He's touring the continent, discussing his new work, The Buried Mirror: Reflections on Spain and the New World (Houghton Mifflin, $35). Having also written the television series to accompany it, the writer has set out on a passionate search for his own heritage. Travails with Time: An Interview with Carlos Fuentes By Debra A. Castillo
DEBRA CASTILLO: All the critics that have spoken about your work have noted its diversity of style and genre. In Distant Relations , one of the characters says, "The art of narration is a desperate attempt to reestablish analogy without sacrificing differentiation." How does that relate to your sense of your work? CARLOS FUENTES: It relates to its very source, which is Cervantes, of course. I'm really paraphrasing my own idea of Don Quixote and why I think that it is the founding novel of the modern world. I think Don Quixote comes out of the medieval world, the world of chivalry he evokes and reads about and tries to enact, the world of the Middle Ages, which is basically a world of analogy, where everything has a meaning. All words have a precise meaning, a precise function, and all things have a precise place. This order is established by means of analogy on a scale that leads to God. Don Quixote goes out into a world where this is shattered; his search for analogy leads him into a world of proliferating differentiation. The wayside inns, the people he meets, Maritomes, the dukes, and, what is most important of all, the readers of Don Quixote he encounters tell him, "Your world doesn't exist anymore. Your world of unity and analogy is shattered. We offer you this world of infinite diversity." Don Quixote is a great hero of fiction and of philosophyI think of

Huntington and the Mask of Racism Mexico City Do Mexicans exploit the US? According to Huntington, Mexicans constitute an unjust burden for the US economy: they receive more than they give back. On another level, the Hispanic migrant, as Gregory Rodriguez, from Pepperdine University, tells us, has the highest number of salaried individuals per family than any other ethnic group. So, too, is his level of family cohesiveness. The result is that, while the father of the family may have arrived barefoot and soaking wet, the descendents of migrants have attained income levels comparable to those of Asian and Caucasian laborers. By the second and third generation, 55 percent of Hispanic households are owners of their own homes, compared to 71 percent of white households and 44 percent of black households. Do we Hispanics exploit or contribute, Mr. Huntington? No. Only the Mexicans and the Hispanics, in general, are separatists. These people have conspired to create a separate Hispanic American nation, the soldiers of a re-conquest of the territories lost in the Mexican-American War of 1848. If we were to turn the page over, we would find English to be the most spoken Western language. Does Huntington ever think that this fact reveals to all a silent North American invasion of the entire world? Would we Mexicans, Chileans, French, Egyptians, Japanese and Hindi be justified in prohibiting English to be spoken in our respective countries? To stigmatize the Spanish language as a divisive, practically subversive, factor demonstrates the racist, divisive and provocative spirit of Professor Huntington.

    By Raymond Leslie Williams
". . . it may well be the most useful book on Fuentes available today." "The first book-length study of Terra Nostra, it sets out to prove that this novel exemplifies Fuentes's idea that 'writing implies an engagement with history, culture and identity.' ...Highly recommended for academic and public libraries." "Fuentes is no longer a Mexican novelist; he is part of world literature, and this book should interest all those who have read him in translation." Smitten by the modernity of Cervantes and Borges at an early age, Carlos Fuentes has written extensively on the cultures of the Americas and elsewhere. His work includes over a dozen novels, among them The Death of Artemio Cruz Christopher Unborn The Old Gringo , and Terra Nostra , several volumes of short stories, numerous essays on literary, cultural, and political topics, and some theater. In this book, Raymond Leslie Williams traces the themes of history, culture, and identity in Fuentes' work, particularly in his complex, major novel Terra Nostra . He opens with a biography of Fuentes that links his works to his intellectual life. The heart of the study is Williams' extensive reading of the novel Terra Nostra , in which Fuentes explores the presence of Spanish culture and history in Latin America. Williams concludes with a look at how Fuentes' other fiction relates to
