English poet and dramatist. He is the author of Supposes (1573), a translation of I suppositi Jocasta (1573), a version of the Phoenissae The Glasse of Government The Complaynte of Phylomene (1587). His satire in blank verse, The Steele Glas , appeared in 1576. The Princely Pleasures, at the Courte at Kenelwoorth (1576). He also wrote a prose romance, The Pleasant Fable of Ferdinando Jeronimi (1587), and Dan Bartholomew of Bath (1573), a kind of novelette in verse. His Certayne Notes of Instruction concerning the Making of Verse or Rhyme in English (1575) is said to be the first attempt at a treatise on prosody in the language. He is, however, much more entertaining in undisguised verse narrative of his own experiences, as in The Voyage into Holland (1573) and Dulce Bellum Inexpertis (1575), the latter giving a vivid picture of his experiences in Flanders.

  • George Gascoigne c. 1539-1577
    English poet, playwright, and critic.
    INTRODUCTION
Considered accomplished in several forms, Gascoigne was a major literary pioneer. Scholars generally agree that he wrote the first English prose comedy, the first book of English literary criticism, and the first original English verse satire written on Roman models. Some contend that his most famous work, The Adventures of Master F. J. (1573), is the first English novel. Gascoigne's works are informed by his wide array of experiences, including the study of law, military duty, and service at court. The quality of Gascoigne's works significantly changed over the course of his career, shifting from a cheery idealism to a passionate moralism.
    Biographical Information
The Pleasant Tale of Hemetes the Hermit (1575) and The Grief of Joy (1576)—both of which he presented directly to Queen Elizabeth—were well-received at court. Gascoigne died, following a lengthy illness, on October 7, 1577, in Lincolnshire.

His best-known play, Supposes (1566), was based on I Suppositi (1509) by Ludovico Ariosto, and was the first English adaptation of Italian comedy. Supposes was also the first English prose comedy, and brought the classical comedy of romance, disguise, and mistaken identity to English drama. Shakespeare used Supposes in the plot of The Taming of the Shrew. Gascoigne's poems influenced the work of Edmund Spenser.
