Biography of Philip Morin Freneau
Philip Morin Freneau is usually referred to as the "poet of the American Revolution." Born in New York, he graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1771. Although Freneau had produced several poems before college, it was the experience of pre-Revolutionary War Princeton that turned his interest to public writing. Political concerns led Freneau, James Madison, and their friends Hugh Henry Brackenridge and William Bradford, Jr., to revive the defunct Plain Dealing Club as the American Whig Society. Charged with literary and political enthusiasm, Freneau and Brackenridge collaborated on a picaresque narrative

Philip Freneau's Literary Image of the Indian
by S. Halldorson Philip Freneau (1752-1832) has one strong conviction that runs through all of his poetry. He believes in an ideal America, one that would take the best from European civilization (commerce and science) and the best from Nature and the Indian. Freneau is not concerned with how this will happen, he is merely sure that it will happen and the Englishman and Indian will cease to exist in any physical way in the new United States of America. In his writing the British are simply dismissed as foreigners and invaders of America. In one of Freneau's earliest poems, "The Rising Glory of America," written when he was nineteen, it is clear that he has already established in his mind the natural right of America, and freely criticizes what he sees as the decadent, avaricious invaders from Europe: Gold, fatal gold, was the alluring bait

Philip Freneau
Philip Morin Freneau, the most versatile and vitriolic of the patriot poets, was born in New York, the son of Pierre Fresneau, a tradesman, and Agnes Watson. His father’s Huguenot (French Protestant) faith and his mother’s Presbyterianism influenced Philip to enroll at the College at Nassau (Princeton), the bastion of New Light Christianity in America. Freneau joined the American Whig Society, the more libertarian of the college’s two student clubs. There he taught himself to be a poet, mastering the techniques of satire in the paper wars against the other club, the Cliosophical Society, and the devices of polite literature in verse prepared for the commencement exercises. With fellow Whigs James Madison and Hugh Henry Brackenridge, he composed a farcical romance, Father Bombo’s Pilgrimage to Mecca

The Indian Burying Ground:
This poem is composed of ten four-line stanzas written in iambic
tetrameter. It is organized around two statements: the first stanza and the
last. Freneau starts off by declaring that he thinks the "posture that we give
the dead" is symbolic of the oblivion that follows life, "in spite of all the
learned have said." The middle eight stanzas of the poem cite the Indian
custom of burial, and what it suggests. This movement starts:
Not so the ancients of these lands -
The Indian, when from life released, Again is seated with his friends, And shares again the joyous feast. Freneau expertly suggests the afterlife the Indians ...

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Some of Philip Freneau's poems require an explanation of the changing political context of the 1770s through 1790s so that their arguments may be understood. Freneau's religious poetry, with its striking absence of scriptural allusion and Christian doctrine, may prove rather alien to students of traditional Christian background. Discriminations between the beliefs of Patriots and Loyalists, Whigs and Tories, must be supplied for the poems of the 1770s. Discussion of the split of the American revolutionaries into Federalist and Jeffersonian factions during the 1790s is also helpful. "To Sir Toby" is an excellent poem with which to examine the legal justifications of slavery employed during the late 1700s. I find that the early American political cartoons provide a useful way of introducing students to the context of Freneau's politics. (Michel Wynn Jones' The Cartoon History of the American Revolution is a good source.) Sometimes I get a reproduction of one of the newspapers in which a Freneau poem first appeared to show how closely his world view was tied to the journalism of the era.
