George MacDonald Fraser Takes His Leave
His most famous character, Harry Paget Flashman, will live on but author George MacDonald Fraser, best known for resurrecting his literary anti-hero from a Victorian novel and chronicling his years of cowardice and vice, passed away January 2 of this new year at age 82. Fraser never sold movie rights and the dozen existing Flashman books may well be all we'll ever know.
Fraser's stories of Flashman's service in the British army are a politically incorrect survey of the late 19th century's hot spots. Based on "The Flashman Papers," the series was done so well that literally dozens of scholars have reviewed one book or another as factual - to the subsequent detriment of their reputations. It's one of the few times that a fictional liar, cheat and womanizer has been the center of so much attention, and Flashman's completely undeserved reputation for heroism means that his penchant for dereliction of duty is usually misinterpreted in his favor.
If you think you might enjoy a dose of tongue in cheek historical fiction and are unfamiliar with old Flashy, pick up a copy of

Oh no! I have been pacing myself through the Flashman series knowing there were only a dozen or so books. I treated myself to number 7 over Christmas. It's really sad that there won't be any more. GMF was clearly a brilliant writer.

Flashman author George MacDonald Fraser dies
Writer worked as journalist in Britain and Canada for more than 20 years
The Associated Press George MacDonald Fraser, author of the Flashman series of historical adventure yarns has died at the age of 82, his publisher announced late Thursday. George MacDonald Fraser attends the Oldie of the Year Awards on March 21, 2006, in London, England.
(Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images) Fraser died Wednesday following a battle with cancer, said Nicholas Latimer, director of publicity for Knopf, which will release Fraser's latest work The Reavers in the U.S. in April. Latimer was unable to provide details of where Fraser died. He lived on the Isle of Man, off the coast of northwest England. Flashman , published in 1969, introduced readers to an enduring literary antihero: the roguish, irrepressible Harry Flashman. The novel imagined Flashman — the bullying schoolboy of 19th-century classic Tom Brown's Schooldays — grown up to become a soldier in the British army.

I guess I've lived a sheltered life? I'd never heard/read of Mr. Fraser's Flashman series before seeing the Crittenden post yesterday. Then another post today at the new blog, 'Bayou Renaissance Man', prodded me to call my library and reserve "Flashman: From the Flashman Papers 1839-1842". And now with a third mention at 'Irons in the Fire', I know I'm in for a bunch of good reading! 5:19 PM

Friend started me on the years ago. Be prepared: Harry Flashman is a thoroughly despicable character. But the books give some very interesting asides on the history of the time, and are good reads. Fraser's book "Quartered Safe Out Here" is about his time in the Brit Army in Burma in WWII, also very good. 5:47 PM

Despicable? No. Opportunistic? You betcha. Someone you wouldn't want around your wife or daughter? Not unless you fancy a duel. A stout fellow to follow to get out of danger? Yes. A survivor? Damn straight.

George MacDonald Fraser OBE
View Gallery Author of best-selling Flashman series of novels Born: 2 April, 1925, in Carlisle. Died: 3 January, 2007, on Isle of Man, aged 82.
THE adventures of Flashman made George MacDonald Fraser a worldwide best-selling author. His robust ability – and delight – in telling rip-roaring yarns captured readers' imagination and his 12 Flashman books earned him renown and considerable sums. Fraser's wit and energetic style made the ne'er-do-well Sir Harry Paget Flashman VC, KCB, KCIE a cult hero and there was often talk that the rogue's exploits would be turned into a series of films. Flashman gloried in his cowardly exploits and was involved in some of the great moments of history: always emerging with his reputation enhanced. He saved King and Empire on numerous occasions and was much honoured and praised. Fraser admitted in a BBC interview: "I was always on the side of the villain when I was a child and went to the movies. People like rascals: they like rogues."

I remember reading some of his Flashman books when they first came out, many years ago. Not only was Fraser a very witty and satirical author, he was also a very successful screenplay writer, his most successful works being The Three Musketeers...
Before he died, Fraser wrote a really good piece about political correctness
Here is some of that article:
When 30 years ago I resurrected Flashman, the bully in Thomas Hughes's Victorian novel Tom Brown's Schooldays, political correctness hadn't been heard of, and no exception was taken to my adopted hero's character, behaviour, attitude to women and subject races (indeed, any races, including his own) and general awfulness.
On the contrary, it soon became evident that these were his main attractions. He was politically incorrect with a vengeance. Through the Seventies and Eighties I led him on his disgraceful way, toadying, lying, cheating, running away, treating women as chattels, abusing inferiors of all colours, with only one redeeming virtue - the unsparing honesty with which he admitted to his faults, and even gloried in them.

R.I.P. George MacDonald Fraser
It is with great sadness that I report the death of a cherished author, George MacDonald Fraser, on January 2nd, aged 82. His Flashman series features the cravenly, yet absurdly lucky, bounder and "hero", Harry Paget Flashman. The twelve titles are a wonderful way to soak up Victorian military history. Like Thomas Berger's Little Big Man, the Flashman books insert our military man and sometime spy in the middle of actual historical events with over-the-top results (i.e., gastric disturbance impels him to unwittingly lead the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava).
"Flashy" rogers his way around the globe, collecting medals for unintentional bravery and generally blundering his way to a brigadiered generalhood. I feel the series just got better over time with greater nuances to Flashman's character and to that of his wife, Elspeth. I have read through the Flashman series once and daydream about digesting it again in the future during a long, lazy stretch of reading.
Flashman is responsible for a bit of family legend at Dan's expense. Two years ago, my loving spouse went to the local big box bookstore to pick up a copy of "Flashman on the March" (sadly, perhaps the last Flashman book ever, although there is some possibility of an

George MacDonald Fraser The Pyrates , and I also liked Mr. American . When I read on The Rap Sheet about Fraser's passing, my first selfish thought was, "Now we'll never get the story of how Flashy fought on both sides during the Civil War." But now I'm just glad that he wrote the books he did and that I was attracted to that cover.

I'm sorry to hear that, Bill. I love Flashy and have also read a number of his other books, including the 3 about his Highland regiment post-WWII (McAuslan, etc.) and The Pyrates. At least I still have the last few to read. Jeff M. 7:02 AM

I read two or three of his Flashman books in 2007, and it was great to return to the series. I'm sorry there won't be any more, unless there's a trove of unpublished manuscripts lying about a la every other author who has died lately. RIP George.
