Neil Gaiman has an international following for his dream-haunted fiction, poetry, graphic novels, and media projects. As an Interstitial writer, he has used the comic book form to create compelling literary works for the adult reader. Good Omens (with Terry Pratchett), the comic book series Black Orchid , and a variety of quirky publications such as Now We Are Sick: An Anthology of Nasty Verse He then created his best known work, The Sandman: a brilliant series of dark comic books and graphic novels. These works have attained cult status with adult readers on both sides of the Atlantic (university students in particular), giving Neil the kind of celebrity usually reserved for rock stars, not writers. Sandman #19: A Midsummer Night's Dream (in collaboration with artist Charles Vess ) won the World Fantasy Award in 1991, and is particularly recommended. Neil also edited

Exclusive interview by Daniel Robert Epstein , contributing editor
Neil Gaiman has more things going on right now than you've had hot meals. He recently stuck his whole foot back into the comic book field with the all-encompassing Marvel miniseries , drawn by Andy Kubert. Sandman: Endless Nights is coming out soon, drawn by a myriad of brilliant artists. Wolves in the Walls a new children's book created with Dave McKean that has just been released. And the Neverwhere BBC miniseries is finally hitting DVD. The TV production-turned-novel is now getting the full digital treatment, and Gaiman fans can lose their minds, because he does a commentary track over the entire length of the series. There is also an old Gaiman interview on the DVD in which you can see him with that early '90s haircut. Neverwhere here Neil Gaiman: Daniel, it's lovely to talk to you again. UGO: Thanks Neil, it's always a pleasure. What was it like watching Neverwhere again for the commentary? Neil Gaiman: It was really strange. There is nothing quite as odd as being stuck into a box. An airless, soundless room with a television, headphones, a microphone and being told to free associate. To be honest, it might have been better to do it over a couple of days, but then again, I don't have a couple of days free. By the end of episode six, I was reeling slightly. I just watched 6 hours of television and I was still talking. It was lovely, though. I'd forgotten so many specifics, how much I enjoyed the behind the scenes filming experience and the weird anecdotal bits. Also, how good some of the performances were, and on the other hand, some of the frustrations.

Neil Gaiman: How To Talk To Girls At Parties
A friend had told Vic about a party, and Vic was determined to go whether I liked it or not, and I didn't. But my parents were away that week at a conference, and I was Vic's guest at his house, so I was trailing along beside him. They're just girls," said Vic. "They don't come from another planet."

The Sandman, conceived by Neil Gaiman for a series of graphic novels published by Vertigo Comics, began life in December, 1988. An amazingly eclectic mix of ideas, imagery and social commentary, this mature comic book character has received critical acclaim not only in the comics community, but also in the mainstream. The Sandman successfully raised the bar for what should come to be expected from comics and helped change views on comics as an art medium. Person One: Do you read comics? Deconstructing Gaiman
Weird Tales . Neil Gaiman calls The Neil Gaiman Reader "Essays on things I've written, by a dozen different very smart people."
The meaning of a writer's work is often amorphous, confusing, or conflicting - even to the writer themselves. Good works leave us wondering, discussing, and dissecting; great works leave questions to answer long after the story is published.
The questions are as often about the writer, or about ourselves, as they are about the story itself. In

By Cindy White uthor Neil Gaiman often writes about other realms and the permeable boundaries between them. Appropriately, the writer of the celebrated Sandman comic-book series and the award-winning novel American Gods is about to enter into a new realm himself, that mystical place known as Hollywood. Gaiman recently announced a deal with New Line Cinema to adapt his comic-book miniseries Death: The High Cost of Living into a feature film, which he also plans to direct. This year will also see the release of the fantasy film MirrorMask , which Gaiman wrote with visionary artist-turned-director Dave McKean. For anyone else, moving into a new medium might seem like a daunting undertaking. Not for Gaiman, who is always eager for a new challenge. Science Fiction Weekly recently spoke with the talented and prolific author about these and other recent endeavors.

Phantastik-Couch : How do you like Germany? Neil Gaiman Phantastik-Couch Neil Gaiman : No, I like Germany. There is always this national thing with all the local coloring, for instance going out in Cologne for dinner and being served a sausage bigger than my head. It amuses me enormously. Phantastik-Couch : What about your German fans? Anything special about them? Neil Gaiman : The flipside of this is that the readers don't really change from country to country. You can go to England, America or Germany, take photographs of the readers in line for the signing and you say, ok, which is which? They are the same readers, the same people, very often they even look the same. Not too many beardy ones, but there are certainly types. Like the cute curvy girl, the tall intense young man. These days in America I'm getting more and more middle aged ladies. Phantastik-Couch : Where do they come from?
