Fo, Dario, Brecht and Antonio Gramsci as well as traditional commedia dell'arte (although less formal than the latter). Inspired by the circus and carnivals, his theater uses slapstick, puns, ridicule, and parody to explore social and political issues and to criticize authority of all kinds. A long-time member of the Communist party (he was denied entry into the United States in the early 1980s), Fo has often been critical of the policies of the Roman Catholic church, which has termed some of his plays blasphemous. Forceful, wittily anarchic, and often disturbing, his work was impeded by Italian censorship before 1962. In 1968, Fo and his wife, actress Franca Rame, with whom he has frequently collaborated in writing and acting, began presenting plays on contemporary issues. The most famous of these is

Should Rome's Sapienza University welcome the Pope?
In the name of secularism, several dozens of Teachers at the University of Sapienza in Rome have called for a protest against the visit of Pope Benedict XVI on January 17th. The Holy Father traditionally participates in the opening ceremony of the academic year. In an interview with Orazio La Rocca, the writer Dario Fo explains why he is not necessarily on the side of the teachers. "I am opposed to all forms of censorship because the right to speech is sacred. But this should be a reciprocal right. It doesn't seem to me that the Church and the Pope have been exemplary in matters of freedom of expression. This is why the invitation that the University of La Sapiencza addressed to Benedict XVI leaves me somewhat perplexed. It seems to me that before sending out invitations, a more attentive evaluation should have been made of this university, an institution universally recognised as a temple of secular culture and knowledge." » to the homepage (external link, La Repubblica)

  • INTRODUCTION
Nobel Prize-winning playwright, director, and actor Dario Fo is one of the most controversial figures in Italian theater. Through his avant-garde comedic stage productions—the spirit of which has been likened to that of such diverse artists as German plawright Bertolt Brecht and American comedians Lenny Bruce and the Marx Brothers—Fo reacts against injustice, discredits symbols of authority, and espouses a progressive left-wing political theory. Although his works were banned and censored in both Europe and the United States for years, by the mid-1980s Fo gained prominence as one of the most widely produced contemporary Italian playwrights outside of his native country.
    BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Fo was born in San Giano, Lombardy, Italy, the son of Felice (a railroad stationmaster) and Pina Rota Fo. Young Fo began refining his animated method of storytelling as a child, listening to the tales told by the locals in San Giano. After leaving Milan's Academy of Fine Arts without earning a degree, Fo wrote and performed with several improvisational theatrical groups. He first earned acclaim as a playwright in 1953 with Il dito nell'occhio A Finger in the Eye ), a socially satiric production that presented Marxist ideas against a circus-like background. His 1954 attack on the Italian government in

Fo, Dario In addition to playwright, Dario Fo is also director, stage and costume designer, and on occasion he even composes the music for his plays.
France Rame, his leading actress, has assisted in and contributed to the writing of many of the plays they have produced in their 45 years of theatre together. She has also assumed the administrative and organizational responsibility for the Fo-Rame Company.
Franca Rame Franca Rame was born in Parabiago, a small town in the Province of Milan. That she happened to be born there was pure chance: her family was performing in the town at the time. Her father Domenico, her mother Emilia and her brother, along with aunts, uncles, cousins and other actors and actresses hired on contract, were all part of a travelling theatre troupe touring the towns and villages of Lombardy and Piedmont. The Rame family's ties to the theatre are very old. Since the late 17th century, they have been actors, and puppet masters, as the occasion required. With the arrival of the cinema they shifted from puppet theatre to real theatre, enriched with all the "special effects" of the puppet theatre. They travelled from town to town, and were well received wherever they went.

    DARIO FO
Dario Fo with Franca Rame The Italian dramatist, actor, and theatrical activist Dario Fo was first invited to perform by the A.R.T. in 1986, occasioning his first visit to the United States. For many years Fo's plays have been performed all over the world, perhaps more than any other contemporary dramatist, and his influence has been considerable. The A.R.T. produced his We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay! in 1999 and the American premiere of Archangels Don't Play Pinball in 1988. Other works in his extensive oeuvre include Mistero Buffo Johan Padan and the Discovery of the Americas Accidental Death of an Anarchist Trumpets and Raspberries , and most recently The Devil with Boobs , a satiric comedy set in the Renaissance. Fo's strength is in the creation of texts that simultaneously amuse, engage, and provide perspectives. As in commedia dell'arte , where he often draws inspiration, Fo's plays are open for creative additions and dislocations, encouraging improvisation and influencing the audience in remarkable ways. His works have employed topics taken from current news, such as the rise of the Italian workers' movement, revolt in Chile, and the Palestinian situation, and they often include a discussion between actors and audience. As a bridge between popular culture and radical intellectuals, Fo's collective theatre occupies a central place in contemporary Italian culture.

BIOGRAPHY Dario Fo, recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born Leggiuno Sangiano in San Giano, Italy. His father, Felice, was a railroad worker and part-time actor, and his mother, Pina Rota, came from a peasant family. As a young man he helped his father smuggle escaped Allied soldiers and Jewish scientists to Switzerland during World War II. Fo was educated at the Brera Art Academy and studied architecture at the Polytechnic. In 1953 he married actress Franca Rame. Together they founded several theatre companies, and she collaborated on many of his plays. As members of the Communist Party they were refused admittance into the United States twice. In 1973, Rame was kidnapped, tortured, and raped by a group of fascists to punish them for their political activism. Fo's genre is drama, and he is known for his satirical plays. He first gained the notice of critics with IL DITO NELL'OCCHIO. One of his most famous works is MORTE ACCIDENTALE DI UN ANARCHICO (ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST). Another of his works, GLIE ARCANGELI NON GIOCANO A FLIPPER (ARCHANGELS DON'T PLAY PINBALL), became the greatest box-office hit in Italian theatre. Fo has written over 70 plays, and his works have been translated into more than 30 languages. CHRONOLOGY 1926 He was born in San Giano, Italy. (March 26)

        • UK Tuesday, 28 August 2007 Who said a clown can't be mayor of a great city? Two years ago, when Dario Fo (the Nobel Prize-winning jester and satirist) launched a campaign to become mayor of Milan, one of his most vocal supporters was London's mayor, Ken Livingstone. "I hear now in the papers of Milan that they say this man is too utopian, he is an idealist, he is lovely, but it will never work," Livingstone said at one of Fo's rallies. "That isn't true. A journalist said to me, 'Do they talk about Milan in London?' I said, 'If you elect Dario Fo, the whole world will talk about Milan. You have a chance. Take it!'" Fo's campaign was serious, not a Screaming Lord Sutch-like piece of tomfoolery. Aged 79 at the time he became a candidate, he said he wanted to "dedicate my last years to my city, trying to make it smile once again".
