First American edition, 8vo., 275pp., ink name on front free endpaper, original textured cloth, dust wrapper, skilful restoration to spine ends, a very good copy. Although published in the same year, the English and American editions of Forester's most famous work have alternate endings. In the English edition, the Royal Navy sinks the Konigin Luise, and Rose and Allnutt survive to marry; in the American edition, they fail to sink the ship with the African Queen's torpedo, and Allnutt disappears beneath the waves. Books by C S Forester Shop used books at Biblio.com British historical novelist, biographer, and journalist, best-known as the creator of Horatio Hornblower, a swashbuckling hero and naval officer in Nelson's time, whose career is told in a series of a dozen books. His adventures were also serialized in the Saturday Evening Post . Forester also wrote popular novels and thrillers. Forester was born in Cairo, Egypt, as the son of a minor British governmental officer in the Egyptian Ministry of Education. In 1901 his mother took her five children to London. Forester was educated at Alleyne's Scholl and in 1915 he entered Dulwich College. He then tried to enlist in the army, but failed the physical. Forester studied medicine at Guy's Hospital for a few years. In 1921 he abandoned his studies for writing, taking the pen name Cecil Scott Forester. Without much experience in writing Forester's way to literary fame started slowly. In the early phase of his career he wrote novels and biographies, among others NAPOLEON AND HIS COURT (1924), and JOSEPHINE, NAPOLEON'S EMPRESS (1925), and novels PAYMENT DEFERRED (1926), which gained critical success, and BROWN ON RESOLUTION (1929).

Source: Wikipedia Cecil Scott Forester was the pen name of Cecil Louis Troughton Smith (August 27, 1899 - April 2, 1966), an English novelist who rose to fame with tales of adventure with military themes. His most notable works were the 11-book Horatio Hornblower series, about naval warfare during the Napoleonic era, and The African Queen (1935; filmed in 1951 by John Huston). Born in Cairo, Forester had a complicated life, including imaginary parents, a secret marriage and a debilitating illness. During World War II he moved to the United States where he wrote propaganda to help get that country to enter the war on the Allied side, and eventually settled in Berkeley, California. He married Kathleen Belcher in 1926, had two sons, and divorced in 1945. The eldest son, John Forester is a noted cycling activist and wrote a biography of his father. In 1947, C. S. Forester secretly married a woman named Dorothy Foster. He suffered extensively from arteriosclerosis later in life. The popularity of the Hornblower series, built around a central character who was heroic but not too heroic, has continued to grow over time. It is perhaps rivalled only by the much later Aubrey–Maturin series of seafaring novels by Patrick O'Brian. Interestingly, both Hornblower and Aubrey are based in part on the historical figure, Admiral Lord Dundonald of Great Britain (known as Lord Cochrane during the period when the novels are set). Brian Perett has written a book The Real Hornblower: The Life and Times of Admiral Sir James Gordon, GCB, ISBN 1557509689, presenting the case for a different inspiration, namely James Alexander Gordon.

    C. S. Forester
    C. S. Forester was born in Cairo in 1899, where his father was stationed as a government official. He studied medicine at Guy's Hospital and, after leaving Guy's without a degree, he turned to writing as a career. His first success was Payment Deferred, a novel written at the age of twenty-four and later dramatized and filmed with Charles Laughton in the leading role. In 1932 Forester was offered a Hollywood contract, and from then until 1939 he spent thirteen weeks of every year in America. On the outbreak of war he entered the Ministry of Information and later he sailed with the Royal Navy to collect the material for The Ship. He made a voyage to the Bering Sea to gather material for a similar book on the United States Navy, and it was during this trip that he was stricken with arteriosclerosis, a disease which left him crippled. However, he continued to write and in the Hornblower novels created the most renowned sailor in contemporary fiction. He died in 1966. Email Alerts

He is, of course, best known and remembered for Horatio Hornblower his maritime fiction series character. Hugely popular not only then but also today. Many of his other works have now drifted into obscurity sadly but there is a treasure trove awaiting those who seek them out.

While not the first written, this novel is the first chronologically in the Hornblower series, beginning when he is a 17 year old midshipmen just coming aboard his first ship, The Justinian: [Mr. Masters] looked with attention at the approaching figure. It was that of a skinny young man
only just leaving boyhood behind, something above middle height, with feet whose adolescent
proportions to his size were accentuated by the thinness of his legs and his big half-boots. His
gawkiness called attention to his hands and elbows. The newcomer was dressed in a badly

stock, and above the neck was a white bony face. A white face was a rarity on the deck of a ship
