Transatlantic Howl! A Dedication to Allen Ginsberg 14 October 2004 In this history-making transatlantic poetic happening, celebrating Allen Ginsberg and his epic poem HOWL, poets performed at venues in London, Paris, and across the United States. These live poetry readings and poetic theatre pieces were simultaneously streamed across JANET, Renater, and Internet2 advanced networks. Streaming video and audio allowed audiences at each site to not only observe readings on location, but to experience the art of poetry in remote theaters as well. While Transatlantic Howl! A Dedication to Allen Ginsberg was streamed, anyone from Calcutta to Caracas with broadband access was able to watch the entire poetry reading as it happened. Abstract
Biography
Charles Kegel Bernstein was born on April 4, 1950, in New York City. As a student at the Bronx High School of Science, Bernstein edited and wrote for the school newspaper, SCIENCE SURVEY, and was active in his synogogue's youth group. Before entering Harvard University in 1968, Bernstein met visual artist Susan Bee, whom he would later marry and with whom he occasionally collaborates. During his years at Harvard University, Bernstein studied philosophy with Stanley Cavell and wrote his final thesis on Gertrude Stein and Ludwig Wittgenstein, portions of which were later published. After receiving his A.B. in 1972, Bernstein and Bee moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, and then the following year to Santa Barbara where he worked part-time as a community health education coordinator. In 1974, the two moved back to New York City. Over the next ten years, as Bernstein became an established poet, he earned his income by editing and writing for medical and healthcare publications. During this time, Bernstein was very active in the experimental poetry scenes of New York, San Francisco and Toronto, not only as a poet, but also as an editor and publisher. Bernstein and Bee started Asylum's Press, which brought out some of their collaborations as well as the works of other poets who are now well-known. In New York, he met Bruce Andrews, with whom he founded and co-edited the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E Journal, the name also given to the loosely connected group of experimental writers with whom Bernstein has been most closely associated. In conjunction with the magazine, Bernstein co-founded Segue Distribution service, which made small press publications more accessible to readers.

Heading down to the wire, and there was a nice write up in KL’s newspaper The Star today about our exhibition, which you can see at
I like that they say the show is full of “mind boggling works,” which I think from a certain perspective is true. The article doesn’t do a great job of describing my work, but glad that it is mentioned anyway. The odd thing to me, in terms of media presentation is that the printed article in the newspaper actually contains twice as many images as the online version—which seems strange and may be an indication that server space isn’t as copious here as it is elsewhere? Amy and I were planning to take our work down mid-day on Saturday (since we’re leaving first thing Monday morning), but tonight the organizer called us and said that he really wants us to keep it all up until Sunday because he has received 100+ phone calls since the article appeared, people telling him they’re going to come on the weekend. So it looks like I’ll run in on Sunday afternoon and take it all down… I haven’t yet had a dull moment here in Malaysia, and it doesn’t look like I will…
