Instructions to the Double (1976), is a confessional work about synthesizing her past life with her future career as a poet. In 1978 Gallagher published Portable Kisses On Your Own , and Under Stars ; the last volume contains a section based on her 1976 trip to Ireland. Several poems in Willingly (1984) eulogize her late father, and the collections Amplitude (1987) and Moon Crossing Bridge (1992) examine her relationship with her third husband, author Raymond Carver . Her other volumes of verse include Stepping Outside (1974) and The Valentine Elegies (1993). A Dangerous Mission: Tess Gallagher
by Gary Lehmann
It's a dangerous mission. You/could die out there. You /could go on forever.

The act of writing poetry on a regular basis has some very profound outcomes that the writer does not always realize at the beginning of the adventure. A good poem tells a small truthful thing about the world the poet inhabits. A talented, persistent poet writes many such poems and tells many tiny truthful secrets about his or her inner existence. Taken in the main, this process finally develops a poetic voice. Although the poet may write on all kinds of topics and cover any number of poetic techniques, eventually, one central theme or subject matter emerges that dominates that poet's presence in the poetic world. It becomes that poet's public persona. We see this pattern over and over. Robert Frost was not all walks in the woods. He wrote love poems and sad poems. He wrote all sorts of poems, but what we remember of him are poems that seem to have been written while walking in the woods. Mark Doty wrote all sorts of poems and probably thought he had a developed settled persona when his male lover died of AIDS in 1995. Ever since then, he has become the voice of the AIDS crisis in poetry. It will become his toe tag.

The Kiss Takes Confession
by Tess Gallagher
He was a man between two women,
that condition of amplitude guaranteed
to overvalue. He basked quietly
in their desperate spillover
meant to hold him. With honesty
as policy he'd kept each informed
about the other, as if honesty could convert duplicity to some well-meaning by-product of his foamy approximation at consideration. He glimpsed in himself the pride of "character" which he recirculated between them as sauce to himself, an accolade meant to disarm their chief suspicion, that he would have it all, and scant of guilt. The kiss, like a devouring beauty, perched on his knee as he turned the pages of his scrapbook. There stood his young wife, glowing like a lily, translucent in the blue frieze of time, next to their child. She does not know fate will comb her skull with ashes. How radiantly she wears the waxy glow of the candle assaulted by its flame! She was never, he confessed with a sigh, his soul mate, though the years had "coded

WHAT BETTER WAY to introduce tess gallagher than to quote the final stanza of the title poem of her first collection, Instructions to the Double
http://www.wooster.edu/ArtfulDodge/interviews/gallagher.htm
A Conversation With Tess Gallagher WHAT BETTER WAY to introduce Tess Gallagher than to quote the final stanza of the title poem of her first collection, Instructions to the Double: It's a dangerous mission. You
could die out there. You
could go on forever. Reading these lines in my early twenties, when I had first come to poetry, was quite heady stuff. This stanza contained an entire, sprawling manifesto. Poetry as danger; as a way to live; until death do you part. Now, however, twenty years later, I realize Tess Gallagher was not offering a portrait of the writing life-the responsibility of writing-that involves only a young and fiery infatuation, but a commitment that involves a more enduring presence, encompassing decades and relocations from one continent to another-that involves loving and losing others, that includes helping others to bring their own voices forth, and being helped as well. The consequence of Tess Gallagher's commitment to the responsibilities of writing involves more than a long list of books, although these publications are indeed impressive. Her collections of poetry include Instructions to the Double, Under Stars, Willingly, Portable Kisses
