Lower Woods
I had an hour spare this morning. I decided to have a quick walk around the Lower Woods reserve near Wickwar. I saw Marsh Tits, Nuthatches, Siskins, Fieldfares, and Buzzards. I also saw my first Red Admiral butterfly of the year.
I stopped at the Leyhill Farm Shop on the way back and ate a home made fresh from the oven Scotch egg while I watched a Nuthatch on one of their feeders in the car park. I know how to live! Posted by Richard L Ford 0 comments

Slimbridge Again
I found it very hard to get motivated this weekend, but I did manage to venture as far as Slimbridge this morning for an hour or two. A Glaucous Gull had been seen briefly earlier in the morning, but unfortunately it did not reappear. The Dumbles and the Tack Piece were full of birds with the Bean Goose, a few Ruff, and a Spotted Redshank the highlights amongst the mass of wildfowl. Posted by Richard L Ford 3 comments

Temminck's Stint
I took my place in a very busy Holden Tower at Slimbridge this morning in the hope of seeing the Temminck's Stint that had been present for a while. Luckily for me most people were looking out of the front of the hide at the pool which seems to be it's favourite place, but there was no sign of the bird. I set up overlooking the Tack Piece in the vain hope of finding it amongst the Dunlin, as I was sure this must be where it was hiding. Unfortunately as anybody who knows Slimbridge well at this time of year will testify, my task was akin to finding a familiar face amongst a football crowd.

Richard Ford on Raymond Carver
The New Yorker , October 5, 1998)
by Melissa Byles.
Life is a gooeyness whose bearings on literature have been the occasion for perennial pondering. Writing about a story by Carver, Ford offers some of his own: "Life was this way yes, we already knew that. But this life, these otherwise unnoticeable people's suitability for literary expression seemed new. One also felt that a consequence of the story was seemingly to intensify life, even dignify it, and to locate in it shadowed corners and niches that needed revealing so that we readers could practice life better ourselves. And yet the story itself, in its spare, self-conscious intensity, was such a made thing, not like life at all; it was a piece of nearly abstract artistic construction calculated to produce almost giddy pleasure." Life, in Ford's view, is something that is or flows in easily recognizable ways. About art, he makes, I believe, the following well-worn but not necessarily well-taken points: art can have an insignificant subject matter (think of old shoes in Van Gogh paintings); art makes life more worthy, and may even a surprisingly unmodern point teach us morals, a conduct; yet art is not like life, in that art is a calculated construction, while life involves less calculation than chance. Ford clarifies this somewhat further on: "And in plain enough ways, when we told those stories to each other, in 1979, they meant something albeit something simple: that life goes this way or life goes that way; that chance is always involved, and that living is usually just dealing with consequences. In one way or other, of course, fiction is often about just that: sorting through consequences the past impending on the present and setting into sometimes astonishing motion the future."

Complete text of the short document ford signed September 8, 1974 granting a pardon to richard Nixon.

President Gerald R. Ford's Proclamation 4311, Granting a Pardon to Richard Nixon
September 8, 1974 By the President of the United States of America a Proclamation Richard Nixon became the thirty-seventh President of the United States on January 20, 1969 and was reelected in 1972 for a second term by the electors of forty-nine of the fifty states. His term in office continued until his resignation on August 9, 1974. Pursuant to resolutions of the House of Representatives, its Committee on the Judiciary conducted an inquiry and investigation on the impeachment of the President extending over more than eight months. The hearings of the Committee and its deliberations, which received wide national publicity over television, radio, and in printed media, resulted in votes adverse to Richard Nixon on recommended Articles of Impeachment. As a result of certain acts or omissions occurring before his resignation from the Office of President, Richard Nixon has become liable to possible indictment and trial for offenses against the United States. Whether or not he shall be so prosecuted depends on findings of the appropriate grand jury and on the discretion of the authorized prosecutor. Should an indictment ensue, the accused shall then be entitled to a fair trial by an impartial jury, as guaranteed to every individual by the Constitution. It is believed that a trial of Richard Nixon, if it became necessary, could not fairly begin until a year or more has elapsed. In the meantime, the tranquility to which this nation has been restored by the events of recent weeks could be irreparably lost by the prospects of bringing to trial a former President of the United States. The prospects of such trial will cause prolonged and divisive debate over the propriety of exposing to further punishment and degradation a man who has already paid the unprecedented penalty of relinquishing the highest elective office of the United States.

    Asking Ford
New Millions contributor Noah, who recently wrote a review of Richard Ford's The Lay of the Land and helped answer a question (see the comments) about where to start when reading Ford's books, managed to get a question in at yesterday's Washington Post online chat with Ford. The question elicited a fairly long response from Ford, one that name drops a pair of his more well-know contemporaries. I'm quite certain that Noah is from Brooklyn but for some reason, the Post indicated his question was coming from Queens: Queens, NY: At a Barnes and Noble reading in NYC, you said, almost inaudibly because someone was mad to ask another question of you, that one of your personal favorite pieces of your own was "Communist", the last story in Rock Springs . Can you talk just a little about that story, what it means to you? Do you ever feel that Bascombe-mania overpowers your other work, like the dog that is most aggressive in pursuing the owner's attentions?

He has run and worked basketball camps for 15 years, and has taught male and female players from second graders to D-I college athletes in a variety of contexts. For six years, Richard co-directed a national point guard camp, teaching high school and college point guards the finer aspects of point guard play in venues from coast to coast. Richard also has impressive experience outside of basketball. He attended law school at the University of Georgia, and practiced law with prestigious firms in Atlanta and Athens. He also taught law classes at the UGA and Duke law schools, and coached championship oral advocacy teams at both schools. He even won a case in the U.S. Supreme Court! These experiences have served Richard well as a basketball instructor. Richard is an effective communicator and teacher who motivates players to achieve championship performance. by Andrew Kiraly As the first wave of kinetic energy is spent and velocity declines to approx. 25 km/h, the passenger will barely even have a chance to notice the glittering leaves on the red oaks trembling in their dour assent to fall, harkening the time for leather baseball mitts to be stowed away and rakes removed from sheds (painted over season after season as if somehow loath to revisit regrets), before reaching the 40 m drop (see attached free-body diagram), propelling rider at approx. 70 km/h in rough accounting of both potential and kinetic energy loci (see attached diagram), with a suddenness that makes the passenger wonder if the drop and its attendant speed ( Second and third clothoid loops (both 25 m, 12 m [r1], 18 m [r2]) result in car velocity of 30 km/h, marked by the way it flutters the passenger's hair against the collar of his chartreuse polo shirt, a decidedly summery choice but somehow forgivable in this fall season that seems to smell of longing and encrypted reluctance, a reaching back for promises that weren't ever fulfilled, but ones the passenger never had the lack of faith to think could expire. (Note that a per-passenger mass > 120 kg may require safety braking to bring body to rest.)

It is a first-person account of a weekend in the life of novelist-turned-sportswriter Frank Bascombe, a tough-minded yet thoughtful, alienated yet acutely observant character whose reflections on his own life reveal much about contemporary America.
