Okay, maybe my enthusiasm is taking me a little too far, but the man could literally write about the dirt under his feet and it would still be a riveting and enjoyable read.

    Stephen Fry on Firefox
Comedian, Actor, Author, Quizmaster and Universal Force for Good, Stephen Fry on Firefox and its glorious array of extensions Themes are all very well, but it is extensions that offer the real powerhouse possibilities. Some allow extraordinary control over tabbing, searching and selection, others remodel the toolbars with special features and form-fillers ("Groowe" and iMacros are personal favourites). Still others incorporate the features of popular bookmark sites (I use deli.cio.us and Stumbleupon, both of which have many official and unofficial Firefox extensions), while yet others allow you to modify the way you use your chosen social network or picture site. Dive in and search. Go to Tools-Add-ons, click the jigsaw puzzle icon, and the Get Extensions link at the bottom right of the small window. If you haven't come across Fry's weekly Guardian Dork Talk articles , they are worth checking out every Saturday. They combine his Cambridge-educated, Arts-slanted love of words with an understanding and love for computing in all its forms. He is a technology advocate who writes beautiful and winning prose, an intermediary of such eloquence and persuasiveness who can bridge the gap between art and science. This is him on Tim Berners-Lee I had the privilege of meeting the great man recently and he showed me the browser equivalent he is working on at MIT for the new Semantic Web (another time, another article perhaps) - an application called The Tabulator. He had failed to notice that his full initials feature prominently in TaBuLator and it was perhaps wrong of me to point it out, but the squirms of self-deprecation were marvellous to watch. This is a man who could have taken a hundredth of a cent for every commercial transaction for just five years and been rich beyond computation, he could have linked himself with corporations, put his name about in public, branded himself and offered his opinions on everything and everyone. Instead, he chooses quietly to work on ways to ensure a future web of even greater openness and neutrality in scientific, intellectual and political exchange. He is what my grandfather would have called a real mensch.

Stephen fry has a blog!
Yesssss!
Stephen is a major hero of mine. His cutting edge humour in the 80s [during which time by his own admission, he basically punched Hugh Laurie a lot] , his wonderful novels and his unapologetically intelligent and courageous television programmes have all been a source of delight for me.
In the same way as I would be happy to listen to an audiobook of the phone directory if Stephen was the narrator, I don't much care what he writes about in his blog. Just to watch the man string sentences together in the English language is going to be a joy.
His inaugural post is about smartphones. Happy reading

Stephen Fry Reviews Electric Toothbrush, HTML 5 Proposals
By Rob Beschizza Categories: Appliances Polymathic wit and Guardian gadget blogger Stephen Fry reviews an electric toothbrush and laments how WC3, the web standards group, is being pressured by Apple and Nokia to turn HTML 5 into corporate monkey markup language. The latter is annoying, the former, astonishing: "The the Oral-B®, Professional Care™ Triumph™ (with Wireless SmartGuide) Oral-B (”powered by Braun” ... is so over-engineered as almost to defy description. A base station, where sits and charges the toothbrush itself, transmits by radio to a receiving element. The receiver substation is a plastic cartouche complete with obligatory LCD screen called a SmartGuide (phrases compressed with UpperCaseLetters such as this are DeRigueur for today’s sad MarketingPerson), which gives a reading of how long you’ve brushed, and how long you’ve got to go in each of the quadrants of the mouth... Although all this wireless tosh is senseless and functionally meaningless, I love it. Brushing my teeth bores me to tears and anything - anything - that relieves the tedium of the procedure is good." He then demands a treadmill with a pursuit game integrated into the display.

Stephen Fry's guide to web 2.0
Lovely article by Stephen Fry on Web 2.0 in today's Weekend magazine.
Web 2.0 was christened, so far as I am aware, by Tim O'Reilly.
Oh really? No, sir, O'Reilly.
He was one of the early advocates of open source programming, and greatly championed Perl, the language my father speaks fluently but which involves too much brain power and concentration for the likes of me.
These days web 2.0 refers both to user-generated content and to social networking sites.
Rather than passively searching, browsing and eyeballing the billions of pages of the web, millions now contribute their videos, their journals, their music, their photos, their lives.

Stephen Fry shares one of my little bugbears
We’ll answer that vital point momentarily, as they say here in the US. I do enjoy hearing American waiters using that word; as you enter a restaurant they might say, “I’ll be with you momentarily”. They are usually righter than they know: a fleeting vision that flickers before your eyes and then is gone. I suppose ‘in a moment’ takes too long to say in their busy lives and ‘presently’ is English English to the point of being more or less flagrantly homosexual, so ‘momentarily’ it is. Stephen Fry: Hello and welcome to this podcast. I am Stephen Fry. I am sitting at the moment in the Pillared Room of 10 Downing Street, London, on a sunny winter's day and I am going to be speaking to the Right Honourable Tony Blair, the Prime Minister, about all kinds of things - history, culture, life at the top. So Prime Minister I want to get all the questions out of the way that everybody asks when they come here, and that is you stand in the lobby and there is a picture of Robert Walpole, and then you go up the stairs and every succeeding Prime Minister flashes past you as you leap up the landings. Do you feel their shadow over you? Prime Minister: Particularly the ones from Disraeli and Gladstone onwards are the ones that you recognise. I mean I confess when I go down the staircase and you see all the pictures and then you get to the drawings of the ones.

Stephen Fry Detailed Biography
Stephen John Fry (born 24 August 1957) is an English comedian, writer, actor, novelist, filmmaker and television personality. The former comedy collaborator of Hugh Laurie, his renowned intellect has most recently led to the success of television panel game QI, of which he is host. Fry was born in Hampstead, London, the son of Alan Fry, a British scientist, and Marianne Neumann, an Austrian of Jewish descent. He has an elder brother, Roger, and a younger sister, Joanna. He grew up in the village of Booton near Reepham, Norfolk, having moved to the countryside when very young. Fry briefly attended Gresham's School, Holt, before going on to Stout's Hill Preparatory School, Uppingham School, Rutland, where he joined Fircroft house. He was expelled from Uppingham when he was fourteen, and subsequently from the Paston School. At seventeen, following his failure at Norfolk College of Arts and Technology, Fry absconded with a credit card stolen from a family friend, and as a result spent three months in Pucklechurch Prison on grounds of fraud. Following his release he resumed education at Norwich City College, promising administrators that he would study rigorously to sit the Cambridge Entrance Exams. He passed well enough to gain a scholarship before going on to Queens' College, Cambridge.
