The French Anne Frank
Harrowing diary published by Jewish university student who perished in Bergen-Belsen arrives in French bookstores, set to be best-seller Lior Zilberstein Published: Israel Jewish Scene The French press has already deemed it the ‘literary sensation of 2008’, but all lofty press superlatives aside, the Helene Berr Journal is undoubtedly a harrowing, captivating read. This Journal is the diary of Helene Berr, a Jewish student in the Sorbonne who, like Anne Frank, perished in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. She left behind this harrowing account of her life between April 1942 and March 1944, now published 60 years later. This text was diligently guarded by Helene’s brother, Jacques, and was intended for her fianc©e, Jean Morawiecki who fought alongside the Free French Forces in Africa. As the years wore on, Jean became a renowned French diplomat, and received the journal written by “the grey- eyed Helene from the Latin quarter." Jean ultimately returned the diary to Helene’s family, who saved it for years before donating it to the French Holocaust museum in 2002.

70, 273 deaths were recorded. In response to widespread religious objection, the program formally was stopped, however, informally continued at hospitals and asylums. Between 1941 and 1945, a program, called 14f13, authorized euthanasia centers which murdered concentration camp inmates in Germany and Austria, Jews and Gentiles, who no longer could work. About 20,000 died under this program. SS units in Poland and the Soviet Union simply shot mentally and physically handicapped people in Nazi occupied conquered territory. In all, about 250,000 mentally and physically handicapped people met their death under this false "euthanasia" program.
For younger teenagers, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum's Handicapped pamphlet is available. Inna R. Friedman's Other Victims (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1990) is readable for middle schoolers and includes information on sterilization and murders of the disabled also a discussion of the fate of German mullatos, a subject rarely treated. For high school students, By Trust Betrayed by Hugh Gregory (New York: Henry Holt, 1990) is a study of the systematic murder of the handicapped based on captured Nazi documents and testimonies. Anne Frank Biography
Anne Frank was a Jewish girl, born June 12, 1929, and lived through the time that Hitler was ruling Germany. Her family escaped to the Netherlands, to start a new life where they could do what they wanted. She had a father, mother, and a sister that was three years older than her. She was in the Netherlands at the time she celebrated her 13th birthday. On that day she received the best present anyone could give her...a diary. Anne had dreams of becoming a writer, and was delighted with her gift. Instead of writing "Dear Diary", like anyone else would, she named her diary. She wrote to Kitty...as she called her diary. On the first page of her diary she wrote this: I hope I shall be able to confide in you completely, as I have never been able to do in anyone before, and I hope that you will be a great support and comfort to me.
Anne Frank
She continued writing in her diary two days later. She wrote in it for over two years. That diary became one of the most published books ever, and had been translated into over 60 different languages. Anne had many friends in the Netherlands, and she played with them every day. Her friends and she played pranks on other residents, like pouring water on their head from a building above.

The diseased chestnut tree, right, comforted Anne Frank while she hid from the Nazis during World War II. Amsterdam officials said Tuesday it will be cut down Nov. 21.
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - The chestnut tree that comforted Anne Frank while she hid from the Nazis during World War II will be cut down Nov. 21 because it is too diseased to be saved, the city said Tuesday. The 150-year-old chestnut, familiar to the many readers of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” suffers from fungus and moths that have caused more than half its trunk to rot. “The state of this monumental chestnut is a real danger for its surroundings,” including the “secret annex” atop the canal-side warehouse where the Frank family hid, the city said. “Its rapid decay makes it necessary to take action now.” The Jewish teenager made several references to the tree in the diary that she kept during the 25 months she remained indoors until the family was arrested by the Nazis in August 1944.

A New Wave of Support for Anne Frank’s Ailing Tree
Herman Wouters for The New York Times Anne Frank wrote in her diary that she enjoyed looking at the old chestnut tree outside the annex where her family hid. In recent years the tree has suffered from fungus, which has turned almost half its trunk to white rot, and moths have infested its crown.
By JOHN TAGLIABUE Published: October 2, 2007 AMSTERDAM, Sept. 28 — Sixty-two years after dying of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Anne Frank continues to haunt countless readers of her diary, with its youthful exuberance, dry humor and shattering hints of the violence that would sweep away her world. But fewer people know of the soaring chestnut tree that gave comfort to Anne while she and her family hid for more than two years during the German occupation. The tree, in the backyard of the house where Anne hid, gained fame more than a decade ago when an oil spill in the yard prompted the municipal government to cleanse its roots and the soil surrounding them, to prevent the tree from dying.

  • Anne Frank was a teenager when she was caught up in the horrors of Nazi Germany. She died in a concentration camp. She left behind a diary, where she wrote about her experiences, hopes, and dreams. Here are a few quotes from Anne Frank.
    • "Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don't know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!"
      - Anne Frank
"I don't believe the war is simply the work of politicians and capitalists. Oh no, the common man is every bit as guilty; otherwise, people and nations would have rebelled long ago! There's a destructive urge in people, the urge to rage, murder, and kill. And until all of humanity, without exception, undergoes a metamorphosis, wars will continue to be waged, and everything that has been carefully built up, cultivated and grown will be cut down and destroyed, only to start all over again!"
