LECTURER Nóra Séllei TITLE OF COURSE Women and Madness in Literature I. Introduction Locating the content of the course within the discipline The course fits into the academic policy of the Department of British Studies (Institute of English and American Studies) in that in recent years the focus of teaching and research has shifted from literary studies to interdisciplinarity (this is what the change of name from Department of English Literature is a sign of). Within this new interdisciplinary framework gender studies has been a major area of studies, but since this course combines the feminist point of view with postcolonial and discursive theories, it means a new development, and opens further vistas of research (including students’ research work) and of teaching. Locating the course within the curriculum The course has been designed as an essential component of the 3 rd and 4 th -year required optional courses taught at my home Institute under the label Gender Studies and Literature. In this sense, however, it will be a new kind of course, a "topic" course never offered before within this framework, exploring the literary representation of an issue (as opposed to this, the previous courses can rather be defined as "major figure study", "period study" and "genre study"). In this way, it has fit our "cultural studies" course block, and prepares the students for the end-of-the-fourth-year comprehensive exam in British Cultural Studies.

ARCHIVE OF IDAHO FOLKLORE
Papers 1963-1972
7 cubic feet The Archive of Idaho Folklore was donated to the University of Idaho Library by Jan Harold Brunvand in 1965. Professors Bacil Kirtley and Lynn Pugmire added to the collection from 1969 to 1972. The collection was processed by Judith Nielsen in August 1989.
BACKGROUND OF THE ARCHIVE OF IDAHO FOLKLORE
Noted folklorist Jan Harold Brunvand began teaching in the University of Idaho Humanities department in 1961. In 1963 he applied for a University grant to develop an Archive of Idaho Folklore. The project began during the 1963 summer session when the 25 students in American Folklore (English 174) began collecting songs, stories, jokes, rhymes and other similar materials. The project was continued by later classes and completed in December 1964. Between January and June 1965 when Dr. Brunvand left the University he and a student assistant organized the materials collected. Between 1969 and 1972 Professors Bacil Kirtley and Lynn Pugmire taught folklore classes and placed the term papers from those classes with the previous material. Since 1966 Jan Harold Brunvand has been teaching English and Folklore at the University of Utah. He has written ten books and also writes a syndicated newspaper column.
