Carlos Fuentes on Bush: "The worst president"
14:50 H Colombia Literature Mexico ... Politics Mexican author Carlos Fuentes , on hand in Colombia to help his buddy Gabriel Garcia Marquez celebrate his homage at the International Spanish Language Congress in Cartagena de Indias, had a few things to say about the need for U.S. politicians to speak Spanish, and about our current president "He is the worst president of that country that I've seen in my lifetime . I'm willing to forgive Ronald Reagan and Nixon , because he is so atrocious and does so much harm that I have never seen anything comparable in terms of stupidity, arrogance and ignorance . This has been a catostrophic presidency and is still causing very dangerous situations in the world," said the author. Fuentes expounded on the topic of the use of Spanish for political gain, and Bush's slaughter of la lengua de Cervantes The author of "Terra nostra" thinks it's "revolutionary" that in the U.S. there are 45 million Spanish speakers, and that before U.S. politicians "refused to speak Spanish" and now "it's somethign to be proud of and a political necessity."

Prominent Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes to speak By Caroline Broome Sept. 28, 2005 Influential Mexican literary and political figure Carlos Fuentes will deliver the Association of Latin American Students Lecture for Washington University's Assembly Series at 11 a.m. on Oct. 12. in Graham Chapel. His talk, which is free and open to the public, is titled "Celebrating Cervantes and Don Quixote." Fuentes is a prolific writer known for his cultural, political and historical insights on Latin America. Much of his writing addresses the search for cultural identity and the examination of cultural tensions both within Latin America and with the U.S. Among his major works are Where the Air is Clearer The Death of Artemio Cruz A Change of Skin Terra Nostra The Hydra Head The Campaign (1990) and Inez (2002). His novel, T he Old Gringo was the first U.S. bestseller by a Mexican author and was made into a film starring Jane Fonda and Gregory Peck. His latest novel is

The following was originally published in daily newspaper in Madrid.
A victim of Pinochet
by Carlos Fuentes [translator's notes in brackets] I remember a showing back in the late 50s of the great Alain Resnais film Night and Fog, From there, the symbolic importance of the figure of Anne Frank as a victim of Nazi crimes. From there, the force with which William Styron's imagination brought to life the horror of Auschwitz in the figure of his protagonist, Sophie, the Polish mother forced by a Nazi commandant to choose only one of her children to live if she wanted to keep both of them from being killed [in his novel, Sophie's Choice] . Styron, in so doing, reminded us that among the victims of Nazi horror were not only Jews but Catholics, communists, homosexuals, and gypsies. I have thought about this inevitable relationship between the number of victims and their incarnation in one individual now that the House of Lords is returning to judge the fate of the brutal Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. Some 4000 deaths, disappearances, tortures, and arbitrary imprisonments are attributed to him. At least half of all Chileans know the name of a victim close to them. Pinochet's terror was no abstraction. I want to remember a man of outstanding intellect, political ability, and sensitivity, whose sacrifice not only incarnates the guilt of Pinochet, the tyrant within Chilean borders, but the international guilt of those who brought him to power: President Richard Nixon and his cronies in the US government in 1973.

The Eagle's Throne by Carlos Fuentes
      Reviewed by R. J. Burgess

The Eagle's Throne being a political satire, in translation, by one of Mexico's most famous writers, Carlos Fuentes. But you'd be wrong. Fuentes weaves a brilliantly worked story that surprises and delights for most of its length. Stuffed full of political truisms and a whole gamut of references from art and philosophy to back up its statements, The Eagle's Throne is one of those rare beasts: a satire that actually transcends national politics and approaches its subject at a level that can be appreciated by anyone. The year is 2020 and Mexico, in retaliation for a war in Columbia, has demanded that America withdraw its troops and increase the price it pays for Mexican oil. America has responded by severing the country's communications network, crucial components of which are based in Miami, with the result that Mexico is suddenly without phone, fax, or email and must rely solely on letters as the only means of effective communication until the current crisis is resolved. In the midst of this, the Mexican elections are looming and many people are starting to question who the right candidate is to get Mexico out of the crisis and restore the public's faith in the government. Outside the main core of characters, the people we meet are all very much political stereotypes: type-cast cloak and dagger villains who skulk around in the periphery of the novel forming shady alliances with one another as they vie for power. The exception is Nicolas Valdivia, perhaps the closest thing to a main character in

The Years With Carlos Fuentes
The Author Revisits Mexico's And His Own Past
BY DAVID GARZA
"It's curious that when you meet old friends in Mexico, it is usually at funerals," Fuentes remarks Austin Chronicle: In your new novel, you have this line which states "art does not reflect reality, it establishes it." In your view, what sort of historical truth does this novel establish? Carlos Fuentes: You're asking me two different questions, at least. Let me start with the last question. One is that history is an unending process. And if you consign the past to the past only, you are consigning it to a museum. One of the great functions of the novel has been to make the past a living present. To give history the dimension that history books lack. I can read all the history books I want about Russia in the 19th century, yet I will not understand Russia in the 19th century if I do not read Gogol and Dostoevsky and Tolstoy and Turgenev, for example. So there is that dimension of maintaining history alive. Then the relation with reality reality is sufficient unto itself. There it is! It doesn't ask writers to come and write about it. What a writer does is to create another reality, to add to reality. Not merely to reflect reality, but to add something to reality that is not there. Hamlet was not there if Shakespeare had not written him. Don Quixote would not be there if Cervantes had not written him. And we can not imagine a world without Hamlet or Don Quixote. Yet they were not in reality. If the writers had not come around and written them, well, no Hamlet and no Don Quixote. So this is an addition to reality, it enriches reality, it creates a new or further reality, if you prefer.
