Robert Frost (1874 - 1963)
Robert Lee Frost, b. San Francisco, Mar. 26, 1874, d. Boston, Jan. 29, 1963, was one of America's leading 20th-century poets and a four-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize. An essentially pastoral poet often associated with rural New England, Frost wrote poems whose philosophical dimensions transcend any region. Although his verse forms are traditional - he often said, in a dig at arch rival Carl Sandburg , that he would as soon play tennis without a net as write free verse - he was a pioneer in the interplay of rhythm and meter and in the poetic use of the vocabulary and inflections of everyday speech. His poetry is thus both traditional and experimental, regional and universal. After his father's death in 1885, when young Frost was 11, the family left California and settled in Massachusetts. Frost attended high school in that state, entered Dartmouth College, but remained less than one semester. Returning to Massachusetts, he taught school and worked in a mill and as a newspaper reporter. In 1894 he sold "My Butterfly: An Elegy" to The Independent, a New York literary journal. A year later he married Elinor White, with whom he had shared valedictorian honors at Lawrence (Mass.) High School. From 1897 to 1899 he attended Harvard College as a special student but left without a degree. Over the next ten years he wrote (but rarely published) poems, operated a farm in Derry, New Hampshire (purchased for him by his paternal grandfather), and supplemented his income by teaching at Derry's Pinkerton Academy.

In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life — It goes on. It is absurd to think that the only way to tell if a poem is lasting is to wait and see if it lasts. The right reader of a good poem can tell the moment it strikes him that he has taken an immortal wound — that he will never get over it. Most of the change we think we see in life
Is due to truths being in and out of favor. Everything written is as good as it is dramatic. It need not declare itself in form, but it is drama or nothing.
    • I do not see why I should e'er turn back
Or those should not set forth upon my track
To overtake me, who should miss me here

View: Robert Frost Poems Robert Frost was born in San Francisco in 1874 and after the death of his father he moved with the rest of his family to Massachusetts. He had his first poem published in 1894 by the New York “Independent” it was called “My Butterfly: An Elegy” and earnt him $15. The following year he married Elinor, Elinor encouraged Robert's poetry and together Robert and Elinor were to have 6 children, two of whom died in infancy. For a brief spell after getting married, Robert and Elinor spent time at Harvard but Robert left after 2 years to start a poultry farm. Robert would make several efforts to run farms throughout his life, but rarely with much financial success. In 1912 Robert travelled to England where he worked as a full time poet. He came into contact with other poets such as F.S.Flin, Wilfred Gibson, Edward Thomas and Erza Pound. Edward Thomas in particular offered Robert a lot of encouragement, recognising the originality of Frost’s poetry. However with the onset of the First World War Robert returned to American, and from 1916 to 1938 he worked as an English professor at Amerherst college. Robert Frost was awarded four Pulitzer Prizes, the first one being for “New Hampshire in 1924 and the second one for “West-Running Brook”. Another significant book of poetry Frost wrote was a volume called “Witness Tree”. Some of these poems were darker in tone, partly a reflection on the long series of family tragedies Robert suffered in the 1930s (amongst other things he lost his wife, daughter and son) Robert Frost himself considered these poems to be some of the best he had written, for example “The Most of It” and “Never Again Would Birds’ Song Be the Same”

Robert Frost was a great poet. Here is a brief summary of his life. Robert Frost was born on March 26, 1874 in San Francisco, California. When Frost was two years old, his mother fled to Lawrence, Massachusetts, to get away from her husband, who was a drunkard. She stayed there until her second baby was born, Jeannie, Robert's sister. Then they went back to San Francisco on a train. A few years later, Robert's father died, so they took the body to Lawrence to be buried in the family cemetery. By the time he was 11, Robert Frost had crossed the U.S. three times. After this rough beginning, Robert went on to become a great poet. He married Elinor White and had 2 kids. Robert never in truth had any jobs, except being a poet, but he published many poems in his lifetime. Some of them are: The Road not Taken The Raft of Flowers The Pasture , and others. Robert also won four Pultizer awards and read The Gift Outright at the inauguration of John. F. Kennedy. He died on January 29, 1963 of a heart attack. He was 88 years old.
Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening
Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

    Robert Frost (1874-1963) , four-time Pulitzer Prize winning American poet, teacher and lecturer wrote many popular and oft-quoted poems including “After Apple-Picking”, “The Road Not Taken”, “Home Burial” and “Mending Wall”; I let my neighbour know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each. And some are loaves and some so nearly balls We have to use a spell to make them balance: “Stay where you are until our backs are turned!” We wear our fingers rough with handling them. Oh, just another kind of out-door game, One on a side. It comes to little more: There where it is we do not need the wall: He is all pine and I am apple orchard. My apple trees will never get across And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.

I highly recommend those who only know of Frost through his poetry to read through the biographical information. It hasn't diminished my appreciation for him as a poet nor as a person, but it does, I believe, expand our understanding of his poems. I am also planning on marking the poems with initial publication dates to help with perspective.
A note for students: I am a fan of Robert Frost, but neither I nor my site should be considered authoritative on this subject. Information has been garnered from many available print resources, and sometimes re-typed, which means the possibility of typos. If you wish to cite something you find on my site, I recommend reaching out to your local public/school library for any of the MANY reference books on Frost. As the son of an English teacher, I know that your instructor should have problems with you citing a "fan's" website.

Robert Frost Stone House Museum in So. Shaftsbury, Vermont
A literary landmark, only minutes away from Frost's gravesite in Bennington, was opened in 2002 to honor America's favorite poet. Frost lived in the Stone House in South Shaftsbury, Vermont from 1920 to 1929. Here, Frost composed many of the pieces that became part of his first Pulitzer Prize winning volume New Hampshire, published in 1923, including "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening."
Built c. 1769, the house was considered historic before the Frost period. It is a rare example of colonial architecture made of native stone and timber. It has changed little since Frost's time and remains in excellent condition. The house sits on 7 acres and features many Frostian associations including stone walls, birch trees, a timbered barn and some of Frost's original apple trees. Many poignant episodes in Frost's life happened in this house.
The exhibits are educational and literary covering Frost's life and art. The current exhibit, entitled
