Diverse Thoughts
All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten July 21, 2007 Most of what I really need to know  about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten.  Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate-school mountain, but there in the sandpile at Sunday School.  These are the things I learned: Share everything. Play fair. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together. Be aware of wonder. Posted in Kindergarten Robert Fulghum

Robert Fulghum's New Book Supports Habitat AMERICUS, Ga. Robert Fulghum, one of America's most popular authors has teamed up with one of this countries best known nonprofits, Habitat for Humanity International. Fulghum's latest book, TRUE LOVE (HarperCollins:February 14, 1997) is a compilation of stories told to and by him which relate to the mystery, confusion, elation and pain associated with the incredible experience of love. Fulghum has gone beyond writing about love, and decided to celebrate the spirit of true love by donating all net royalties from the sale of the book to Habitat for Humanity for its work. In the introduction Fulghum writes, "To Habitat for Humanity, founded on the principle that the ultimate grace is found in the simple admonition, 'Love one another.'" About choosing Habitat for Humanity as his beneficiary, Fulghum states, "It is one of the two or three charitable organizations I most respect. I especially admire former President Jimmy Carter's role with Habitat." On writing his latest book, True Love, Fulghum found people were much more willing to tell their most personal stories when they found out the royalties were going to such a charitable organization.

An Interview With Robert Fulghum, Author of What Have I Done?
News Type: Opinion sbutki-interview fulghum Scott (Scoop) Butki You may not recognize the name Robert Fulghum but you have seen his work. He is the author of seven best-selling books All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, It Was on Fire When I Lay Down on It, Uh-Oh, Maybe (Maybe Not), From Beginning to End—The Rituals of Our Lives, True Love and Words I Wish I Wrote. There are currently more than 16 million copies of his books in print, published in 27 languages in 103 countries. But it’s that first book – and the title essay – which you have most likely seen around. At least once a month I see on an office wall the poster with that essay on it. Fulghum is a wise man who says brilliant things in a concise way, often using charming, witty anecdotes. When I learned that we have similar spiritual beliefs and that he has a new book coming out of essays I jumped at the chance to interview him. He agreed to the interview to promote his new book, What On Earth Have I Done? which comes out September 18.

Robert Fulghum Robert Fulghum found his way onto the refrigerator doors of millions of people with his first published essay, "All I Really Need to Know I Leaned in Kindergarten." Since that time, dozens of his humorous, insightful essays have been published and well-received. Having worked as a singing cowboy, an IBM salesman, a painter, symphony conductor and Unitarian minister, Fulghum has an enormous wealth of colorful experience to draw upon in his writings. All I Really Need All I Really Need to Know I Leaned in Kindergarten ( review or buy began as Robert Fulghum’s attempt to write a simple credo. In his capacity as a Unitarian minister, he shared his statement of belief with his congregation, then read it at a primary school celebration. As fate would have it, Senator Dan Evans was in the audience. The speech made it back to Washington, D.C., where it was entered into the Congressional Record. Since then, Mr. Fulghum’s essays have brought smiles and warm insights to millions of people.

December 12, 2007 by DM Though the formal study of music was not part of my education or family life, I have always wished otherwise- always yearned to speak the language and know the customs that would give me a passport to that land across the boarder separating an audience from the stage.      How I have wished to be able to play or even conduct- to be part of the orchestra, somehow, and not forever confined to a seat in the audience!      In All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten,      About a year after the publication of Kindergarten,   I received an astonishing call from the representative of the Minneapolis Chamber Symphony.  The fantasy in my book  had been noted.  Would I be interested in conducting at least the final movement of the Ninth?  My presence would give them some useful pubic attention, and I could fulfill my dream.  How about it?       I assumed they knew what they were doing, or they would not have asked.  They assumed I knew what I was doing, or I would not have written knowledgeably about Beethoven.       As for Beethoven and his Ninth Symphony, I had read the available literature and attended life performances of the piece.  On many occasions I had conducted it- while standing alone in my living room.  Of course I could do this.

Robert Fulghum’s collection of reflective essays, UH-OH, subtitled “Some Observations from Both Sides of the Refrigerator Door,” details the attitude of the good sport, the “willing to try again” personality, and the unabashed optimist. Filled with such personal revelations as Fulghum’s admiration for the sixteenth century French essayist Michel Montaigne, his pleasure in sleeping against his wife like nested spoons, and his allegiance to Unitarianism, the essays skip hopscotch-fashion over a melange of subjects. Like a minister seeking just the right homely focus to introduce a weighty sermon, Fulghum uses unassuming openers—such as meatloaf, the Salvation Smarmy Band, hiccups, and a neighbor who dances to Aretha Franklin’s R-E-S-P-E-C-T—on which to build his pronouncements about life, love, and just getting along. In the lead essay, from which the book takes its title, Fulghum characterizes the spunk of people who refuse to let minor catastrophes disturb their equilibrium. Such people, he notes, set forth like the Hudson Bay Company, accepting risks as part of the territory. Unlike Cinderella, who merely waits for some prince to appear at her door with a glass slipper of the appropriate size, risk-takers move into the line of fire.
