  • Gallico, Paul 1897–
An American novelist now living in Monaco, Gallico is the author of the "Mrs. Harris" stories, The Snow Goose , and The Poseidon Adventure . (See also Contemporary Authors , Vols. 5-8, rev. ed.) [To] remind us of such as the Titanic and the Andrea Doria, here is Paul Gallico's last log of the S.S. Poseidon [ The Poseidon Adventure ] an old trans-Atlantic leviathan capsized by a stupendous tidal wave. Some 15 souls survive in the upside-down hull—and, led by a muscular evangelist, they begin an arduous climb topside. As they claw their way through the entrails of the doomed liner, Mr. Gallico collects a Grand Hotel full of shipboard dossiers. These interlocking histories may be damp with sentimentality as well as brine—but the author's skill as a storyteller invests them with enough suspense to last the desperate journey. What led you to pick up this book? I found a copy for $1 and waaaay back in the 1970's, I enjoyed the movie. Plus, the cover is a grabber. The poppets were transfixed.
Summarize the plot but don't give away the ending. When a cruise ship and freight hauler is flipped upside-down, a small group of passengers decide that in order to have a chance at survival they must climb to the ship's hull.
What did you like most about the book? The one truly frightening scene - right near the beginning - when the ship is hit by a large wave and turns over.
What did you think of the main character? This particular book had a cast of characters and the author did a lot of what writers call "head-hopping", moving from one character's viewpoint to another. I have to admit that, upon reflection, I didn't truly like any of them.

In 1938, the year I was born, Paul Gallico published his valedictory Farewell to Sport, a thoughtful meditation on the "wildest, maddest, and most glamorous period in all the history of sport," which just happened to coincide with his fourteen years as a New York Daily News sportswriter. Gallico was no mere press-box pundit. Long before the late George Plimpton's showy turns as quarterback,

He swam with Johnny Weismuller, golfed with Bobby Jones, and lasted less than two minutes in the ring with Jack Dempsey.

Brief Review: 'The Snow Goose' by Paul Gallico
    by Arnold Blaise
In 1940, The Saturday Evening Post carried a short story by Paul Gallico (1897-1976), who had begun his career as a sports reporter but who, in 1936, had moved to England and started writing fiction. In 1941, the story was published by Alfred A. Knopf as a slim novella of some fifty pages and was Gallico's first major success as a fiction writer, being reprinted several dozen times in succeeding years. It was also Gallico's only critical success, although he went on to write the hugely popular "Mrs. 'Arris" series, as well as The Poseidon Adventure The Snow Goose was, in Gallico's words, "a once in a lifetime happening for a writer." The story of The Snow Goose is a variation on the ageless myth of a man whose physical deformity prevents most people from seeing his underlying admirable character. It begins in 1930, and is set on the east coast of England. Philip Rhayader, an artist in his late twenties, is a hunchback with a crippled left arm. Rebuffed by society, he retreats to the desolate marshland by the sea, where he lives in an abandoned lighthouse. There he paints the marsh and the wildfowl that inhabit it, and provides a sanctuary for birds over the winter before they migrate north in the spring.

The Truth About Books - Honest Reviews About Real Books EVER BOUGHT A BOOK ON THE STRENGTH OF THE REVIEWS ON THE BACK? If you are like me (and probably one of the many thousands of book lovers across the globe) and have had the misfortune of spending your hard-earned cash on an apparent "best-seller"; you will probably also have experienced the dull thud as you bang your head against the wall, thinking "Why did I listen to the reviews on the back?!" The truth is: reviews found on books are usually self-promoting, PR stunt-type hype and not necessarily a true reflection of the books' quality at all. It is my aim to tell the truth about books, but don't for one second assume that that is synonymous with my creating a blog to 'diss' authors' work - to the contrary - my intention is to provide an honest appraisal of each and every book I read. If the book is any good - it'll get a good review. If it's awful and a tragedy to the literary world - then it won't. It's that simple. Hopefully, I can prevent hard-working, decent people from being conned out of their cash for something that would be better served as bonfire fodder; whilst promoting little-known gems that deserve greater attention.

    The Snow Goose
    Author Info: Paul Gallico
Paul Gallico had a varied and interesting career, but seems doomed to be best remembered for the cheesy movie version of one of his stories: The Poseidon Adventure . As I recall, the book actually wasn't too bad and The Other Brother an d I loved his long-forgotten novel, The Boy Who Invented the Bubble Gun . Gallico had years before been one of the highest paid sportwriters in America, starting the Golden Gloves, blazing a trail for the likes of George Plimpton by boxing a round with Jack Dempsey and catching Dizzy Dean, and he later drew on the experience to write the story that became the basis for the great film, Pride of the Yankees . But he walked away from that success leaving one of the great sports books in his wake, Farewell to Sport in order to take a less lucrative position writing general interest material. When he met with some success he picked up stakes and moved to Britain to focus on writing fiction.
    The Snow Goose
The whole thing has the quality of a fairy-tale and is so well told that we can't help but forgive its sentimentality and the transparency of its familiar message. It's not necessarily great literature, but it's certainly a great short read.
