  • William Gaddis A Frolic of His Own
Award: National Book Award for Fiction Born in 1922, Gaddis is an American novelist. For further information on his life and works, see CLC , Volumes 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 19, and 43.
    INTRODUCTION
Emphasizing litigiousness and greed as characteristics of contemporary American society, A Frolic of His Own (1994) focuses on Oliver Crease, his family, his friends, and the various lawsuits in which they are all enmeshed. Employing elements of humor and farce, Gaddis exhaustively details the absurdities of his characters' suits and subsequent countersuits. For example, Oliver is plaintiff in a plagiarism case he has brought against Constantine Kiester, a top Hollywood producer whose real name is Jonathan Livingston Siegal. Oliver is also, paradoxically, plaintiff and defendant in a suit concerning a hit-and-run accident in which he was hit by his own car—a Sosumi ("so sue me"). Taking its title from a British legal phrase used to describe an employee's actions which, though they resulted in on-the-job injuries, do not entitle the employee to compensation, A Frolic of His Own is largely noted for its satire of justice and law in contemporary American society and for its unusual narrative structure. Except for the inclusion of excerpts from Oliver's writings, legal documents, and trial transcripts, the novel is told primarily through dialogue that is unattributed and only lightly punctuated. Critics have praised Gaddis's realistic depiction of everyday speech—complete with pauses, interruptions, and unfinished thoughts—and stressed the difficulty such a narrative technique, reminiscent of stream-of-consciousness writing, places on readers. Steven Moore observed: "

    Biographical Note
William Thomas Gaddis, Jr. was born on December 29, 1922 in Manhattan and raised in Massepequa (Long Island), by his parents, Edith and William Thomas Gaddis, Sr. His father left the family when he was three years old. Two years later, Edith sent her only child to Merricourt Boarding School in Berlin, Connecticut. Gaddis continued in private school until the eighth grade, after which he returned to Long Island to receive his diploma at Farmingdale High School in 1941. Gaddis entered Harvard University on scholarship in the fall of 1941, where he continued until an illness forced him to take a medical leave of absence. After being reinstated at Harvard in the fall of 1942, Gaddis majored in English. By the fall of 1943, Gaddis had joined the staff of the Harvard Lampoon, where he would eventually serve as President. After leaving Harvard without a degree in 1945, Gaddis moved to Greenwich Village. During this time, he worked at the

An Interview with William Gaddis By John Kuehl and Steven Moore
Q: There seems to be a noticeable undercurrent of autobiography in your fiction. Both Willie in "The Recognitions" and especially Thomas Eigen in "J R" bear more than a passing resemblance to their author. Yet you are also one of the most reticent of writers, avoiding publicity of any kind. What are your views on the place of autobiography in artistic creation and to what extent is Thomas Eigen a portrait of the artist? Q: You said that you enjoy writing, but you have never discussed your writing habits. Do you keep a journal or notebooks? Do you have preferences as to when and where you work, etc? WG: Have I said I enjoy writing? Some high moment and I probably did, but it's nearer what Pascal, was it he? as I have it at second hand, said about no man differing more from another than he does from himself at another time. That incidentally may better explain a phenomenon like "The Brothers Karamazov." It certainly helps to explain my distaste for interviews, though this one may serve to set the record straight on a few points. Q: It's been said "The Recognitions" was edited down to its present size from a much longer manuscript. Is it true that you fundamentally agreed with the cuts suggested by your editors at Harcourt, Brace and World? How did the abandoned material differ from that in the final version? Have you come to regret any of the deletions? Did "J R" go through a similar process of editing? What part do revisions play in your compositional method?

REMEMBERING WILLIAM GADDIS, Neglected Master The best way to remember this uncompromising, darkly funny giant of American letters is to read him. BY CARTER SCHOLZ W illiam Gaddis was esteemed by his peers like few other contemporary novelists, but his audience never matched his reputation. He wrote just four novels, but they are of such density, variety and accomplishment as to dwarf lengthier bibliographies. Each is an artifice of uncommon structural and moral integrity. Gaddis, winner of the National Book Award in 1976 and again in 1994 and the recipient of a MacArthur fellowship in 1982, died Wednesday at his home in East Hampton, N.Y. He was 75. Deeply concerned with the values by which people live, Gaddis filled his work with fierce anger and bitter humor at how people fail themselves and others, at all forms of laziness and greed and stupidity. His books overflow with bleak sorrow, outrage and a desperate laughter that provides the only refuge in a world where most people spend their best efforts on tasks not worth doing.

    Recognizing a Masterpiece:
William Gaddis's Reinterpretation of Flemish Art by Ted Morrissey The Recognitions The Recognitions is considered a forebear of the postmodern novels of DeLillo, Pynchon, Mailer, Wallace and others (Beer 69; Swann 101). Therefore, what Gaddis was to American fiction, Flemish painter Jan van Eyck was to European painting, taking it from the medieval world to the modern. The comparison between Gaddis and van Eyck is a natural one, considering that the fifteenth-century Flemish masters have such a significant role in The Recognitions plot Others have documented connections between The Recognitions and the Flemish painters. Most notably, Brian Stonehill deals primarily with structural issues in The Self-Conscious Novel: Artiface in Fiction from Joyce to Pynchon The Recognitons St. John Altarpiece Masterworks Similarly, Gaddis abandons temporal unity in The Recognitions Death of the Virgin Not only is the overall structure of The Recognitions The Recognitions The Recognitions Color was a crucial element of composition for the Flemish painters. In fact, the proper use of color was one of the main concerns of the guilds. Application of the colors was a painstaking procedure that left nothing to chance: "When the monochrome was completed, a coat of flesh color in an oil medium was laid over it. Over this flesh tint the colors were spread thinly in a shining coat, and the details were drawn in with white. Other films of oil followed the first [. . . . The painter] understood the peculiarities of this material, for he directed that each color should be arranged with certainty and put in its place to avoid later changes" (van der Elst 39).

The Pleasures of the Difficult Jonathan Baumbach In the distorting light of immediate impression, one's own period tends to seem more extreme than any other, our deficiencies more egregious. This literary moment's persuasive illusion is that fewer works that challenge the reader's skills are being read. The reasons may be beside the point, though they are everywhere apparent. Impatience seems high on the list. We want immediate payoffs for our commitments of time and concentration. Fiction, suggests the evidence, tends to be used more and more as a licit form of drug abuse. The difficult in fiction has a variety of faces. There are opaque surfaces, obscure diction, work that is challenging conceptually. There are also fictions that appear simple that are deceptively elusive. Difficult fiction is not, as has been assumed, less emotionally compelling than readily accessible work. The fiction I'm talking about tends to resist easy manipulation, does not wear its emotional life on its sleeve. It's arguable, of course, but I'm not alone in thinking that the most original fiction in America of the last three decades comes by and large from the difficult writers on the postmodernists panel at Brown ten years ago.
