Literary Arts Conference
Sponsored by The Milton Center
Newman University, Wichita, KS by David Wright Poet, human rights activist, and professor Carolyn Forché has been widely recognized for her ability to join her poetic sensibilities with her commitment to social and political change. Some of that recognition has come in the form of literary awards: The Yale Younger Poets Selection for Gathering the Tribes (1975); The Lannan Award for The Country Between Us (1981); and The Los Angeles Times Book Award for The Angel of History (1994). In 1994 she also edited and published Against Forgetting: Twentieth-Century Poetry of Witness , a selection of work from 145 poets from around the world who, as says Forché in the introduction, “endured conditions of extremity during the twentieth-century.” For her combination of writing, editorial work and ongoing activism, Forché also received the 1998 Edita and Ira Morris Hiroshima Foundation Award for promoting peace in a cultural field. Such recognition has not come without criticism. Forché’s critics have ranged from the Reagan administration to literary reviewers and critics who see her refusal to separate poetry and politics as damaging to the quality of both.

CAROLYN FORCHE (1950 )
As poet, translator and anthologist, Carolyn Forché has become the poet of her generation most strongly identified with political protest, social conscience, and, in her own phrase, “the poetry of witness.” As such, she can be seen in the tradition of poets like Robert Bly and W.H. Auden, who filled similar roles for their generations. Also like Bly and Auden before her, Forché has always maintained her reputation as a poet, not a purveyor of agitprop. Though reviews of her books appear in political magazines almost as often as literary magazines, even in those reviews her aesthetics receive as much attention as her beliefs. Carolyn Forché was born 28 April 1950 in Detroit, MI, but grew up in rural Michigan. Her father was a tool and die maker and her mother a journalist, but perhaps her most significant family influence was her paternal grandmother, whom she recalls disappearing at odd times, then returning weeks later with stories of staying in Mennonite or Native American or other communities. She has theorized that she inherited her own wanderlust from her grandmother, as she lived a peripatetic life from her late teens to her late thirties. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1972, and took an MFA from Bowling Green University in 1975. Over the next ten years she taught at ten different colleges or institutions, but more significant to her development as a poet were her time as a journalist and human rights activist in El Salvador from 1978-80, and as a correspondent for National Public Radio in Beirut during 1983. Since 1994 she has taught at George Mason University.

Together Into the Blue But Unbroken Perishing This doesn't happen often, but there is a jacket-blurb so perfect, I have to quote it: "Somewhere between screenplay and screen there is a zone of thought that Blue Hour conjures up. A trail of luminous images and scenes, personal flashbacks, the politics and literature of the 20th century float toward the inevitable ghost-past-ghost-future. In transit, in half-turnings and rushes of syntax, the true state is a film state in this fascinating book" (Fanny Howe). These "rushes of syntax" are the run-on fusion of subject and predicate, reminiscent-though more fragile, more tremble than surge-of Allen Ginsberg's catalogic pile-up lyricism in Howl . But whereas Ginsberg thrills with "the impulse of winter midnight streetlight smalltown rain", the less confessional nature of Forche's work elicits "Objects in the room grew small grew large again", "An iron bridge railing one moment its shadow the next", and "It lasted as long as a dream it was no dream." Grammar might seem an unusual thing to admire in poetry, but here, the run-on contradictions and transformations, fragmented near-closures ("Until the derelict house offered its last apparition", "And the cries were those of gulls following a seed plough"), and chants of wordlists ("
