, is no exception. Genet's best known play, The Blacks , directed by Gene Frankel (RIP), had the longest off-Broadway run of any straight play in the 1960s. The Balcony , too, has a notable history that includes (after various international bannings) a 1960 Peter Brook production in Paris and a New York debut at Circle in the Square, which starred Nancy Marchand and Sylvia Miles. While it is interesting as a psychological study and says something about its times, as drama it's lacking. The plot, such as it is, can be summed up very quickly. When a violent revolution deposes the authorities, a group of role-players from a whorehouse-dungeon get drafted to fulfill the functions of the characters they've been play-acting. In this unabridged production the story runs three and a half hours, including an intermission. It is educational, but not edifying to see the fullness of what Genet intended since much of the play, including almost the entire second act, is an incoherent jumble.

    INTRODUCTION
Genet was a member of the controversial and innovative generation of French writers that included Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and Jean Cocteau. The author of several highly acclaimed novels, Genet remains best known for plays in which he utilized the stage as a communal arena for enacting personal fantasies involving sex and death. Genet, whom Cocteau dubbed France's “Black Prince of letters,” is linked to such literary figures as the Marquis de Sade and Charles Baudelaire for his use of rich, baroque imagery, his deliberate inversion of traditional Western moral values, and his belief that spiritual salvation may be attained through the pursuit of evil.
    Biographical Information
Born in Paris December 19, 1910, Genet was abandoned at birth by his mother, a prostitute, to a state orphanage run by the French Assistance Publique. At an early age Genet was sent to a boys' reformatory for stealing. There he embraced the role of convict and devoted himself to crime, subsequently spending much of his youth and young adult life in European prisons for such offenses as theft, smuggling, and male prostitution. While in prison, Genet began to write novels and produced what critics often regard as his finest work in that genre, most prominently

Our Lady of the Flowers by Jean Genet Lori Schreiner Do you know some poison poem that would burst
my cell into a spray of forget-me-nots?
(Genet 201) O ur Lady of the Flowers by Jean Genet is a startling and imaginative book that weaves the stories of two narrators, one an omniscient creator of a fantasy play, the other a prisoner telling the here and now details of his solitary confinement. The book is the journey of these splintered narrators who eventually integrate into one multifaceted, redeemed, narrative voice. Genet sets the scene by describing his dingy cell. On the walls he has pasted with "chewed bread" (65) photos he pilfered from other prisoners, newspaper clippings, and the torn jackets of novels. From this gallery of pictures, he creates the characters of his alternate reality. "At night I love them and my love endows them with life" (65). The reader experiences a bit of whiplash as the here-and-now prisoner continuously reappears in the midst of the daydream, gripped by the stark reality and powerlessness of solitary confinement. I would like to dream them both in many positions if when I closed my eyes, my dream still obeyed my will…But during the day it is disturbed by anxiety about my trial and will end by my being swallowed very very slowly by a giant crocodile formed by the whiffs of the foul prison air. (Genet 138)

Born in Paris, Genet was the illegitimate child of a prostitute. He was caught stealing at the age of ten and by early adolescence had begun to serve a series of sentences, spanning nearly 30 years, for theft and homosexual prostitution. In 1947, following his tenth conviction for theft, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. While he was in prison Genet had been writing and publishing, and his growing literary reputation induced a group of leading French authors to petition for his pardon, which was granted in 1948 by the president of France. Genet's first novel, an autobiographical work about homosexuality and life in the prison underworld, was
