Historical Note
The Third Programme of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) was inaugurated on September 29, 1946, as part of the BBC's post-war restructuring of radio into three networks. Responding to the public's growing interest in the arts, which BBC programs during World War II had helped to foster, the BBC instituted three complementary networks designed not only to inform and entertain, but to educate the public as well: the Home Service, the Light Programme, and the Third Programme. The Home Service provided a broad range of news, educational, and entertainment services and was the principal channel. The Light Programme, as the name implies, offered lighter fare which was intended purely for relaxation and amusement purposes. The Third Programme was more serious in nature and catered to an esoteric audience. Its purpose, as outlined by Sir William Haley, was to present "the great classical repertoire in music and drama, and, so far as they are broadcastable, in literature and the other arts," things "culturally satisfying and significant." The BBC defined the program as "being for the educated rather than an educational programme."

DAVID GASCOYNE
David Emery Gascoyne was born in Harrow, Middlesex on 10th October 1916. The son of a bank manager, Gascoyne was educated at Salisbury cathedral choir school - where he absorbed something of the religiosity that became an aspect of his writing - and the Regent Street Polytechnic. His first work, a collection of poems entitled “Roman Balcony and Other Poems” was published when he was 16, and at 19 he had published his “Short Story of Surrealism”. At 20 he was helping to organise the 1936 London International Surrealist Exhibition. Between 1954 and 1964 David lived in France, after which he returned to the Isle of Wight and lived at his parents’ home in Oxford Street. After his father’s death acute depression dogged him and over the next 11 years he endured further periods in hospital. He met Judy Lewis (n©e Tyler) during one of his hospital stays and they married on 17th May 1975. In 1996 he was made a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture for his lifelong services to French Literature.

Biographical Sketch Born in 1889 to Sir Hugh Barnes and Winifred Strachey Barnes, Mary (Barnes) Hutchinson spent her early childhood in India before being sent to boarding school in England. In 1910 she married a lawyer, St. John Hutchinson, and about the same time her cousin and confidante Lytton Strachey and his friend Duncan Grant introduced her to the Bloomsbury group. Initially shy in the company of this artistic group of people, Hutchinson soon entered into the spirit of Bloomsbury, becoming a generous hostess and patroness. Surrounded by writers as she was, it is perhaps not surprising that she also took to writing, publishing a single volume of short stories and essays
