Neil Gaiman may be the Shakespeare of comics. Not that he's as good as Shakespeare, necessarily, but he may end up having a similar kind of impact. Before Shakespeare, plays were not really considered literature. They were regarded by the literary establishment of the time about the same way today's academics regard, say, television sitcoms. Or comic books. During his life, William Shakespeare's reputation as a poet lay primarily on his sonnets, which today are considered pretty good but not as great as his plays. It was only after he died that his very popular plays began being taken seriously as literature. It is largely because of Shakespeare that dramatists are accorded high honors in the field of letters. Ironically, Ben Jonson, who was thought of as a superior poet during Shakespeare's day, is now primarily remembered as one of the "other playwrights" of the English Renaissance.
Gaiman has gotten more attention from the mainstream press than anybody but Art Spiegelman, and while articles about MAUS tend to treat it as a unique object, articles about Gaiman usually mention other "new voices" in comics, and point out that his major work, SANDMAN, is by no means his only contribution to the field. Some might argue that Gaiman is undeserving of such attention, that this or that favorite writer, artist or writer/artist should be hailed as the greatest, should be getting the attention. One of my English teachers thought Christopher Marlowe was twice the writer Shakespeare was, but whose name is synonymous with literary greatness?

Interviewed by Tasha Robinson September 28th, 2005 Even before his groundbreaking comics series The Sandman made him a cult superstar, writer Neil Gaiman had made a name in comics, working alongside artist Dave McKean to create books like Violent Cases Signal To Noise , and Black Orchid . Over the past two decades, Gaiman and McKean have been frequent partners, collaborating on children's books and graphic novels, though Gaiman has also had a lively career on his own, writing books and short stories, directing the aptly named A Short Film About John Bolton , and screenwriting for television (the Neverwhere miniseries) and film (the English adaptation of Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke and the upcoming Robert Zemeckis film Beowulf Gaiman and McKean's latest collaboration, the sumptuous fantasy film

And it almost always winds up more than paying for itself. Whenever I do things for the money, not only does it prove a headache and a pain in the neck and come with all sorts of awful things attached, but I normally don't wind up getting the money, either. So, after a while, you do sort of start to learn [to] just forget about the things where people come to you and dangle huge wads of cash in front of you. Go for the one that seems interesting because, even if it all falls apart, you've got something interesting out of it." There's a boyishness about Neil Gaiman that makes you doubt the 40 years he claims. A bad boyishness, complete with a mop of unruly dark hair and on the day I met with him a black leather jacket. He wears sunglasses the whole time we speak: modishly pale ones that only just mask the intense green of his eyes. He is, he tells me at one point, the father of three: an 18-year-old, a 16-year-old and a seven-year-old. And so 40 makes more sense but, even so, you wonder at the magic he's woven to maintain his youthful mien. On the other hand, consider the work: the fantastic worlds he's created that surely require the outlook of someone who sees a universe filled with wonder everywhere he looks. And there are compensations for 40. For one thing, he is the author of an impressive body of work, the seminal

A Conversation With Neil Gaiman
By Claire E. White Bestselling novelist Neil Gaiman has not exactly had the normal author's experience. For one thing, his fans treat him more like a rock star than an author, lining up hours before a signing or reading appearance. Media handlers hand out numbers to the hundreds of fans who have been known to faint upon meeting him. Gaiman modestly attributes the fainting to the rigors of standing in line for hours, but the more likely explanation for the passion he seems to inspire lies in his dark good looks, mesmerizing voice, trademark wit, and brilliant writing. The rock star connection is also easy to make when you hear his good friend Tori Amos singing about him on her albums Little Earthquakes Under the Pink and Boys for Pele Gaiman was born in 1960 in Portchester, England. An avid reader, he knew early on that writing was the way he wanted to make a living. After stints as a journalist and freelance writer (his work appearing in

The Proposal, c/o Neil Gaiman
Posted by Jason on Nov 26, '07 3:53 PM for everyone Oh dear. Where do I begin? The timeline here will be slightly disjointed, so please do bear with me if I hop back and forth in my storytelling. It's been a thoroughly exhausting week and I haven't fully recovered from all this pleasant madness.
2007 Philippine Ad Congress, Day 02 - Neil's opening remarks:
I can vaguely recall Neil saying something about creativity, storytelling, and always asking, "What If?" because it's from this "What If?" that we generate ideas and come up with stories. This was directly related to much of his writing, including his most current masterpiece-in-the-making, The Graveyard Book . In it, he answered the question, "What if a real baby could be raised in a graveyard...by dead people?"
*He read the first chapter of the book at the signing event - it's rather good.
So I think it's apt that I label what I did as my "What If?” moment. Because, to propose to my lovely girlfriend Maui, I asked the following:

Enter the weird and wonderful world of Neil Gaiman with FRAGILE THINGS Let us tell you stories of the months of the year, of ghosts and heartbreak, of dread and desire. Let me tell you of after-hours drinking and unanswered phones, of good deeds and bad days, of breaking down and making up, of dead men walking and missing fathers, of little French ladies in Miami, of trusting wolves and how to talk to girls. There are stories within stories, whispered in ears in the quiet of the night, hollered above the roar of the day, and played out between lovers and enemies, strangers and friends. But all, all are fragile things made up using just 26 letters arranged and rearranged again and again to form tales and imaginings which, if you let them, will dazzle your senses, haunt your imagination and move you to the very depths of your soul.

First Look at Neil Gaiman's 'Coraline' Posted Dec 26th 2007 11:02AM by Jessica Barnes
Filed under: Animation Focus Features Family Films Movie Marketing ... Trailers and Clips One thing that has always impressed me about the work of Neil Gaiman even though the man writes fairy tales, he never sugar-coats it for the kids. Case in point: the author is now hosting a clip from the upcoming adaptation of Coraline on his personal web site, and it can probably be summed up in one word creepy. Based on Gaiman's Hugo award winning novella , the story focuses on a young girl who discovers an alternate world with very twisted versions of her home and family for starters they all have buttons sewn over their eyes. The young heroine is then charged with rescuing her family and freeing the souls of trapped children from the clutches of the "other mother."
Coraline stars the voice talents of Dakota Fanning , Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French (or as I like to call them: one of the funniest comedy duos of all time), and Teri Hatcher (

When I thought of having Neil Gaiman visit LitPark, I wondered, What of Neil hasn't already been covered? I could say something about his storytelling, naturally, or how he's the one author who lives on both my bookshelf and Mr. Henderson's. I could say something about the characters he writes, like Dearly and The Runt, who sort of crawl into my brain and live there even after their stories end. But people write these things about Neil Gaiman all the time.
So I thought, When I talk to other people about Neil Gaiman, where does the conversation tend to go? Easy. In the end, I don't tend to tell people the very private and permanent ways his writing takes hold of me. I tend to talk about his hair. Neil was such a good sport about this. Ready? A Photo History of Neil Gaiman's Hair.
In Sussex, aged about 22 months. Waiting for my sister to be born. Such a neat child (although I've probably been dressed by my grandmother). You pushed the roundabout around until it went fast and then you jumped on. Or you tripped and were pulled around, face-down, skinning your knees. As I write this now, it occurs to me that the peculiarity of most things we think of as fragile is how tough they truly are. There were tricks we did with eggs, as children, to show how they were, in reality, tiny load-bearing marble halls; while the beat of the wings of a butterfly in the right place, we are told, can create a hurricane across an ocean. Hearts may break, but hearts are the toughest of muscles, able to pump for a lifetime, seventy times a minute, and scarcely falter along the way. Even dreams, the most delicate and intangible of things, can prove remarkably difficult to kill.- from the introduction to
