My depression and me Fry to talk of his misery
January 20, 2006
Stephen Fry is to talk openly for the first time about his battle with manic depression for a BBC Two programme. Fry, who said he felt suicidal when he walking out of the West End show Cell Mates in February 1995, will talk candidly about his experiences of living with the condition. His comments will come in two hour-long shows he is presenting on how celebrities cope with mental health problems. He has already travelled to the US to interview actors and comedians about how it affects their work, TV industry website Broadcastnow.com reports. Fry has already interviewed actress Carrie Fisher, who has battled with bipolar disorder since her teens. The shows, being made by independent production house IWC Media, are due to be broadcast in May. Click here to read about the most trusted and tested St. John's Wort formulation in America.

Phrase Had his only contribution to literature been Lord Emsworth and Blandings Castle, his place in history would have been assured. Had he written of none but Mike and Psmith, he would be cherished today as the best and brightest of our comic authors. If Jeeves and Wooster had been his solitary theme, still he would be hailed as The Master. If he had given us only Ukridge, or nothing but recollections of the Mulliner family, or a pure diet of golfing stories, Wodehouse would nonetheless be considered immortal. That he gave us all those and more - so much more - is our good fortune and a testament to the most industrious, prolific and beneficent author ever to have sat down, scratched his head and banged out a sentence. When Hugh Laurie and I had the extreme honour and terrifying responsibility of being asked to play Bertie Wooster and Jeeves in a series of television adaptations, we were aware of one huge problem facing us. Wodehouse's three great achievements are Plot, Character and Language, and the greatest of these by far is Language. Wodehouse's language lives and breathes in its written, printed form. It oscillates privately between the page and the reader. The moment it is read out or interpreted it is compromised. Our only hope in making the television series was that the stories and characters might provide enough pleasure on their own to inspire the viewer to pick up a book and encounter The Real Thing.

Listen to Stephen Fry and Christopher Hitchens debating blasphemy at last year's Guardian Hay Festival
By Sarah Crown Podcast

One of the most talked-about events at last year's Guardian Hay Festival was the Blasphemy Debate, chaired by Joan Bakewell and inspired by the Incitement to Religious Hatred Bill, which had been announced in the Queen's Speech the previous month. The speakers at the debate were the actor and writer Stephen Fry and the journalist Christopher Hitchens, and their frequently heated discussion covered issues of freedom of speech, religious tolerance, multiculturalism and orthodoxy. It was a fascinating, though-provoking and - as you'd expect from two such consummate orators - extremely entertaining event, and as a warm-up to this year's Hay Festival, the good people at Radio Hay, the festival's online broadcaster, have kindly allowed us to offer you the chance to hear it for yourself.

Career: Joined University of Edinburgh in 1983. PhD in Plant Physiology, Department of Botany, University of Leicester, 1978. Research Interests: Our research is centred on the biochemistry and physiology of primary cell walls in higher plants. We are interested in the mechanisms by which newly secreted polysaccharides and glycoproteins become integrated or cross-linked into the growing cell wall and subsequently undergo controlled degradation in vivo . Specific cross-links of interest are those formed via tyrosine residues (isodityrosine etc.) and ferulate residues (dehydrodiferulate etc.) and we are studying the role of quinone methides in forming ether bonds to cell wall polysaccharides. Our interest in cell wall degradation in vivo in vivo because of the possibility that this generates hydroxyl radicals in the apoplast. Other current interests include the evolution of the primary cell walls of land plants (including bryophytes) and their probable ancestors the charophytes; the metabolism of the sugar nucleotide precursors of wall polysaccharides; and the hormone-like biological activities of 'oligosaccharins' (certain cell-wall-derived oligosaccharides).

Stephen Fry
UKTV likes to recognise the greatest of British talents. On this occasion we salute Stephen Fry, one of the country's wittiest comedians. Who is Mr Fry? The son of inventor Alan Fry, Stephen grew up in Norfolk with his brother, Roger and sister, Jo. He attended both Uppingham School and Stout's Hill before heading to Queens College, Cambridge in 1979. Just before entering full time student life, though, Fry spent three months in Pucklechurch prison for credit card fraud. He finished his degree with a 2:1 in English in 1982. Just two years later Fry became a millionaire thanks to his rewrite of the musical "Me and My Girl" which also earned him a nomination for a Tony award. His career took off with a bang and throughout the 80's he worked in TV, radio and wrote a column in the Daily Telegraph. A familiar face without a doubt, probably better known for his parts in Blackadder, Jeeves and Wooster and now the voice of the Harry Potter movies narrator. Friends of old They say the best friends you make are at university. It seems to be the case for Fry and friends. At Cambridge Stephen was a member of the Cherubs drinking club, as well as a member of Footlights where he met Emma Thompson, Tony Slattery, Martin Bergmann, and Hugh Laurie. It was Emma Thompson who introduced Fry to Laurie and the pair embarked on a fruitful friendship and writing partnership in 1981. Their work made them a name at May Week, at the Edinburgh Festival, and even took them on a three month tour of Australia. The cooperation continued well into their careers and most notably with Jeeves and Wooster.

Stephen Fry Reviews Oral B Professional Care Triumph, Loves It
Some of us may dabble in being funny to go along with our tech knowledge, but professional comedian Stephen Fry actually knows a thing about both fields. Today he reviews the Oral-B Professional Care Triumph, which has a special tech that allows it to wirelessly show how long you've been brushing each corner of your mouth and rate it according to what dentists recommend. He loves it. He also loves the idea of turning something mundane into something exciting via technology, and wants it to go further. He says: I want a treadmill that presents on screen a reality game that interacts with your exercise: an adventure in which you chase villains, rescue damsels or solve puzzles - this is where technology should be headed so far as humdrum chores are concerned. Come on, you eccentric British software geniuses and game designers. Help me to a brilliant white smile and slim fitness the fun way. YES! Someone make a Running Hero game for Xbox 360 right now, complete with $300 treadmill attachment. We'd totally buy that if we could simulate running on screen, as opposed to the treadmill workout we do now where we just stare into the nearby lake and wished we were drowning instead. [

This post is of the third variety, so if you have no idea who Stephen Fry is, feel free to move on.
But those of you with a taste for great British comedy will know exactly who Mr. Fry is and why it's so exciting that he's now writing a weekly column about technology for the Guardian . They brag that he bought the second Mac ever sold in England (Douglas Adams, as you might know if you have the same tastes I do, bought the first), but what can't you brag about Stephen Fry he's hilarious, insightful, and one of those guys who's pretty much done everything and been entertaining the whole time. His new column won't be all about Apple, but, as he says, Apple can't be ignored in any discussion about computers:

Stephen Fry Helps Fledgling Poets Leave the Nest

By CLAUDIA LA ROCCO Published: August 21, 2006 When someone orders an unappetizing meal at a restaurant, the usual response is to dismiss it by saying, “This is no good,” or “I’m not into Mexican food.” But with poetry, the baby, more often than not, is tossed with the bathwater: “I just don’t get poetry” is the typical reaction when an individual poem makes a reader’s eyes cross. If Stephen Fry had his way, we poor, benighted members of the masses wouldn’t suffer along unenlightened believing that poetry is only for specialists. You might know Mr. Fry from any of a number of lovely British movies and television shows, like “Gosford Park” or “Jeeves and Wooster,” or, more recently, in the less than lovely “V for Vendetta.” But the droll Mr. Fry has a “dark and dreadful secret” to share: he writes poetry. And like so many actors before him, he has written a tell-all. As it happens, it is also a how-to.

UK: Stephen Fry praises E-TEN Glofiish X800 and Windows Mobile
The Guardian is not a tabloid but a respectable broadsheet newspaper popular in UK - albeit with left-wing inclinations, that however shouldn't influence their writings about gadgets... so it is interesting to notice, that British popular comedian and actor - Stephen Fry - is now writing for The Guardian about mobile phones and in today's issue he is praising both Windows Mobile operating system and Eten Glofiish X800 phone (see our review of this phone HERE
For all that, I've lived for weeks using HTC and Palm devices that run WM5 and WM6, and I happily concede that Microsoft's cut-down OS does have strengths
Glofiish is made by E-Ten and you can colour me impressed. It is true 3.5G. That's nothing to do with gigabyte memory, by the way, but indicates "third and a half generation" capability. In short, it obtains the highest data transfer speeds possible in mobile telephony. It will first try to pick up HSDPA or UMTS signals from the network, then EDGE
For those who want it all, then, the Glofiish X800 can compete with the HTC Tytn II and the other big players. I give it a big tick.
