He studied medicine at Guy's Hospital but left without a degree and turned to writing as a career. His first success was PAYMENT DEFERRED, which was later dramatized. In 1932 Forester was offered a Hollywood contract and from then until 1939 spent thirteen weeks in America each year. Upon the outbreak of war he entered the Ministry of Information, and he later sailed with the Royal Navy to collect material for THE SHIP. He made a voyage to the Bering Sea to gather material for a similar book on the US Navy, and it was during this trip that he developed arteriosclerosis, a disease that left him crippled. He continued to write and in CAPTAIN HORNBLOWER created the most renowned sailor in contemporary history.
C.S Forester died in 1966.

C.S. Forester
horatio, come blow your horn Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Forester is best known as the author of the Horatio Hornblower novels; Hornblower has been the quintessential literary naval officer for decades, though Patrick O'Brian 's Jack Aubrey is catching up to him. Somehow I had avoided reading any of the Hornblower novels until recently, so I've come to them after Patrick O'Brian; this is not the typical order, and so my opinion is perhaps biased. That said, I've enjoyed the Hornblower novels I've read so far. They haven't the depth of the Jack Aubrey novels, and indeed I think O'Brian excels Forester in almost every way, but they are likely more accessible as well. Indeed, I think I'd have appreciated O'Brian's work even more had I read Hornblower first, to acquaint me with the milieu: the Royal Navy in the Age of Sail, and more particularly during the Napoleonic wars. The Hornblower novels were not written in chronological order; rather, Forester wrote a couple of novels about the moody, insecure (but amazingly competent) captain, found them popular, and then filled in the rest of his career. This leads to some obvious inconsistencies; the step from Hornblower and the Atropos to Beat to Quarters is particularly jarring.

Description:
Book Description
A stand-alone novel that inspired Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series
Synopsis
It is 1810, and the last French invasion of Portugal has penned Wellington's army behind the river Tagus with their backs to the sea. Separated from his regiment, Rifleman Dodd of the Ninety-Fifth stumbles on a band of undisciplined Portuguese guerrillas. With rough inventiveness he transforms this ramshackle group into an organised fighting force, continually harrying the infuriated enemy as he battles his way back to his own lines. Written by the author of the Hornblower series, DEATH TO THE FRENCH is a classic novel of the Peninsular War, and was the inspiration for Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe books.

C.S. FORESTER
To be sure, Forester must have written more than this, but it's all
I could find listed in my editions—plus what I have on my shelves
that they missed. Well, it's not nothing.
If I can refrain from comment, I haven't read it.
If I have one complaint about the guy's style, it's his habit of putting and four or more times in the same sentence. And if I have one other comment, it's that I agree with Ben Traven in The Death Ship that a boss is always hated by his subordinates. For a wise guy like Forester, I can't understand how he honestly seems to believe that as a commander, a superior officer, Hornblower can be loved by his men; or that navies were better-run and less corrupt in that time than they are now . (It's hard to imagine how they could have been worse.) But maybe I just had my proverbial bad luck with bosses.
some other books

Forester would have loved Payment Deferred
Very clever detective novel. The title gives the plot away, but you'll never guess anyway. Brown on Resolution Plain Murder The other of the two detective novels he wrote. Just as good; much better than most good

He has to work with Admiral Leighton, an inexperienced, over-cautious and incompetent commander who has married the love of Hornblower's life, Lady Barbara Wellesley. They only have half the crew they need, so they have to enlist a large number of fighting men in a hurry.
They put to sea as part of the fleet sent to harass Napoleon's flank, and blockade the Mediterranean coast of Spain to prevent supplies from reaching the French. He is successful at first, and when the Sutherland reaches the blockaded Catalonian coast of Spain, the crew stages astonishing solo raids against the French. But the fear of defeat and capture looms over captain and crew as the Sutherland single-handedly takes on a French squadron of four French ships of the line.

57. C. S. Forester, "The Young Hornblower"

Adam Sampson
C. S. Forester, "The Young Hornblower"
Skip navigation 2007-05-08 14:10; in Adam's Books Hornblower ; 137 words An anthology of the first three Hornblower books: "Mr. Midshipman Hornblower", which is itself a collection of short stories, "Lieutenant Hornblower" and "Hornblower and the Hotspur". (That is, the first three chronologically; they were written as backstory long after Hornblower's ascent to Lord.) These are roughly contemporary with the first couple of Aubrey-Maturin books, which I've also read recently, so I had a nagging feeling of familiarity throughout confirmed by "Hotspur" which ends with the same naval battle as "Post Captain". I suppose there are only so many battles you can write about in a Napoleonic naval saga, although in this case Forester certainly did it first! (I assume the crossover possibilities have already been adequately explored in fan fiction...) Recommended for fans of the genre; Forester's reputation is well-deserved. ISBN 0140119396.
