"You must not wonder, though you think it strange"
You must not wonder, though you think it strange,
To see me hold my lowering head so low;
And that mine eyes take no delight to range
About the gleams which on your face do grow.
The mouse which once hath broken out of trap
Is seldom teased with the trustless bait,
But lies aloof for fear of more mishap,
And feedeth still in doubt of deep deceit.
The scorched fly which once hath 'scap'd the flame
Will hardly come to play again with fire.
Whereby I learn that grievous is the game
Which follows fancy dazzled by desire.
So that I wink or else hold down my head,
Because your blazing eyes my bale have bred.

edit Early life
He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge , and on leaving the university is supposed to have joined the Middle Temple . He became a member of Gray's Inn in 1555. He has been identified without much show of evidence with a lawyer named Gastone who was in prison in 1548 under very discreditable circumstances. There is no doubt that his escapades were notorious, and that he was imprisoned for debt. George Whetstone says that Sir John Gascoigne disinherited his son on account of his follies, but by his own account he was obliged to sell his patrimony to pay the debts contracted at court. He was M.P. for Bedford in 1557-1558 and 1558-1559, but when he presented himself in 1572 for election at Midhurst he was refused on the charges of being "a defamed person and noted for manslaughter ," "a common Rymer and a deviser of slaunderous Pasquelles," "a notorious rufilanne," an atheist and constantly in debt.

The Life of George Gascoigne
(c.1539-1578)
by John Butler
1. Biography
Queen Mary I
's last Parliament (1558), according to his biographer Prouty.
John Donne
. He did make some connections, however, and married Elizabeth Breton, a wealthy widow, but even here things began to go wrong. It seems that Elizabeth had already been contracted in marriage to one Edward Boyes (before she met Gascoigne), but that she did not consider the marriage valid. Boyes, unfortunately, disagreed, and took them to court. They were separated, and Elizabeth's goods impounded, but after much legal wrangling they finally won their case.
Supposes
, a translation of Ariosto's I Suppositi (1509), for a carnival at Gray's Inn. Gascoigne, like his father, tried his hand at farming, but he was not very successful and he was not helped by his father's vow to disinherit him nor by his mother's stealing his sheep. His own brothers, also, took actions against him in court for various reasons, and by 1570 Gascoigne had already been in prison for debt. Getting re-elected to Parliament was one way out, because it provided one with immunity, but when Gascoigne tried that tactic in 1571 he was disallowed by the Privy Council as being "a notorious ruffian....an atheist and godless person." There was nothing for it but to join the army, and late in 1571 we find Gascoigne volunteering to serve in the Netherlands under William the Silent.
A Hundreth Sundry Flowres . His biographers mention further catastrophes which made him return to Holland almost immediately, but in any case he was accused of treason, acquitted, but lost most of his personal assets. In a new book

  • When scholars turn to the work of George Gascoigne, they praise his The Pleasant Fable of Ferdinando Jeronimi and Leonora de Valasco as an Elizabethan prose romance that influenced later writers, including Shakespeare. They also discuss his wide-ranging writing skills and his contemporary reputation as a craftsman of the English language that paved the way for later Elizabethans, such as Sidney and Spenser, and, more recently, for a film adaptation of Queen Elizabeth’s early life . While scholars have also noted that Gascoigne, the “chief poet of the young Elizabeth’s court,” participated in summer entertainments for the Queen and that he inaugurated the fashion of making her into a goddess, they have not adequately analyzed his complicated relations to her cult
Son of Catholic Sir John Gascoigne of Cardington, Bedfordshire, schooled at Trinity College, Cambridge, member of Gray’s Inn, and participant in Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, Gascoigne lived a complex and eventful life as a (struggling) gentleman
