Poets Forrest Gander and Stanley Plumly To Read at the Library of Congress
On Thursday evening, March 20, poets Forrest Gander and Stanley Plumly will read from their work in the Mumford Room on the sixth floor of the James Madison Memorial Building. The reading, which is presented under the auspices of the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Poetry and Literature Fund, will begin at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are not required. Forrest Gander grew up in Virginia and holds degrees in both geology and literature. After living in central Mexico, he edited the bilingual anthology Mouth to Mouth: Poems by Twelve Contemporary Mexican Women (1993), for which he also translated poems. His own books include Rush to the Lake (1988), Lynchburg (1993), and Deeds of Utmost Kindness (1994). A new book, Science and Steepleflower, will appear next year from New Directions. In 1988, Mr. Gander received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in poetry, and in 1993, he received a Gertrude Stein Award in Innovative American Poetry. With C.D. Wright, he edits Lost Roads Publishers, a literary book press of more than 40 titles, and keeps a small orchard outside of Providence, Rhode Island. A professor at Providence College, he is teaching this year as a visiting poet in The Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa.

Eliot Weinberger and Forrest Gander
Issue 93 Fall 2005 LITERATURE
Eliot Weinberger. Photo: Nina Subin. Courtesy of the photographer. Like the sage to the king in Kalidasa’s Shakuntala , speaking of the king’s arrow: It should only defend the distressed, Not assail the innocent! In this ancient poem, the poet /sage functions to caution the king against his potential crime. It’s this particular kind of insight that Eliot Weinberger and Forrest Gander bring to the table: they are confounded by the astounding absence of the role of poet as a public cautionary figure. Here the writers/translators/essayists participate in a playful yet often rueful discussion about what is happening right now: where they find themselves politically, what they appreciate about each other’s work and what they think about our current “king’s arrow.” It is clear that the expansive lens of their viewpoints is shared; both are capable of connecting their rhetoric to the poetic. And both are stunned by the waning interest in the U.S. government in understanding the gravity with which its decisions affect and eliminate humanistic endeavors and basic liberties.

Poetry chapbooks are slim volumes, typically publishing a few poems by a single author. Often the text of a chapbook is the first appearance of the poems, and thus constitutes the true first edition of those works. Chapbooks take their name historically from "chapmen" (or " chaps ") in England who popularized the form by selling the booklets on street corners, much in the same way newsboys would sell papers. In the 20th century, chapbooks began to emerge from fine presses-often illustrated or embellished by artists-and frequently are available only in signed limited editions.

Online Edition: Spring 1999 Forrest Gander New Directions Press ($12.95) by Peter Gurnis Take a look at Sally's Mann's haunting photograph on the cover: the surface of water full of light, dark tree-lined banks, branches etched in somber clarity. If we look intently, we lose ourselves, as if staring at something forbidden. The surface has a kind of luminous depthnot just tilting back the light from the sky, but welling up out of the dark. The surface of the water as if a bodyravishing and intense. Sally Mann's photograph gives us a glimpse into what Gander's poems do. At the dog end of the century, when the lyric and the poet's persona seem whittled down impossibly thin, along comes Forrest Gander. His poems are heroic, working on a big canvas with the drive and intensity that I associate with Rothko or Pollock. He has an alert eye that sees more than most of us do, capturing in precise detail the splendor of the world, knowing that only with clarity comes beauty. Each element is momentarily at rest. The intensity, "the rawness of the looking," is not some false stasis, but the vertigo of being in the world. Gander has about him the intensity of the hunter, the savage combination of patience and readiness: alert before the unexpected. The best poems in the collection have rigor, economy, passion, and a fierce eroticism. Look at the end of his "Landscape With a Man Being Killed By a Snake":
