Carolyn Forché’s Return
Carolyn Forch é: even the name makes the non-congenitally PC want to vomit. A few years ago I 1 st pointed out this abysmal writer’s lack of accomplishment
fame via achievement, now a writer is known simply because they represent a certain group, or identify with a certain ism. In short, the writers whose names are known today are not famous writers, merely celebrity writers- known for being known. CF is a titan in that breed. Let’s see if her ungodly ubiquitous c.v. can help discern how she became a celebrity: Carolyn Forché was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1950. She studied at Michigan State University and earned an MFA from Bowling Green State University. Her first poetry collection, Gathering The Tribes (Yale University Press, 1976) won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award. Her second book, The Country Between Us Flowers From The Volcano , was published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in 1983, and that same year, Writers and Readers Cooperative published El Salvador: Work of Thirty Photographers , for which she wrote the text. She has worked as a correspondent in Beirut, Lebanon and as a human rights liaison in South Africa. The Ecco Press published her translations of surrealist and French Resistance poet Robert Desnos in 1991. Carolyn Forché’s awards include a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, as well as three fellowships from The National Endowment for the Arts, and a Lannan Literary Award.

The influence of Walter Benjamin has latterly been more broadly evidenced as he begins to be recognized for his larger projects and his theoretical work beyond "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction." Alan Clinton considers, in the following and through a form of poetry of his own, Benjamin's influence on the poet Carolyn Forché, particularly in terms of her "poetry of witness," evidenced in the suggestively titled The Angel of History and the anthology Against Forgetting: Twentieth Century Poetry of Witness printable version Alan Clinton Gathering the Tribes (1976) and her account of visits to El Salvador in The Country Between Us (1981). Forché has been one of the leading poets who, in her own words, has combatted the "self-censorship operative among American poets and writers that seemed to preclude writing about...historical events when those events were still unsafe" (qtd. in Stein 147). Her third book of poems The Angel of History Text and Performance Quarterly The Angel of History one of the important poetic texts of the last decade.

The force that through the green fuse drives the flower Collected Poems , Dylan Thomas.)
The force that through the green fuse drives the flower
Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees
Is my destroyer.
And I am dumb to tell the crooked rose
My youth is bent by the same wintry fever.
The force that drives the water through the rocks
Drives my red blood; that dries the mouthing streams
Turns mine to wax. And I am dumb to mouth unto my veins How at the mountain spring the same mouth sucks. The hand that whirls the water in the pool Stirs the quicksand; that ropes the blowing wind Hauls my shroud sail. And I am dumb to tell the hanging man How of my clay is made the hangman's lime. The lips of time leach to the fountain head; Love drips and gathers, but the fallen blood Shall calm her sores. And I am dumb to tell a weather's wind How time has ticked a heaven round the stars. And I am dumb to tell the lover's tomb How at my sheet goes the same crooked worm.

Carolyn Forché: "On a Poetry of Witness"
Basic Historical Background: United States in El Salvador
What you have heard is true. I was in his house . His wife carried a tray of coffee and sugar. His daugher filed her nails , his son went out for the night. There were daily papers, pet dogs , a pistol on the cushion beside him. The moon swung bare on its black cord over the house. On the television was a cop show . It was in English. Broken bottles were embedded in the walls around the house to scoop the kneecaps from a man's legs or cut his hands to lace . On the windows there were gratings like those in liquor stores . We had dinner, rack of lamb , good wine, a gold bell was on the table for calling the maid . The maid brought green mangoes salt, a type of bread. I was asked how I enjoyed the country . There was a brief commercial in Spanish. His wife took everything away. There was some talk then of how difficult it had become to govern . The parrot said hello on the terrace . The colonel told it to shut up, and pushed himself from the table. My friend said to

The Plum Flowers Project
The idea for what has now become the Plum Flowers Poem Generator came into being during the Spring of 2002, while I was taking Carolyn Forche's poetry of witness English 464 class. It was during this time that I was first introduced to the Nanking Massacre and, after much research on the matter, was so thoroughly moved by the events as to write my original poem “Plum Flowers - I.” The poem consisted of five stanzas, each consisting of five lines that expand the previous line building to make various witness statements or questions. This was one of the best, and perhaps the most important poems I had ever written, but at the time it didn't seem like it. Immediately, I noted a major difference in the form of this poem, and it stood apart from the several hundred poems I had written over the years. The lines seemed to be easily interchangeable, reversible, mutually and equally associative. This was the presence of parataxis in the poem. Parataxis is defined by the New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry And Poetics as: “a stylistic term referring paucity of linking terms between juxtaposed clauses or sentences, often giving the effect of piling up, swiftness, and sometimes compression. A paratactic style is one in which a language's ordinary resources for joining propositions are deliberately underused; propositions are set one after another without expected particles, adverbs, or conjunctions” (Preminger 879-880). The form of this poem was obviously, conducive to poetic tinkering, and so I began at first, randomly rearranging the lines into different sequences, manually creating different iterations of the poem.

A Comparison of Visionary Poetry and Poetry of Witness
December 3, 2007
[I do not give permission for others to use this essay in any way, shape, or form without informing me. If you would like to use parts, or refer back to parts, ask me and I will consider.] One could say that visionary poetry and poetry of witness as described by Carolyn Forche are one and the same. Although there are many similarities, key differences remain that let us differentiate between the two classifications. It is, however, possible to be both a visionary and to write poetry of witness, as Allen Ginsberg shows us in his poem “Howl.” Both maintain similar characteristics and have relevance to each other. The variations between visionary poetry and poetry of witness are mostly centered around the methods that each type of poet uses in order to make their point known. Poets who utilize poetry of witness tend to be more direct and brutal while visionary poets are not always quite as personal and can also be more difficult to interpret. But the similarities are more common than the discrepancies, as both forms call for action on the reader’s part and neither form is meant to be read and forgotten. The poet means for his or her reader to be affected by a poem and act on those feelings that result in a positive manner. The duty of the visionary is to change his or her reader and make them wonder what’s in store for the future. The visionary incites change in the world. He or she presents current or past events and expounds on these, illustrating how events that have already occurred affect what will happen in the future. The visionary poet makes us aware of the future, and cries for action. Visionaries lay out the past in front of us to inspire us to change the future. Imagination is often a facet of visionary poetry. The topics and imagery are not always realistic but the message strikes close to home. In a way, the poet’s usage of imagination is cleverly crafted to convince the reader to invoke change. Realism is not always required, merely a relation to realism.
