from W.G. Hoskins and H.P.R. Finberg's Devonshire Studies, 1952, (the 'Three Studies in Family History' chapter). TOWARDS the end of John Galsworthy's Swan Song, Such a pilgrimage was made by Galsworthy himself in the autumn of 1912, not to the coast of Dorset but to that of Devon, at Wembury not far from Plymouth, for he was intensely interested in his own origins and descent through a long line of Devon farmers. The Forsyte family tree bears a striking resemblance to his own in each generation of the nineteenth century: headed by Jolyon Forsyte the Dorset farmer, then Jolyon his son, the builder, and then "Old Jolyon," the director of companies, and James the solicitor; and then Soames Forsyte, the solicitor and connoisseur. Galsworthy spent some thirty years pondering over the history of his family. As long ago as 1903 he addressed a query to Devon Notes and Queries which shows that he was even then giving thought to the problem of his Devonian ancestry, for he knew that his grandfather had left Devon for London in the 1830s. He knew too that Devon was his native heath, for in the northwest of the county there is a remote farm called Galsworthy. No other of the thousands of farms in the county bears this name: clearly, this was the very origin of his family. And clearly, too, this interest in his ancestry and in the generations of his family, was one of the main impulses towards the creation of the Forsyte saga. He began to write The Man of Property

The Country House by John Galsworthy
The Forsyte Saga , which I am also reading, so that I had a comparison.
The Country House The Forsyte Saga , it shares one of the themes of the first book of the saga, Man of Property , in that it is about a divorce. Here, it is the main focus of the book and the legal ramifications of divorce, and its effect upon the three people most closely involved, and their wider family circle, is anatomised.
What made me angry while reading this book, perhaps not surprisingly, is the reminder of the injustices perpetrated by our divorce laws until comparatively recently. Helen, who wants a divorce, must dissemble, her lawyer tells Vigil:
Gregory ran his hand through his hair.
Mr Paramor drew his breath between his teeth.
So Helen, who is desperately unhappy with her husband, cannot seek a divorce unless she is able to demonstrate that she is the injured party (and there is a reason, which reflects well on her, why she cannot), but her husband, citing George, can start proceedings.
The Country House unless they have a particular interest in the period. It is, of course, well written (Galsworthy won the Nobel prize for Literature in 1932), but it lacks some of the beauty of structure evident in the Saga, although it was published a year later than

You've felt the pinch o't in your bellies. You've forgotten what the fight 'as been; many times I have told you; I will tell you now this once again. The fight o' the country's body and blood against a blood-sucker. The Forsyte Saga

In that Summer of 1909 the simple souls who even then desired to simplify the English tongue, had, of course, no cognizance of little Jon, or they would have claimed him for a disciple. But one can be too simple in this life, for his real name was Jolyon, and his living father and dead half-brother had usurped of old the other shortenings, Jo and Jolly.
