Jostein Gaarder b. 1952 Oslo, Norway A former philosophy teacher whose best-known novel, Sophie's World, was a surprise international best-seller, Jostein Gaarder is one of the most popular of contemporary Scandinavian authors. With over 20 million copies of Sophie in print and with an entire industry having sprung up around that one book there's a movie, a musical, a boardgame, even a CD-ROM based on the book he is presumably also one of the wealthiest. What's so deucedly odd about this is that Gaarder's books usually mix in a hefty dose of philosophical pedagogy along with the story. Sophie's World is subtitled A Novel about the History of Philosophy and the book often seems closer to being a primer on western philosophical thought than a novel so much so that it has become a popular textbook for undergraduate philosophy courses. This hardly seems consistent with "popular" fiction. Also unusual is that Gaarder often writes his stories from the viewpoint of an adolescent: Sophie Amundsen is 14; Hans Thomas (protagonist of The Solitaire Mystery ) is just 12. Originally published in Norway in 1991, the book established its international fame in Germany, where it climbed to the top of Der Spiegel Sophie was expected in British bookstores in January 1995, and rights had been sold to publishers in most European countries as well as in Turkey, Israel, Japan, South Korea, China, and Brazil. His parents' occupations presaged his own interests in teaching and writing his father was a headmaster and his mother a teacher and author of children's books. Gaarder attended the Oslo Katerdralskole and the University of Oslo, where he studied Scandinavian languages and theology. Following his 1974 marriage, Gaarder began to write, contributing to several textbooks on philosophy and theology. His family moved to Bergen in 1981, where he began to teach high school philosophy, a post he held for several years. His first fiction book, Diagnosen og andre noveller (The Diagnosis and Other Stories) was published in 1986. Two books for children followed, Barna fra Sukhavati (The Children from Sukhavati, 1987) and Froskeslottet (The Frog Castle, 1988) before the publication of Kabalmysteriet (The Solitaire Mystery) in 1990. At the time, I read it myself, but decided to hold off reading it to the kids. The Christmas Mystery is a charming little story, told through an advent calendar, of a girl (Elisabet) who chases a lamb through a department store and across country. On her travels, she meets various figures from the nativity scene and discovers that they are all travelling across time to Bethlehem and the birth of Christ. The story is told via a little boy, who is given the Advent calendar by an old shopkeeper and told that it is a magic calendar. When Joachim opens the first door on the calendar, a piece of paper falls out and he discovers the story of Elisabet, and each day her journey unfolds and her meetings with new members of the Nativity.
