Charles Henri Ford
Between Bridges, London, UK ‘The Garden of Disorder: Works and Publications by Charles Henri Ford’, curated by Daniel Buchholz, Christopher M¼ller and Mitchell Algus, featured a theurgic array of luminescent materials produced by the poet, editor, novelist, artist and filmmaker. A prolific producer of extraordinarily prescient range, Ford is perhaps best known for his editorship of experimental literary magazine Blues and of View – a Documents-esque glossy devoted to the Surrealist avant-garde of which he was part in 1940s New York. William Burroughs observed of Ford that, ‘Withal he is possessed by an enigmatic and eerie charm as a member of some spectral ©lite. He has the “mark” about him.’ A potent comment indeed when registered in the nefarious cast of Burroughs’ own ‘eerie charm’. Objects on show included books, banners, collages, magazines and photographs that provided an overview not only of Ford’s frisky creative tempo but also of the times in which he produced. There is a sure hand present throughout the 60-year span of the work on display – in terms of style and content; however, this may be due as much to Ford’s ‘future-producing’ modalities of print output as to a historical tracking of one man’s life as an auteur. The show was squashed into the tiny Between Bridges space, which, although a fitting formal equivalent for the density of Ford’s poetry, made it very difficult to get a panorama of the breadth of pieces shown.

Blues. "A new name and I shall continue to exist Your left side is next to mine, no one explains why" (Originally published in 7 Poems by Charles Henri Ford, Starstreams Poetry Series #3, Nepal, 1974.) These were the times when art was re-inventing itself and Charles Henri had a hand on it all. The list of his comrades is overwhelming. Just check out his index! But first we have to warn the newspeak politically-correct reader about the themes and language. He is from the South and those who are offended by his localisms are to be pitied for the language milieu in which they grew up. The book is intellectually ahead, not behind its time. It is a nonpareil document of the intellectual bohemian life. Freshness was the force behind the artistic milieu that relied on spontaneity and lived Pound’s dictum "Make it new." To think otherwise is to fall into the problem of apathy and numbness we have in the Information Age. Again, it fits Pound’s definition of literature "as news that stays news." "Neither is Pavlik’s sometimes expressed idea of me the whole truth: someone who drinks his blood, lives on him, remains young while he grows old."

Henry Ford
Henry Ford was born on a farm just outside of Dearborn, Michigan . He attended the local public schools as well as a private grammar school. During Ford's youthful years, he showed a great interest in mechanics. In 1879, he became an apprentice in a machine shop. After working there for some time, he went to school in Detroit to be trained as a machinist. With his schooling behind him, Ford went on to become the chief engineer of the Edison Company in 1893. Ford began to experiment with engines in 1890. After playing with some designs for a while, he completed his first gasoline engine in his backyard shop on Bagley Avenue in Detroit . With the success of his first project, he went on to build his first automobile, the Quadricycle, which was completed in 1896. It is now on exhibition in Dearborn. The automobile is like nothing on the road today. It is a basic design consisting of a small wooden box with a single seat. It has a steering tiller, bicycle wheels, and an electric bell on the front. One part of the engine is made from an exhaust pipe from a steam engine and the flywheel is made of wood. The vehicle can still run today. In 1898 he left the Edison Company to be supervisor of Detroit Automobile Company. Investors balked before serious production started, and the company folded in 1900.

View Magazine's Marcel Duchamp Special Issue, 1945: Introduction.
The young American poet Charles Henri Ford started View View as an avant-garde literary magazine with Surrealist interests. View magazine ran from September 1940 through March 1947, appearing quarterly and monthly as financial circumstances permitted. Ford initially intended View to be a journal of contemporary events compiled of writings by his literary friends in Europe. The magazine soon evolved beyond this news-oriented format to include color covers, additional advertisements, numerous illustrations, and more ambitious designs by Ford's assistant editor, Parker Tyler. View magazine offers the scholar of World War II-era American modernism a wealth of potential avenues for study. At its most successful, View was reminiscent of the French Surrealist magazine Minotaure . Ford modeled View after Minotaure 's lavish production and wide-ranging interests in "arts plastiques - poèsie - musique - architecture - ethnographie et mythologie spectacles - études et observations psychanalytiques." Historian Susan Nessen has compared the two periodicals and noted that, like
